What a fantastic video, its rare to be able to watch sustained operation of the valve gear, just fascinating. Particularly as we have just been finalising the valve timing on 01.

I've always wanted to ask someone, how does one set the valves on a steam locomotive?

3801 is a true beauty of a steam engine, one expects steam locomotives to be strong, muscular with a lot of pulling capacity !.....3801 has added beauty and grace to that list as well !....Thanks to the pure labor of love put in by its volunteers we are able to see it in action today !!!

Good to see the late Ian Thornton on the regulator of 01. Such a big grin.

Not wrong, great bloke that is sorely missed. Was a pleasure to chat to Ian on brief basis when he brought 01 down south to the Riverina in the early 2000's R.I.P. Ian Thornton.

What great video and how nice to see the valve gear work8ng in all it glory. Always fascinated by the rocking motion of the combination lever and the radius rod.

The real heroes of this trip are the firemen. For those who don't know, the grade is in 33 or 3% and the 38s are said to be the largest hand-fired locos in the world.
@steverob76372 жыл бұрын
I think you will find the LMS Princess Coronation class have a larger grate - 50 sq.ft vs 47 for the 38.

Magnificent footage of these awesome NSW steam locos going up the grade. Beautifully filmed, lovely Australiana scenery. Is the 3830 likely to be restored so that this can happen again?
@Holland414 ай бұрын
Seeing 38s preserved so wonderfully reminds me of the tragedy of the destruction of the streamlined Victorian S Class Pacific locos in the 1950s. Such a pity we can't see a 38 and an S Class meeting at Albury as they did for many years.

I wonder why it took 2 steam engines? That's a lot of power! The locomotive in green brings back the images of golden age Superman cartoon :D
@TANGARASandOSCARS3 жыл бұрын
They are 4-6-2's - only half the mass is on the driving axles. On that gradient all the power in the world ain't much use if you can't get it down.

I guess that red signal he ran at 1:40 doesn't mean anything important, like STOP?
@bigkiwimike4 жыл бұрын
The signal does not apply to the track they are running on.
@TANGARASandOSCARS3 жыл бұрын
I would assume the Hi-rail is running on a special form of track authority and hence need not obey the signals within the area of that track authority.

I think that after the floating crane Titan sunk on a scrapping trip to Asia, there is nothing big enough in Australia to load or unload such a heavy load onto or off a ship.
