Before any child begins to talk, he’s mastering a set of 11 distinct skills that develop before we begin to hear words. Let me explain how important these skills are… When any one of these skills is disrupted, there’s possibly a language delay. When several are missing, a stall in language development is inevitable. When a child struggles to attain many of these skills, a long-term communication disorder is likely. In this one hour audio-video podcast, we’ll review the 11 skills so that you can understand the key role each skill plays in language development. By the end of the show, you’ll have a pretty good idea for what you should work on to help any toddler begin to communicate. Therapists... get CE credit for only $5... details at this link.. show #385 teachmetotalk....

So here are the 11 foundational pre-linguistic skills, note-taking after listening to the video We need to have all these 11 skills firmly established before we start hearing words. 1. 5.30'' - a child reacts to changes in the environment (see, feel, hear, taste something, react to sensory information). Identify impairments or realise that brain devlp. is not proper when toddlers don't react at 3m.o. and later Examples: tracking ppl across the room, handling rattlers, noticing noises Responding= foundation to communication 2. 8.40'' - a child responds to ppl. Interacts with us. Communicatoin involves 2 ppl , if children enjoy objects VS ppl, or children that are extremely shy > developmental issues. Examples. child smiles, looks at you, responds at you , follow directions, vocalises even if not words Avoid or ignore lang, respond to name, look at us. 3. 12.40'' - begins turn-taking. Participates in extended back and forth actions with ppl. Begins to coo , copies fake cough. Check how long can we keep the back and forth game going. Giving High-fives and going back and forth. They start to participate in longer back and forth responses. Imitation. We wanna see the turns increasing. First it could be 1 or 2. We want to increase the turn taking. Try trading objects - give him something, see if he will try to give it back. 4. 20.10''.- develops a longer attention span. A toddler should stay with an activity for 3-7 min and then may require adult interaction to keep on doing it. Averagr 5min. Look at how they interact with social game (peekaboo, tickles, peekabo again). How long they play with a game. They need the ability to sustain focus. Attention is a gate keeper skill, you need it to develop first before you work with others. If they cannot do that we start thinking about ADHS or sensory regulation/processing issue. Diagnosis starts at shcool age of course. Their internal noise is so loud- they are driven to move or run. 5. 25.00'' - shifts and shares joint attention with others. How a child shares an experience with you. Sfhit attention from an object they are interested in, back to you, back to the object. Triad of attention. We need to make sure the child knows we ' re there, cares we 're there and wants us to participate in that experience. We need to have evidence he does all that-need to make sure the child IS indeed including the adult. Joint attention = both looking at, thinking about, talking about the same thing. A child's ability to follow a point. When you point at sth does he scan the environment to figure out what you're talking about. Through joint attention toddlers begin to assign meaning to words, therefore v.imp. for speaking. Foundation for receptive language. 6. 30.40'' - Plays appropriately with a variety of toys. Cognitive and lang skills get improved through play. This is the foundation of communication. If you feel "my kid doesn't like toys" it's more likely they don't understand the toy. If there isn't a lot of traditional, recognisable, expected play going on (e.g. child spins all toys, dolls, cars ,balls whatever) we cannot really count it as playing with variety. It;s about functional object use - wears a hat, rolls a car, uses the item for it's intended use. It's the basis for developing pretend play, checking out if a kid plays appropriately with lots of different toys first. If not, we teach them how to do it. Understand size, constructional relationships, push button toys, decent problem toys . Does he remember these things? Cognitive skills to appear befor lang : Simple problem solving, cause and effect < early play skills. 7. 35.30'' - receptive lang, how a child understands simple words and follow early directions. Have solid evidence of a child's ability to follow commands before you think they are just too independent or defiant. Simple commands without visual que, they need to respond on auditory info. They need to respond to a variety of commands consistently & frequently - not just that one time they did it. If a child does sth once in a while it's an emerging skill, not an aquired skill. Wee need to strngthen these skills. 8. 43.10'' - Vocalises or makes sounds purposefully. No kid ever talks before they are first "noisy". They need to intentionally use their voice. Parents don't realise how quiet their kids are. Not just cries and yells, we are looking for babble and a lot of vocal play . We can't even thing about words, we need to have noise first. A child who intentionally whines and protest to get sth. Wakes up in the morning and jabbers. We need to facilitate vocal play. 9. 47.40'' - Does the child imitate? Do not focus on getting them to imitate words .e.g. mamma, you need to go back and get them to imitate at easier levels. We start with actions with voice, then actions with their body shaking head for yea or no. Childresn should routinely copy us, what we do and what we say. Daily routines should be imitated at 18m e.g. household activities, hoovering, wiping the table, dusting, being in the bathroom just like parents etc. How does the child use gestures?- wave bye-bye. Imitating actions, gestures, sounds and words. 52.00 don't let the kids on the screen with the hopes they will learn, they need this 1-1 interaction to learn to imitate. 10. 52.40'' - uses early gestures like waving and pointing. Clapping, give me 5, waving bye. How predictive and important gestural developmet n is in terms of talking. FirstWordsProject, com > kids should have 16 gestres by 16 m.o. Big red flag if by 12 m. gestures have not emerged. Before they can use the gestures they have to see the gesturs. Model gestures, easy versions of the gestures. 284 podcast for ideas. 11. 57.20''- Initiates interaction with others to get needs met or to play. Can they do the first step in comunication, take the lead? We are really good at anticipating needs, we need children to initiate this though. Can they do sth to let me know the need to get my attention? Cry? Social interaction? As adults we should be assessing and trying to meet their needs, but by the time they are 1 y.o. they should take the lead and initiate comunication. Make a noise, eye gaze, gesture.

