Kind of looses it’s authenticity when ALL of you “creators” keep saying the EXACT same thing! Just taking preventative measures to attempt to shut down the inevitable comments, and for good reason…. Being “inevitable” and all! Sure, against lightning it works! That comes in through the ground and/or into the wires…. But an EMP goes through everything! Electronic devices don’t need to be hooked up to power to fry! What does that tell you and how does it make sense this would work? I do not know AC too much I’ll admit but I understand electricity enough and how circuits work (however most all your electronics run off DC via power supplies, AC is just easier to transmit and rectify to useful DC) As far as vehicles, these modules make absolutely no sense what so ever, MAYBE if it had a grounding strap that came out and dragged along the ground under the car, but grounding it through the chassis will just make damned sure it fries the ECU! EMP attacks micro controllers and processors directly, doesn’t need to be powered and doesn’t need to make a circuit (even those “experts” say just that! This is going to blow and pop a breaker that it’s hooked up too, giving you a sense of security that it’s working HOWEVER all you’re doing is hooking it up before the breaker so of course it will blow in a lightning strike! Our homes are already protected from lightning strikes! (That big twisted bare wire in your mains box that goes out and into the ground!) If they were confident they worked, they wouldn’t have potted it to hide the guts, they also would have implemented a resettable fail safe in the event of an electrical spike or EMP! Please by all means, respond….. people have dissected these and they are nothing more than the automotive gimmick “antizap” sold for welding on new vehicles… Google “EEVblog automotive surge protector” and look at what’s inside, after that Google “EMP shield what’s inside” first IF you do so respond. Not that it matters, if an EMP hits you, the EMP is not what you need to worry about! Lastly your test setup lacks 1 very important component, it has A LOT of voltage but there is basically nil amperage! One big reason an EMP is effective is because the current overload and not just the voltage surge! (There’s never talk about ampere and all voltage…. Why?) Look forward to a response!

​@@darylwalker256 Most emp damage is done through your wires in your wall and ultimately through your outlets. The emp shoots a power surge through your wires and fries everything that's plugged in. (Look up emp damage on electronics that are not plugged in. You'll see that they often survive.) This box stops the emp before it runs through the wires in your house. Effectively stopping it all together. It does the same thing if you attach one to your vehicle.

Not the same, but the tig machines that I work with have a high frequency option that allows you to start your ark without needing to touch your tungsten to the material but using basically an on/off button. So like your wires did, it will bridge a gap....only a gap of about an inch. And like your wires, it does make quite a bit of audible sound, and you can see the arc bridging between your tungsten and the base metal. If you do it instead to your finger, it won't really bite you, it just tickles..... Unless you elbows are wet from sweating, and you are leaning on the table....then it feels like someone punched you in the arm pretty hard, and you wind up violently throwing your tig rig. Lol Were you in danger of your heart stoping when that thing bit you? They say 120 is the most dangerous for that.

I now want to just increase the voltage and amperage on this! I want to build a 1.2 million volt and hit it. This cost about $300 in parts, and I lost several relays, power supplies, and my Ideal clamp meter (1000v). I lost the meter when I used the high volt test lead to attempt to catch the voltage spike. It was worth it to me, just to see if this thing really does what it says.

First off, Steve welcome to testing and I'm quite pleased it wasn't resulting in a room temperature safety challenge. I'm an EMC Engineer and I started as an EMC Technician at HP.. I am grateful you have so much acumen as Master Electrician. Just to let you know, the testing by Keystone is not in house but totally independent accredited by an outside accreditation agency with equipment whose calibration is both current and traceable to NIST. Steve's data is interesting but unsupported. Dr. Arthur Brown also has solutions for EMP mitigation.

Absolutely, this test is anecdotal. This is also my view when I see a company boast that they had their equipment tested at an independent laboratory! It sounds nice, but I can say grand statements as well. This is more to put my mind at ease- especially with rated specs of 100kv protection levels. That isn't a whole lot in the ESD/ EMP realm and if that is the maximum they laboratory tested, what happens above those levels? Now of course, scaling this up to even 800kv presented quite a few additional challenges and subsequent failures.

