Wow, I'm barely 10 minutes in and this is already so informative! I have recently retired a mini ITX gaming rig and I have a B660I, 12100, 16GB DDR4, 750W SFX PSU, a nice ITX case and almost 30TB of HDDs lying around so I might as well put them to good use! Unraid seems like just what I need 🤔

@@PCTechHustle I did a trial build in my ITX case and while it would work, I decided to just get a Jonsbo N1 as my solution will make it VERY hard to access drives once they are in and the space is poorly optimized too. In the long run the N1 makes far more sense and has 5xHDDs+1xSSD which should be enough for me. As my broad only has 4xSATA ports I'll need to expand to 6xSATA ports. There are M.2 SYBA SI-ADA40149 and SI-ADA40141 to get up to 2 or 5 extra SATA ports. Will these solution be okay for unRAID too and not cause an issue with the other SATA ports? I mainly want to use it for plex or jellyfin and just have a lot of data storage...considering surveillance but too early to say.

You're misunderstand the parity drive ( misconception ) , but good video . Even if the parity drive fails ( the Seagate ) , the system will be able to rebuild . The data is not stored on that particular drive , but on every drive . What you did is just giving your self the chance to upgrade disks up to 8TB without having re-install the entire system . Even the Seagate will store normal data , as any other drive , not only the data required to rebuild the parity in case of failure . All drives are required to rebuild the drive . The drives you're giving up , is basically the amount of space you're giving up so the mathematical algorithm could start the rebuild . There's more information on unraid wiki .

@@PCTechHustle Well , I have to correct something a bit . The parity drive does store most of the data to rebuild ( and probably doesn't store other files then the rebuild ) . But still , all drives are required on the rebuild functions .

Cache drives are ok, but having as much RAM as possible is way more efficient and faster than an SSD, or even an NVMe. In a domestic setting you probably are only dealing with a small amount of data at any one time. RAM is still the best to "pre-fetch" your read and write.

One of the best intro Unraid videos I have seen! The only thing that drives me crazy about this build is having your power supply blowing into your case. That is one of hottest parts of a computer build and you'd be much better turning it around. The 2 fans you have blowing in from the side are plenty to create your positive air flow.
@PCTechHustle
@PCTechHustle 3 жыл бұрын
Actually towards the end (21:08) I explain this. The PSU is not blowing into the case it’s actually in-taking air from inside the case and Exhaust out the rear. I left the intake fan facing the inside to try to introduce additional positive air movement across the motherboard, instead of isolating the PSU into its own intake/exhaust ecosystem if it were mounted face down. Thanks for watching though!

The only downside of that chassis is it doesn't have any airflow directed at the PCIe slots. I'd consider strapping a fan onto that HBA.

Hi there! Glad you found the video helpful! The two network ports on the back of the motherboard are 2x 1gbps ports. Can be used for redundancy / teaming. I am just just using 1 for now though. Correct, the motherboard is a bit older so do not support usb3.0 however you can buy an expansion card like this to plug into of of the 3x pci-e slots on the board. amzn.to/3covgSA. I also used the same card to give an older dell optiplex case swap front and rear USB3.0, works well!! @@PCTechHustle thanks, no problem on the delay. I've looked it up in the meantime. So apparently the card can be in a legacy firmware which just presents the drives to the operating system (which is what we want). That's IT mode. And apparently if the firmware is IR mode, the host system will see the HBA as an extra layer on top of the hard drives and it can get in the way of setting things up in unRAID. This is my rough understanding. Thanks for the response either way, cheers!

Have you had any problems with your disks getting hot in that case? I've seen some complaints that the disk chassis itself blocks most of the intake air so the disks themselves don't get much airflow. Some people have had to make mods to keep the disks from getting hot.

Could you please help me understand this though - you only had 1x cable out from the LSI card - you had a 1x4 splitter from SAS to SATA, so shouldn’t you have used both ports on the card for 8 hdds? Did you use 4 from your motherboard? Also, from what I understand, SAS is 12gbps, and sata is 6gbps, so wouldn’t anything more than plaiting a SAS into 2x SATAs throttle your r/w speeds? Wouldn’t what you’ve done effectively make them 3gbps sata?

Cach Tier Hot Tier Cold Tier 1. is this possible? 2. Is this a supported / recommended solution 3. Is this a terrible idea because I clearly don't understand NAS because if I did then I would know to NEVER ask this and I should crawl away into a corner and cry 🤣 Thanks!

