I've been on the look out of for a decent example of this iconic expedition tent for years and now I finally got one. But will it live up to the hype? Here's my first impressions of the Mountain Hardwear EV2 designed by American mountaineer Ed Viesturs ( hence the EV name).

Wow Andrew! A piece of history. You have been very lucky finding one in such good nick. Looking forward to seeing you out in it in snow. The way this Winter is shaping up, you shouldn't have to wait long - though the way temperatures are yo-yoing this year it might not stay around for long. 😊

That’s a gorgeous looking tent. Love the bight orange color. A proper mountaineering tent with intelligent solutions. Ed Viesturs is a solid guy, and he did all the 8000 meter peaks without oxygen, and he did it Alpine style. I guess the tent is a bit heavy comparing to today’s standards, but still. A proper piece of mountaineering history. Awesome. ATB from Norway 🇳🇴

Named after Ed Vesturs. Good tent but single skin in the Uk will be problematic for condensation etc. But super lightweight and cool. Essentially a portaledge for the ground

yes I spent many trips in the EV2 when it was new 20 yrs ago. The tent is really cool but leaks badly in wet weather and the fabric really has no breathability compared to similar tents of same era like Bibler and Todd Tex fabric. However, is one of the coolest looking and designed tents. Love the ability to pitch without internal poles like the Biblers. Length is briliant for tall climbers. Enjoy in cold dry weather!!

Camping cat nip. Hahaha. I totally get why you got this. I would pitch it in the garden occasionally. Just to admire it. I loved the Trango 3 I had for the same reasons. Though I did stoorm camp in it. Gauntlet thrown down!

I presume they were made waterproof. Looks really good. You get condensation in all tents.

Wow !!!!!! It does look like it was pitched once, then put away and forget about... I like the amount and positioning of the vents!.. Take care out there.

Yes that's what the seller said but I have to say I'm usually cynical with that type of comment ( but looks like the truth ) !

I should do a film of my 25 year old TNF westwind I still use once in a while. Used it on my Longest day film at Lamb foot dub and it was still great! 😂......That tent looks great. Some similar construction and bits to my Kuiu . That will look awesome in the snow for sure.

To fix the seam tape, turn the tent inside out, cover the tape with grease proof paper and iron it back on with your iron set to medium heat (video on my channel of a tutorial) it actually works, I saved my old Vango Chinook using this method (and it's far stronger than any hilleberg soulo 😜

Always fancied one of them. The single skin put me off though, looking forward to seeing how you get on with that, hope we get a good winter to test it in. ATVB Robert

I'm pretty sure this is a new tent, unused. I bought a brand new, never used, Eureka K2 XT expedition tent earlier this year and had the same experience. Unblemished manuals, guy lines still in original bundle, but the telling thing on yours is the elastics around the poles. Mine came the same way and I can't imagine anyone bothering with that for a used tent.

Why would it not be waterproof?

I think the fabric is breathable but possibly not great on the HH and has a ton of seams everywhere which although taped I've seen some vids where it appears to leak , I think where the floor meets the sides might be an issue.

I bought an early to this country Mountain Hardwear tent. It had many nice features and being in it was better than being in a Quasar - until the ground turned wet. Then I discovered that the undamaged floor leaked badly. Water wicked straight through. I think MH modified their floor fabric after getting feedback from Britain but I wouldn’t buy one second hand.

It looks like it's never been used. Not being waterproof may be the reason. Nice tent though.
