Can you remove a tree stump with a compact tractor and no backhoe? Watch and see. The short answer is, "yes". The long answer is, "It's a lot of work and takes a long time!" The Kubota B2601 performs well, but this project really pushes its limits. This is really a job for a backhoe or a larger tractor, but if you take your time, you can do it.

I know the feeling of taking on a job with the tools I have, even if they are not the right tool for the job. My project was to dig under my cabin to put in a foundation and all new floor joists. My B2100 with the LA301 loader took me 2 years to dig out an area about 30x30x6 feet deep. I didn't realize when I first started how much dirt and rocks I would be removing. I had to remove the roll bar so I could fit under the cabin. Finally got it done this fall. Blew a couple hoses, had 2 cylinders repacked. she just turned over 3000 hours, brought her home to give her some attention, fix some leaks, and a little TLC. Still running strong.

Renting a 3pt stump grinder would would save some time and a lot of wear and tear on the tractor if you have a local rental shop. You really made a lot of progress with that bucket though and looks like you got to have some fun in the process! Good stuff, I love how much you can do with a tractor.

Ih you plan on removing stump with anything cut them at waist height. Whether pulling with a tractor,truck or backhoe makes it so much simpler. If not using a backhoe use a bucket or garden hose to soak area or wait until a good rain will also make it easier.

Use your box scrapper and rippers. That will loosen the soil and many roots then remove remaining soil with your bucket.

You don’t need a backhoe to get unstuck the FEL works the same way

Suggestion - take a 55 gallon barrel or something similar. Cut out both ends and stand over the stump with some bricks or rock under the lower edge. You’re building a stack or chimney with a space for air to enter at bottom. Build a fire inside with the intent to build up six inches or so off hot coals which you maintain over the course of the day. Screen door or rabbit wire over the top keeps sparks down. Let it cook over a few days. It will eventually consume the stump and follow the major roots for several feet. You can shut down the process with a garden hose at any time. A bucket of dirt fills in the hole. I successfully removed stumps even near structures because the stack sends the heat straight up and controls any spread. Wet down the surrounding ground or objects you want to protect. Leave a sprinkler running?

Interesting technique, to shave the roots. I use a reciprocating saw with demolition blades, to cut roots. It helps speed the process.

Great idea on "shaving" the root. I've got 4 white pine stumps I left and said the same thing. "They'll rot and soften up in a couple years" 🚫 I left them 4 foot high though so I'll have a little leverage. Thanks for the video.

I've done similar things with my tractor. I put the rippers down on my box blade and ripped it up first. Every now and then a ripper would get under a root and bring me to a screeching halt. I like a challenge. Awesome video.

Been there done that. I saw another KZbin video where the guy used a reciprocating saw and cut all the roots first. I tried that and it really helped. My stumps were old and I thought they would just pop out but no, they put up a fight. I have a couple of more stumps to remove and I am going to do the same thing. This time, I am going to drill deep holes in the stump in hopes that while I am digging, that the stump would split. Thanks for the video. It was a lot of work but you did a fine job. 😣😣😣😮😮😮😁😁😀😀

I’ll admit I’m impressed that you got it out that way. That looked like hard work. But if you keep pulling stumps out that way you’ll be heading back to your dealer for another bent loader frame. I use my sawzall and just buy long blades and bury them in the ground and cut the roots. Blades are cheap compared to fixing your tractor.

I have the same size tractor and this is how I dig out stumps. As others have said the tooth bar makes all the difference in the world and helps cut roots. It does leave a HUGE hole!

Use ONE box blade ripper. Then drive by the stump, moving closer each pass. Cut the roots a few times. Then hook the stump with the middle (2 if you don't have a centered ripper) and pull while lifting. Your 3 point is stronger than your loader! It will take out some pretty good size stumps... but it won't get as many as a backhoe and an excavator can get even more.

I’ve pulled out several large stumps in my B2320 using the loader and auger. Drill down all around the stump, which will split roots then rip it out. Got 3 large cedar stumps last summer and put about 5 hours on the machine.