Such a gem 💎 of information to curious parents like me. 😊 I will probably come back to watch this again so I made an outline with the time stamps. 📝 Notable Points * If any of the skills are late there are chances that the child will have a language delay - 39:33 * It's better to get 1-1 interaction from a person vs a screen - 52:16 * Resource for gestures: Check the First words project website for the 16 different gestures by 16 months - 54:29 👉 11 Pre - Linguistic Skills 1. Reacts to events in the environment. Is the Child able to react to incoming sensory information? - 05:23 2. Responds to people. Is the child able to react when we are trying to get him or her to interact or engage with us (Interaction with a wide variety of people)? - 08:45 3. Begins Turn-taking. Is the child able to participate in back and forth exchanges with other people (3 - 5 turns)? - 14:54 4. Develops a longer attention span. Is the child able to focus on an activity for 3 - 6 minutes (excludes screen time) - 20:12 5. Shifts and Shares joint attention with others. Is the child able to shift his attention between an object he was focused on to you and back to the object to share an experience with adults? - 25:01 6. Plays appropriately with a variety of toys. Play is how kids learn almost everything. Is there functional object use or traditional/ recognizable expected play observed from the child? - 30:23 7. Receptive Language. (How does a child understand early words and Follow simple directions. Children must understand words before they are able to talk). Is the child able to follow some simple instructions consistently? - 35:49 8. Vocalizes or makes sounds purposefully (No kid talks until he/she intentionally uses their voice) Is the child doing vocal play and are they doing it with purpose? - 43:07 9. Imitates actions gestures sounds and words. Is a child able to imitate common actions observed from parents (i.e. sweeping, cutting grass etc.)? Is a child able to do copy gestures consistently (i.e. waving bye-bye) - 47:34 10. Uses early gestures like waving and pointing. Is the child able to point or use gestures consistently by 12 months? - 53:36 11. Initiates interaction with others to get needs met or to play. Is the child able to "take the lead" or start the process of letting adults know they need something - 57:17

I think it should be emphasized when you say we are talking about significant delay here. But thatt's okay. There are the delay but if you work at it and give time and effort anything can be achieved in this world.... Brain is always developing so any skill can be learned at any given time... So don't believe in lifelong delays just work at them as you encounter them. Einstein was late talking as well