It was a lot of fun- coming from a guy hiking ridgelines to wind down. I made sure I was using the one hand rule and discharging the system multiple times before touching. I would let it sit for a minute (off camera) then discharge again. The ESD coupling onto conductive surfaces was not expected and still got me! The ozone in the air should have been my reminder...

My destruction test, sadly I lost the footage, but it wasn't super compelling visually. Other than the smell, there wasn't much to see. The 24v transformer I used for the hvac power supply took the brunt of the destruction and the gfci. The LED lights simply stopped working. The power supply had to be taken outside, where it remains.

I think I am now most skeptical of the solar protector- only because the large range of solar output capabilities. I have not looked yet to verify if you purchase those specifically for the charge controller voltage to be properly matched. This would be the variable that brings me greatest concern, because you can have solar arrays voltage in excess of 600 volts (depending on inverter used), and as low as 12 volts.

I am assuming you researched majority of your answers already, but essentially a series of high voltage capacitors that discharge all at once from an dielectric breakdown on an air gap, causing the cascade effect. As to the emp shield, it shunts the excess voltage to ground. The internal operation of the unit was my question as well, and only assumed they utilized MOV (metal oxide varistors) to complete this function, but sadly the box is epoxy filled. I could destroy for science!

The inductancy is what get to your house and affect the electronic equipment in your house. You don't have to be connected in the way that that happened. Also, you can use a small mirror if you work with resistance hycapacity resistance in your line and you can use Alex capacity for theater.

The "DOE EMP Resilience Action Plan January 2017" in its introduction has a good description and graph of the E1, E2 and E3 events. Additionally "19_0307_CISA_EMP-Protection-Resilience-Guidelines" has info on what you can do on four levels from basic to advanced.

A home made spiral line generator would output far more juice than that marx bank will. You can make one from a couple rolls of bakers aluminum foil, lascsping plastic a 5 gallon bucket of transformer oil, some pipe for the spark gap and some battery operated source for charging up the spiral line cspacitor assembly. On its own it peaks in 60nS, but with an antenna and reflector the pulse can be cut to only 4ns. The output can be well into the MV range. Most importantly it will accurately simulate the E1 wave.

I was initially working with a DC collapsing field transformer coil to produce the high voltage, but it wasn't giving the desired results I wanted. I also kept burning up my relays as I increased the amperage and voltage with their rapid open and close to collapse the field. Without a high induction on a coil, I struggle to get the output voltage high enough and keep the insulation properties intact for the conductors, so I settled on the marx generator. I do want to increase this output to over 1.2 million volts and fire up the test bed again, but I have to get more test equipment (mostly the hvac controller) after I destroyed all the equipment.

I am confident this will protect against any CME. An EMP blast close enough and with a blast wave parallel to conductors will induce a high amperage load. The voltage will build to exceed the dielectric breakdown of the air gap and discharge. There will be a maximum voltage experienced on any grid lines before that discharge. This is one reason I want to bump this up to 1.2 million volts and test again!

Steve was referring to an old method of grounding buildings by using the metal conduit that the wires we run in, as opposed to an 8' or 10' ground rod.

As Chris mentioned, the household unit shunts to ground, so you must have a good ground connection for your panel, proper ground rods and at some point in your system, a bonded neutral- which is a code requirement at any separately derived system. The vehicle version had me skeptical as well initially, but the battery (lead acid) is the device that absorbs the voltage spike. It is fully capable of handling this. The one caveat to this is if you also use high saturation ferrite cores to clamp voltage spikes, then the negative must be connected either directly to the battery or before any ferrite core on the negative. I would check with EMP shield for the proper connection because I only assume that it shunts to negative for the automotive version, as being the most likely. Either way, if one were to put a ferrite on the shunted path, it would impede the ability to shunt the voltage. Hopefully this clears up your questions, but I may be able to explain more or differently if you still have questions.