We are getting a tractor soon with a front mounted hydraulic auger driver. We will try to dig out around fence posts & trees stumps with a thin auger to do the heavy and deep digging. It should be fairly easy on the tractor.

There are times I wish I had bought a backhoe for my tractor. I might have used the box blade with the tines all the way down at least a few swipes. I hand dug around a live oak tree stump and cleaned in between the roots. Then with a bow saw cut off the roots, hooked a heavy chain around , drug it out.

Hi you have a box blade drop the teeth down drag a few times. It will bust up the clay and rip the roots out. Then use the bucket along with dragging the box spreader . Definitely not the best tool for the job, but you proved it will eventually get the job done. I used my FEL to dig a hole a bit over 4 feet deep to bury my dog a couple weeks ago. A tooth bar is a force multiplier. It makes it much easier to push through and break up compacted soil and roots.

I have a BX2380. No back hoe. I was having problems getting stumps out. All different sizes. Saw Biff's Equipment KZbin channel. He had a Artillian Pallet fork frame with a front hoe attachment. Cost a few bucks but did the job very very quickly. The cost was worth the time saved. To make the investment worth it I got some pallet forks the the Artillian Pallet fork frame. Incidentally the Antillean set up has sectional grapples too. I have a land pride grapple that came with my BX2380. Good video.

Interesting means of removing a stump. Since you have a lot of clay, roots tend to be closer to the surface. It's hard to cut roots with a straight bucket blade like your bucket has. Look up the Heavy-Hitch bucket tooth bar that would make the job faster and easier. They make one that will fit a Kubota. I've used my son's Kubota excavator to pull stumps. Even with that it is still not the easiest job...and we have great soil to work with.

Look into a stump bucket. It's still a slow job but much less stress on the FEL. The one I used tapered down to a point with 3 teeth. I cut around all four sides to cut the roots then rolled the stumps out. It's amazing how big a hole it takes to remove a 12: stump.

Your Box blades are powerful root cutters - drag the box over the roots and they will rip and tear. Lower them a little more and rip and tear more.

Just bought the same tractor and similarly decided against purchasing the backhoe since it was gonna cost me close to 40k 🤦‍♂️. While I do have plenty of stumps to remove, small and large, I do remember the Kubota dealer specifically mentioning that these smaller tractors can easily get damaged when removing larger stumps. It takes a toll on the hydraulics…but I see a lot of people doing it and pushing they’re compacts to the limit.

The stump bucket works well for small stumps and shrubs. But I wouldn’t recommend it for sumps larger that 4 inches unless they are well rotted.

I have done this before myself and I have regretted it. You always end up putting way too much wear and tear on your tractor. Your loader is just not designed for this. I would strongly discourage folks from doing this and just go rent a mini backhoe for the day. They run about $360/day with the trailer (in my area). You can pop out a lot of stumps in a full day with a mini backhoe. Plus dig ditches for water and power and all kinds of other fun. Thanks for the video!

I bent my rear arms with the box blade ...i then spent a few hours talking to the mechanic of do and donts and this was one thing he said would cause too much Stress on the tractor he said he sees it all to often ... he said people think it can do everything but the stress on the tractor isn't worth it.

This was a good Demonstration of what a skillful operator can do with a Little tractor. I don't think it would be a practical solution for the less skilfull like me though. I bought a 3 Point Grinder for my bs and the thing is great. Only taken about half a dozen stumps and some thought and research and I can do what I call " Precision grinding now where I only make a hole less than about 12" larger than the stump I'm removing. It's qute neat I have the hang of it and a stump that size would have be gone in 10 min tops. I's be confident to do 20" stumps without a thought now. i'd do 30" but that would take some planning because as soon as you get under the dirt they turn into 40" you would have to grind out and then you have to watch where you put the tractor itself and don't reverse into your own hole. On smaller trees to about 20 " the grinders are very practical and probably the fastest stump removal out there for a home owner I'd say.

Just used it nearly everyday for a fortnight and I'm taking out stumps with the thing now that I didn't think possible. Old, hard and very large well over 32". Takes a little time but what you can do in 10 Min with the thing would be hours any other way.

