I tend to agree that with good loadings the .380 ACP is far better than it is often decried and the real life track record supports this, too. I guess the tell-tale would be maybe having a 3 cal shoot off- 380/30sc/9 and maybe have 2-3 women shoot each one and get their raw input or maybe a cpl women and someone with arthritis or wrist/hand issues see what they say! When I see you shoot the 30SC it does appear to be less 'snappy' than the 9mm. the ultimate test would be having recoil sensitive shooters try them all out together! Happy Friday brother Great Stuff!

I haven't decided about the 68 grain Extreme Defender they make. It shoots well out of my EZ, but I'd like to see how it stacks up wound channel wise. All that aside, the 30 Super Carry performed really well, and if I were carrying one of those, this might well be the round in my magazine.

That .380 HST had picture perfect expansion. It combines very good overall power in a small deep concealment handgun. In a shorter barrel, it just might get a couple more inches of penetration, albeit with a little less expansion. I wonder if that HST would still open up at about 875-900 fps? Maybe a shot into the jelly from 25 yards away would be the sweet spot?

Looks like there is more margin for error with the 30 Supercarry. I tried the HST 380 on a denim block and got about the same penetration as the 30, but without any expansion. The 380s open up in naked gel as you see here. But the 30 looks like it could lose a few inches when going through clothing but still expand and penetrate above what the 380 could in the best case.
@ToolsandTargets2 жыл бұрын
Common sense tells you the 30SC is also gonna lose some expansion and pentrate more through cloth/barriers as well. Pretty much any expanding hollow point is gonna penetrate more and expand less through cloth, which is why I don't use it. It's not a mystery what effect it will have.👍

The Xtreme Defender or Penetrators are the only ammo I suggest for anyone with a .380. With an FMJ, you get great penetration with heavy clothing, but not acceptable wound channel. Tools, that was a good job on editing this one with the other 9mm test. If you hadn't mentioned it, nobody would probably even noticed. That 30 SC could have been a .380 killer if they had only kept that one goal in mind.... to make a tiny pistol that would shoot a round that would expand in a pocket pistol caliber. Instead, they tried (and failed) to equal the 9mm. WHY?? Just being the military handgun caliber guarantees that the 9mm will beat out the 30SC in popularity, even if the 30 SC was identical in performance to the 9, which it ain't. They sure dropped the ball! A LCP sized gun that had reliable HP expansion would have probably converted a LOT of .380 carriers over to the new round. But a 9mm sized pistol that performs worse with a REAL 1 round capacity increase (two, with that cheating mag extension) is doomed to fail, I believe.... Keep 'em comin', Tools :)

Tools, if you don't mind paying the $7.95 shipping, Underwood has the Hornady XTP loaded in a nickel-plated +P round. Underwood loads their sh*t HOT, I bet you those 380 rounds might be a nice expander and penetrator in one. Just an FYI, wouldn't mind seeing you test those. I carry it in my Bersa Thunder (3.5 inch barrel) and I have 100% confidence it would get the job done. I think a lot of the issues with 380 rounds not expanding are waaay more prominent in the pocket 380 type guns with ~2 inch barrels. That just ain't enough to get the 380 going. That's why I'm not a big fan of the pocket pistols like the LCP, no fun to shoot and questionable performance, though I'm also a believer that shot placement is more important than the difference between a particular round of similar calibers.

Thanks for your entertaining and informative videos. The 30 Super seems to be a good round but these good rounds have a long uphill road for acceptance. When I want more power and reach, I go with the “original .30 Super Carry”: the 7.62x25mm Tokarev in my Zastava M57A. PPU makes an 85 grain JHP version of the Tokarev round that is suitable for defensive carry purposes, is readily available, and not terribly expensive (around 72 cpr out the door online depending on your source). Might make for an interesting test (HINT HINT 😉).