Anything that provides a minimum of 120db of suppression with no gaps in continuity will protect anything in it. Obviously you couldn't run your generator in a Faraday container, but you could store it in one.

Chris beat me to it. No holes greater than .29 mm, solid continuous highly conductive materials are required for the best Faraday cage foe EMP protection. CME, a mesh is acceptable. If you were to build a snail shell room of conductive material, then an opening is possible for ventilation. My understanding is that a switchback corridor or multiple 90° corners will also block the EM effects- similar to radiation protection for underground shelter corridors. Hopefully I described this well enough to understand.

I've had an EMP Shield on my truck for a couple years and I call it my $390 insurance policy for my $30k truck. It's the best investment I've ever made. I'm still working on saving up for another unit for my solar generators, but the problem I've come across is that EMPS doesn't make units for the various solar generators like they did the Inergy. I was told to get the plug-in model for my RV and keep the generators plugged into that. That option has recently gone out the window because I'm about to move to a more "primitive" location and I'm not taking the RV. Do your experts have any ideas?

I remember seeing their emp alert box and was highly critical of it because it is a passive device only. It's great if it happens to be in a location that it's audible and you immediately run to your electrical panel to open the main breaker. The car protection they sell, the high saturation ferrite cores are a great idea to limit surge currents, so if installed correctly, they are a great addition. I would assume their device also uses MOV's, so it may work similarly. Just be sure to attach the return lead (shunt lead) to the battery instead of after the ferrite core. Otherwise the ferrite will limit the shunt current as well!

I believe Chris held one up towards the end of the video. It appears to be a cord plug, 120v device. Keep in mind, I showed this shunts the voltage to ground, so a good ground is needed. It would also only provide protection to 1/2 of your household split phase, and I would mount it as close to the panel or service as possible.

I bought a youczon faraday bag from Amazon. When that alarm went out to everyone’s phone, I thought “great! I’ll be able to test this faraday bag”. I folded down like I was supposed to. 100% correct! Not all Faraday bags are created equal. If you can see through it, it will be a low level protection. The thicker material, highly conductive, with no holes, will give you anywhere from 40-80db of attenuation. Antistatic bags offer minimal protection. These are often the Amazon specials. I can attest that my Faraday room will drop my cellular and wifi signals completely, but that is in the 2.4Ghz ranges.

Its just a double-throw 20A breaker switch and 4 wires, 2 for "hot" on L1 and L2, and a ground, and a neutral(ground back to powerco). I was fairly new to this stuff and got mine installed just fine, its really not too difficult in most cases.

One question about the test was he didn’t use a 20 amp fuse that is supposed to be the feed to the EMP shield. For a whole house shield it is fed through a double pole breaker but for this experiment he could have tried to use a single pole 20 amp breaker. I believe that breaker is only to protect the EMP shield but it did show it could take high voltage hits. I did share the video.

I will definitely add this to the mix on the next testing session. We are not close to a 20 amp load for the breaker to trip, and most breakers are similar to snap switches in function with no susceptible electronics (leviton, gfci, arc fault excluded.) I am saving up $ for a higher voltage testing coil with high frequency vs 1 second pulses. I attempted to scale up the existing with tons of failures, back feeding that bit me and fried electronics. I did get a couple 800kv bangs before the power supplies got fried!

Now I am thinking of adding some type of translator between the four legs, line and load. Maybe heavy duty rubber 1/4” mat.