I know this video is older but if you get a chance, look into mechanical advantage. 2-3 snatch blocks and some heavy duty rope rigged up correct and attached to the drawbar. That tractor pulls them out without much effort and definitely without all the digging.

This definitely is a "rent the as large as I can afford and transport mini excavator" job. Don't beat the hell out your tractor that was not built for this. There's no shame in it. One repair can cost a lot more than a rental. Like Clint Eastwood says : A man's got to know his limitations".

It looked to me like he used his tractor exactly as it was designed. He took it slow, dug a layer at a time, didn’t slam it against the stump. The real concern here is bending your front loader. But I agree with you. If you have the money and can, rent heavy equipment. A cheaper option is just burn it out with charcoal.

At first I thought you might be going to lower just 1 or 2 of the box blade scarifiers and see if they could be used similar to a ripper on a bulldozer. I do that to tear up potholes forming in my driveway. I was also thinking that a piranha tooth-bar from BEXpanded might make this job a little easer and it would be an every use bucket item. Come to think of it with you metal working skills you might be able to buy a couple of scarifiers and modify them into a cutting edge so that they would be more knife like to help cut the smaller roots. We have a cottonwood tree here in Western Washington ((black cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa)) that likes to a root almost as large as the stump diameter. I just discovered your channel and you do a nice job on these videos.

I dug a small trench around a maple stump and put 3 bags of charcoal around it. I let it burn for three days and 90% of it was gone.

I used a chainsaw to cut a chunk out of the center of my stump, then put the charcoal into that hole and let it simmer. Same concept, and it'll take it down to or below the ground.

I’m thinking about drilling a hole through the stump, attaching an eye bolt (straight through and nut on the opposite end), then attach a chain to the eyebolt and the bucket and lift up or pull. I’m thinking this might work for small to medium stumps. I don’t have anything large. I have a Kubota L01 with the LA525 bucket. I think it might have enough strength.

I would not recommend the "Pull" at 3:40 . The cylinders are fully extended; if your bucket ever hit a rock, you can bend your cylinders and that would cost $ $ $ .

Which quick hitch do you have mounted on the back of your tractor? Do you like it or think perhaps a different brand is designed better?

I have the Harbor Freight QH. I haven’t used any other brands, but I think the Land Pride QH would be better quality. The one complaint with the HF model is the shallow depth of the hook. Otherwise, it works well. I also made a video about it here (see #15). Thanks for watching.

If you struggle to get the rest out, get a hot fire going up against the stumps. They will smolder for a few days like a cigarette since the stumps are likely loaded with pitch.

Well you did get it after all but it would have been a lot easier with far less wear and tear on the tractor if you had a toothbar on the bucket.No critisism ,just a suggestion.I use a Piranha bar and it makes clearing brush,roots and digging much easier.

How long did this take you from start to finish? I own about 30 acres of land here in Pocahontas county West Va and have cleared dozens of Hemlocks and have the stumps remaining. I have a Kubota 2501 tractor with an adjustable 7-foot blade that can also dip to a 15-degree angle to rip up the stump roots. I know an excavator is the best options but trying to get an operator here is a scarce as hens teeth!

Too long! These machines just aren’t made for this type of work. I spend several hours and this was a pretty dead stump. I tried again with a stump bucket. Great attachment but really best for really small trees - like maybe 3-4 inch diameter? Check this out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaGWoJ-qrciIpJo

You got the job done, but I don't recommend using a loader for that kind of work. You can bend the hydraulic rams, break the hydraulic ram housing, or both when applying that kind of torque while the ram is extended.

I was gonna same the same. I saw the grapple in the background. I'm about to try a stump about twice that size at Mom's and was planning on using my root rake grapple. I've done some small trees that way and it worked well cutting the roots around it and not disturbing as much soil then pushing or pulling it over. I'll let you know how that works. I'm in a tight spot as well and will only be able to go at it from one side.

Use the scarifyiers on your back attachment. Once you hook the root drive forward to loosen and the use the 3 point hitch to lift the root. There is more lifting power and the engine in front is your counter balance along with the bucket.

100%. Plus I always add ballast by attaching some sort of implement to the 3 pt hitch.