@@ToolsandTargets I got my Zastava M57A brand new about a year ago for around $500 out the door (including shipping, FFL transfer fee, etc.). Depending on where you get it, it shouldn’t run you more than $600 tops. It’s a nice, solid, “old school” all steel service automatic, but it still weighs only 30 oz (that’s 10 oz less than a full size M1911A1 or Browning High Power). Depending on the brand of ammo, it hits harder than most 9mm or .45 ACP factory loads. I wouldn’t get a milsurp Tok as they are a roll of the dice, especially when it comes to reliably cycling the JHP rounds. The new-build Zastava M57A cycles them just fine.
@TheRobman1392 жыл бұрын
@@ToolsandTargets If you’re gonna invest in an M57A - which would be way cool - here’s the pros and cons on this gun, just so you’re “eyes wide open”: Pros - - Except for the plastic grip panels, there’s no polymer or even aluminum in this firearm. This is a good old fashioned steel gun; milled steel slide and frame, cold hammer forged barrel. She’s built like a tank, designed to Last Forever. - Yet the M57A is significantly lighter and more compact than other all-steel service automatics, especially considering the power of the chambering. - Very reasonable price for an all-steel service automatic from a reputable manufacturer. - Inherently flat shooting, accurate, powerful round. Fun fact: Soviet officers issued the original design - the TT-33 - during WW2 were expected to be able to hit a man-sized target with it at up to 80m. This was not just a “badge of authority” military sidearm; this was a serious combat weapon. - Under lower light conditions, awesome muzzle flash. - Simple, reliable, rugged design. Easy to field strip and maintain. Cons - - The current production M57A differs from the original model issued to the Yugoslavian army in the late 1950s only in the safety mechanism. Otherwise it is exactly the same pistol. Forget about a light mounting rail, an optic mount, or even tritium sights. - Speaking of tritium sights, there is very little in the way of aftermarket accessories for this pistol. You can get different grips for it, and you can switch out the original barrel bushing for one that has a muzzle brake extension (I’ve read that this latter accessory offers no practical advantage, however; some people apparently just think it “looks cool”). You are stuck with the standard military iron sights, which are drift adjustable for windage. On mine, I painted the rear notch fluorescent red and the front blade fluorescent green; under good lighting conditions this definitely helps. - All ammo is imported. There are no major American ammunition manufacturers that produce 7.62x25mm Tokarev. So, to feed this animal you are at the mercy of international supply chains. The brands imported into the US are Fiocchi (Italy), Sellier & Bellot (Czech Republic), and PPU (Serbia). These are all FMJs except a JHP variant from PPU. Right now it is easy to get but it comes and goes. - Like the ammo, good luck finding a holster at your local gun store. You can get holsters but only online from a couple of sources. - Trigger pull on these varies a lot and being designed as a military weapon, they are often made stiff to help avoid NDs. Mine started out at 10 3/4 lbs; I think I’ve got it down to eight or even seven by now through substantial range time and a lot of dry firing. - As an added safety feature, it has a magazine disconnect. Some people consider this a nuisance. Because of this mechanism, the mags do not just drop free when released; you have to pull them out. But hey, it’s a piece of history, a blast to shoot, and a formidable weapon in the hands of those who are willing to adjust to its idiosyncrasies. The M57A is considered by most to be the best Tokarev pistol variant ever made. How often do you get a chance to own a “best in class” firearm for five or six hundred bucks? 😀

@@ToolsandTargets They still might. Shorten the case, call it 30Carry. If that's the plan, makes sense to release the higher power first. Looking forward to see how 30SC performs in a carbine.

We really like the content, thanks & keep it up. As to why the .30 didn't open up better is maybe it uses a harder lead mix to keep it from losing too much speed as it's poking so that it still drives deep. Or some wild sectional density effect on penetration thing not yet pondered upon.

Very good test, again, indeed. The fallacy that most people fall into is comparing the .380ACP to it’s larger brother the 9mm. In short, Apples to Oranges. The size between is no comparison to measure between the two as far as penetration. As you mentioned clearly that .380ACP meets and fulfills the area of small concealment and recoil management without a brick in your pocket. From ALL THE JELLY TESTING throughout this KZbin, 10 inches appears to me to be the industries STANDARD for the smaller round, and it should be for an HP round. There are other rounds, ie. Leigh Extreme Defender/Penetrators, that can and do match the 9mm performance and even better (barrier blind). The 30 Supper Carrier just might fall away as the Glock GAP in .45ACP, and even that platform took a Hotter Round than the standard load in .45ACP, through my investigation. Keep up the good work.

The .30 Super Carry is the ballistic twin to the older .32 H&R Magnum which was designed to provided .38 Special performance and increase cylinder capacity in small revolvers like the J frame from 5 rounds to 6 rounds (20 % increase) The .30 Super carry is designed to equal 9mm performance and add another 20 rounds to a 10 round magazine (20% increase) So the .30 Super Carry is the semi-auto, rimless version of the .32 H&R Magnum. Anyone remember what happened to .32 H&R magnum revolvers? When I must carry a .380, when maximum concealment is needed, I carry a S&W M&P Bodyguard .380. VERY small, VERY light and very easy to conceal or just drop in my pants pocket. I use this same exact ammo, the Federal HST 99gr. "Micro" and get similar expansion and penetration from the Bodyguard's 2-3/4" barrel. Yes, it's a compromise. But it's better than being unarmed.

One thing to consider on penetration is basic anatomy. The heart is directly behind the rib cage along with the lungs....a 10 inch gel test means in self defense straight on shots is deadly. The FBI standards are for LE who get into gun battles where they need to take sideways shots thru the shoulder ....