@donalberda1344 in the full length video I had done both a static and dynamic test (dynamic being less exciting). CME will be highly damaging to transformers and motor loads in operation at the time. Yes, sensitive electronics could also be susceptible, but basic Faraday principles will provide adequate protection. If you absolutely know what you are doing (deadly mistake easily made) you could pull the meter base and ground the secondary side. This would *¹shunt any static discharge jump straight to ground. Opening the main would add to this protection as the only path to ground. The EMP shield *¹ does this automatically, but a low impedance ground is necessary for proper protection (closest to the source is recommended). I highly questioned its ability to offer protection anywhere in the circuit, but thinking through the fundamentals of electricity "flow" as not really a flow, but movement of electrons back and forth from atoms, it made sense that it worked as a protection device. Similarly when I became the path to ground on my scaled up 800kv generator. Even using an isolated relay with separate power source on the coil, a plastic switch, closed with insulated grip tool, while standing on a tire and getting hit with back fed collapsing coil voltage. When I utilized an insulated fiberglass rod from 6' away, I no longer was the path to ground, but it blew up the isolation relay, then all the power supply transistors. I was the shunt to ground previously and removing that destroyed all the electronics. This could be an hour long conversation causing unintended involuntary sleep! I am filming a video tomorrow hopefully, if I can get a congruent storyline, showing that a milkjug thickness of hdpe plastic will insulate at least 20kv. This could also be unrealistically used as an insulator, but the above story shows just how tenacious electricity is in finding a path to ground. If that ground is provided in the meter can ( as it should) then it would likely jump from the lug to the can first, before making the leap to the secondary lugs.

Are you guys familiar with tasers? I had one that was over 900,000 volts but very little amperage. I know that high voltage, ac or DC, can do you or your electric goods some damage. But, I think you have to have some current ( amps) before it will do any damage. Amps is the current through which the voltage is the force that pushes the current. So there has to be both present in order for any damage to occur, correct? So extremely high voltage with no current is the same as high current with no voltage. Neither will harm you.

Small to moderate EMP or CME, the distribution network would survive and be back up. If a major EMP or Carrington event occurs, the grid goes down long-term, so individual home protection isnt likely to restore your home power. I protect my computers, fridge, and important home electronics, but if a big voltage spike occurs, the grid goes down to my area, so big spike protection is moot.

Static electricity is a DC current correct? Via, an emp or CME or lightning. I know they operate differently, especially lightning. With lightning, it's a static charge that is trying to balance the electrons between the atmosphere and the earth. And the actual damage occurs when the electrons leave the earth and travel up to the atmosphere. I could be wrong about lightning but just what I have learned. But I know that an emp or CME have several waves. E1, E2, and E3.. which of those are the most damaging? The emps and cmes, are they trying do do the same thing, are they trying to find the shortest path to ground?

I am assuming they are utilizing MOV metal oxide varistors, but have not confirmed that or VDR- voltage dependant resistors. Some areas have included VDR's on main transmission lines to help with CME and EMP effects- both natural and unnatural.

Without question, these were tested in the unenergized state- as I didn't trust emp shield claims, plus this is beyond their specifications. What you don't see is that I drove a separate ground rod and tied it to a chain link fence for a lower impedance ground- bypassing and isolating my entire household from the tested voltage. The 120v is a nominal voltage that has little reference whether applied or not when pushing 400,000 volts. The side effects of doing this test indoors was the induced voltage that coupled onto the internal house wiring, and did have adverse effects, including taking out my UPS running my freezers. I thought that it might be salvageable, but today, continues to go into fault mode often. That being said, I could now use that UPS as the isolated power source, driving the 120v to remove any potential concerns! It would be my luck that it would go into fault right as I zap it... The alternate intent to removing a power source, is the potential of alternate paths to help reduce the overall voltage spike. It'll it is on a stand alone and isolated circuit, it only has one pathway to travel, and that is through the EMP shield alone. I hope this explanation helps.

@@ahuggins6 yes I do. I do have a whhouse surge suppressor (leviton brand) but something got by it. The ups has new batteries installed roughly 6 months previously. In operation for the last 2.5 years. No load changes and under rated watt hour specs. It used to run both freezers with compressors running for an "estimated run time" of 45 minutes- not that the compressors run continously. Battery backup systems are known to fail on the converter circuit, but this would be a random failure during AC power mode- which happens less frequently. Random induced voltage to the house wiring is a lesser test than a direct strike to an isolated setup- in my opinion.