If you're going to use ZFS or BTRFS (or any decent NAS filesystem for that matter) you should have 32Gb of RAM and if using ZFS specifically also having a few SSDs (3+) as read and write caching storage areas which themselves should be in a raid 1 volume/pool to ensure the systems remains up and running regardless. For the HDD section you should have ""RAID 6"" volumes (I know, using this name just to specify at least 2 redundant live disks per volume) and on top of it having at least another 2 "off-line" spares to come up when a live disk dies and automatically replace it. If you can do that as well for the SSD caches even better. This is the real reason to have hot-swappable caddies, with a setup like the one I've just covered you won't ever need to power it off to swap a dead storage device.

Cheaping out on your main storage is a BAD idea, really bad. Don't forget, RAID is not a backup. It can help you prevent data loss but not without significant investment if you want that to be reliable and trustworthy which requires the setup I've just covered, otherwise the likelihood you'll end up in a scenario you will need your backup to be a recent one is quite likely. Don't forget, the more complex a system the more likely something will fail, the only situation where you can come out ahead in complex systems is when the added complexity is there to add resilience etc (yeah, the added cost in storage devices and hot swappable drive bays). Also, having a redundant power supply solution is a very good idea, making sure not to cheap out on the PSU is also crucial, you don't want one of those cheap ones that when they die they take the motherboard and disks with them with a power surge.

Thanks for the Video! Can you share what drive temperatures you get with that case when Unraid is doing a parity check? I am interested in that case, I am currently having the "Inter-Tech IPC Storage 88887191 Case 4U 4408" case and the airflow is just bad. My drives are constantly overheating and reaching 50 degrees celsius. I don't own a server rack, so that case is just sitting on top of a table. The initial goal was to find a good/cheap server rack, but there are not many options in Europe that would fit my budget. So now I am thinking of ditching my current case, but find an alternative that still offers hot-swap bays.
@PCTechHustle
@PCTechHustle 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I don’t absolutely recall the temps under a parity check. I run that once a month but I want to say the temps are around 30-40c during use. The warmest drive is actually my cache drive and when under load can hit around 50c. I also have my system to spin down the drives when not under use to save power consumption and reduce temps. However 50c isn’t exactly overheating temps but I do agree with you I would prefer to see lower operating temps as well. The chassis I am using seems to do the trick. As you can see I have it fully populated. Hope that helps! Cheers!

@@PCTechHustle Thanks for the quick answer! I am using 8 HDD and 1 cache SSD too, so 30-40c would be great! Where did you put the SSD, I think I did not see it in the video. Is it in the back of the case? Would make sense that it gets hot there without having enough airflow.
@PCTechHustle
@PCTechHustle 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I just shoved it in the rear of the case. No it really doesn’t get any airflow but still seems to keep reasonable temps. My theory behind it being that I it’s a cheap drive so if it fails I’ll replace it. I have my mover scheduled to run once per day so there is low likelihood of it failing while also containing data. You can always raid 1 your change drives if you are concerned with that, which I guess for a better use case example I could have done that here. I nah still go back and do that

Hey, I was actually looking up the case you are using, and found this video as a result. Good video, I especially liked the sections of the components picked, so I could easily go to the case-part of the video. Incidentally, I also want to use this case for my unraid server (which is currently inside my old main PC case), mainly because of the hot-swappable aspect and the relatively OK price (especially compared to the IMO heavily overpriced CS381). My main concern is about the temperature, many people said the drives are not cooled properly. I've read that flexing away a little thing at the bottom and putting a 120mm fan there pretty much fixes the issue, so I was wondering what your experiences are with the temps on this case. I would appreciate a reply :)
@PCTechHustle
@PCTechHustle 3 жыл бұрын
Hey cool! Glad you found my video! Actually I have no drive temperature issues. Most of the time the drives are actually spun down when not in operation, so they are very cool most all the time. Even under load they do not exceed ~50c. My system in general is also very low power draw, under 150w from the wall. So it runs very cool all the time, usually under 40c when I am not utilizing and that was my aim. Granted my server purpose was just for storage. So I am not running a GPU for encoding for plex or anything like that. Hope that helps. By the way the fans that operate as intake blow directly on the drives, I would imagine even under full load or a parity sync its the coolest area of the enclosure still.
