Inline rotating triangle flashers and 360 flashers are the two dominant attractors used by salmon anglers when trolling. Its well understood that these flashers have varying impacts on your trolling depth. However, to what extent had never been fully explained to me. In this video I explain how I tested the effects of flasher design on trolling depth at multiple troll speeds.

Man, I've been letting way too much line out trying to get to 30-40 ft in 100 ft of water. Thank you! Speed didn't affect depth as much as I thought.

Good data. I assumed that the 360 would bring up that if not more in the column, but my go to as well. Got a nice blackmouth in the Sound last week that was down at I think around 140’. Glad I had a downrigger!

I have done a lot of research on the fishing lines used in the great lakes fisheries... they seldom run braided line but when the do they run 40lbs... so I have spooled mine up to see if it runs deeper.. they have to put out hundreds of feet of line and line diameter is a bigger issue for them than us..,

I used both of those flasher when fishing in Puget Sound. I just did what everyone else was doing. I never thought about effects on depth, but I always used an electric downrigger. What I did fiddle around with was the length of line behind the 12 pound ball and the length of leader between the flasher and my plug. Some of these variables are fun to ponder sometimes.

Probably not going to do a downrigger series since I and most people just rely on sonar for that.

With a 4oz CB with 360 I always guessed to be about 3 to 1 and the triangle to be about 2 to 1. Thoughts???

Am I reading the chart correctly, it appears like you had more blowback, ie. shallower running, with the 360 at 1.5 than you had at 2mph out to 50’ of line out? Seems backwards.

No you are reading that incorrectly. At 1.5 mph it always runs deeper than 2.0 with the 360

You sure you don’t have your graphs in the wrong order. You’re showing 15 feet deep at 40 feet out on the first graph and 19 feet deep at 40 feet out on the second graph which is supposed to be the faster speed.

I’m sure. Let’s be honest a difference of 4’ isn’t going to matter to the fish but o”beyond 50’ on the line counter the slower 360 runs deeper the entire time you are literally the only instance it isn’t

Here in the southern Oregon rivers I frequent, we typically fish with 30 to 45 feet of line out most often, so this is real world to me, and it struck me as odd that it behaves in that way. Also the strange way it is hard decking at 20 feet deep until you get more than 60 feet of line out. That was unexpected also. No hate intended here, just clarification for our own particular situation down here. I wonder if 8, 12, and 16oz also behave in that way?

I’m curious too. Will also be running some trials in current. I’ve also seen chinook move up and down 10’ or 20’ in the water column to inspect gear so I don’t think it necessary to have it in their face either
