This pattern is a bit of a mystery. It's one that we haven't yet been able to find a historical example of (we being the FB geometry family!). It can be traced back to a plate in Prisse d'Avennes' late 19th centruy book of Islamic patterns frm Cairo. It also is in keeping with the Persian wood work that you see with Orosi glass facades in Iran. Regardless of it's mystery, we still love it, but would be happier seeing it in situ somewhere historically... so if you can help... do let me know!

Hey Samira, such a beautiful pattern! I went to one of your workshops and I cannot remember how you decide the size of the first circle in relation to the final size of the watercolour paper you will be transferring it to, would you be able to give a quick reminder? Thanks again for all your wonderful teaching!
@samiramian
@samiramian 5 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the pattern and what arrangement and scale you're after. So for this one, it'a hexagonal tile so for A3 paper, you could go for 13cm, 7cm, or 4.5cm. For the first you could get a large rectangular piece ( one central hexagon with a "quarter" hexagon in each corner), The second could be a circular piece with a central hexagon surrounded by either a half hexagon or full hexagon.

Hey Samira! No matter how close to perfect the rest of the lines are when I draw them, and they all fall into place, the tiny lines that you demonstrate at around 3:28 just never turn out right for me! They never line up with the line across from them. Is there any way I can fix this?

Hi Mishael, that is an especially tricky move that I too have suffered with. I think the main reason I updated the construction! Try kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5rLd36pms9qfrs to see if you find it easier to achieve accuracy!

First of all, I really like this new tutorial style. I tried tesselating this pattern (a few times) but got lost. I realize you are extremely busy, but maybe for your next online tutorial you could show the steps involved. I prefer to draw the tesselation than use the copy/trace method. Thanks for all you do❣

Thanks for the feedback and you are welcome. My approach is such that I want to make it accessible and efficient for producing an artwork. So I prefer creating one unit and repeating by tracing and transferring. I'd suggest looking at other resources, in the FB groups (link via my website), as many others enjoy drawing as you do.

This pattern is the same Plate 41 - J. Bourgoin, 'Arabic Geometrical Pattern and Design'. According Tony Lee, possible source: Cairo, Sultan Haṣan mosque.
@samiramian
@samiramian 5 жыл бұрын
I learnt it from the Issam el Said book, I know the above already, so yes, it's plate 41 in Bourgoin and Tony Lee references Sultan Hasan Mosque in Cairo, and Central Asian lattice work. However to add to this, it’s very likely he copied it from from Prisse d'Avennes, “ Islamic Art in Cairo, p 138. Prisse d'Avennes travelled and published before Bourgoin. Both of them may have misconstrued the examples of the design we do know of, as the actual design itself cant be found in modern day Cairo (it never existed, or didn’t survive - we don’t know). Going by the actual design, it’s very similar to a pattern from Iran IRA0422 (David Wade archive). And with my my research on this lattice work and stained glass work, I arrived at Orosi Glass.
