They’re maybe the most talented group of people to ever walk the stage. Not only were they all multi-talented musically (Freddie with vocals, piano, and a little guitar; Roger with drums, vocals, and even guitar and other instruments; Brian with guitar, piano, and vocals; John with bass and a bunch of other instruments), but they all wrote at least one number one hit song each (which no other band has done, even the Beatles). They’re also all super well-educated and all have at least four-year degrees... Brian has a PhD in astrophysics, and this song is about time/relativity with space travel. John majored in electrical engineering and actually built a custom amp Queen used. Similarly, Brian also built his trademark red special guitar with his dad! Freddie majored in graphic design and also loved designing costumes - he was a super-talented artist as well who drew some great portraits of other singers while still in school. He also designed the Queen logo! Roger was majoring in dentistry at first but I think he ultimately got a degree in biology. They used to perform on the university campus!

All the members of The Beatles only wrote hit songs when the band was already broken up. So Queen does have the distinction of every member in the group writing a number hit song. They are the only band that has been inducted into the songwriters hall of fame as a whole group.

Brian May is considered one of the smartest people ever to walk on a stage. He is a Doctor of Astrophysics. Maybe you wanna do John next, so you have covered all Queen members. Bassist John Deacon almost never sang, only in choir, but he wrote some of their greatest songs: "You're My Best Friend", "Spread Your Wings", "Another One Bites the Dust", "I Want to Break Free" ... among others. I love your Queen journey. If you love this very song, you have dozens of songs to discover from their albums of the mid seventies.

Plus, at age 21, John built the Deacy amp, which Brian used from the 1970s to 90s. In 98, Brian wanted a replica built, but since the original had never needed adjustment or repair, it'd never been worked on, so nobody knew exactly how it worked. It took 12 years to reproduce. Here's a link to the article; hackaday.com/2017/05/08/a-queen-mystery-the-legend-of-the-deacy-amp/

Watching KZbin videos with other rock bandd members saying that the members of Queen were really nice and helpful, but they felt uncomfortable talking to them at times because all of the members were just so damn smart and well-spoken. They had John the engineer and electronics and Brian the PHD astrophysics along with Rodger on the drums and vocals as the dentist. Lol he's never worked in dentistry but only studied Dentistry. FRED was the graphic illustration major and he also got a minor in graphic design. They were a combination of everything that almost didn't really match together but yet they did go together and they Blended so extremely well and they were all feisty and they had to fight for their spot in that band. It made them good because they would fight and argue about which song got on the album and they would have walk out , but they would put aside their personal differences because they knew their business and the band was the golden egg that made them the money. When they decided to finally share all credits in 1988, they got a lot closer and they really should have done that years before because all four of them put into that van even though Brian and Fred did write most of the songs but the hits that John Deacon wrote we're like out of nowhere awesome and another one bites the dust went multi-platinum in the USA. All thanks to Michael Jackson listening to them recording this song and Michael told them to release it that it was going to break the charts in the USA and the band was saying they weren't even sure they were going to put it on the album yet ( the game) Michael told them that they were playing risk with Bohemian Rhapsody and they weren't going to lose anything with another one bites the dust so they released it and it went quadrupal platinum in 4 months.

The high, angelic voice you hear is the drummer, Roger Taylor, whose falsetto is somewhere up in the stratosphere. Brian is correctly Dr. Brian May, and he collaborated with NASA on some of our space projects. He is still singing, playing and touring, and though his hair is now gray, it is still long and curly and still adorable - he is aging like very fine wine!

Queen is outstanding..., a critic said once: no matter if it’s about metal, progressive rock, pop, glam rock, hard rock, pop, rhythm 'n blues, funk and disco, country, gospel and soul, and even music-hall and ragtime....., or any music styles... Queen could create and sing anything in a Queen’s style. They created their own style, You can start listen some harmonies... and you know it’s Queen singing ... with the incomparable Freddie’s voice, well, with Brian’s voice in this AMAZING song!!

Who else would write a folk song about space travel but Queen lead guitarist, Brian May who is more properly known is Dr. Brian May (he has a Ph.D. in Astrophysics specializing in the reflective properties of interplanetary dust)? Brian actually worked with NASA on the New Horizons project. All of the members of Queen were not only musically talented (each member of the group composed songs and every single one of them had hits), they were all well educated. Freddie graduated from Ealing Art College with a degree in Art and Fashion Design. He was either going to be a graphic designer or a fashion designer but, of course, he became a Rock Star instead. He did put his degree to some use, as Freddie designed the very distinctive Queen logo - www.famouslogos.net/queen-logo/. Roger Taylor, the drummer (whose voice is so high, that Freddie used to refer to Roger has having a dog whistle voice), graduated with a degree in biology and was planning to go on to become a dentist. John Deacon (Deacy), the bass guitarist, has a degree in Electronic Engineering. Though he never sang on any of the recordings because, as Deacy so modestly stated when asked if he was planning do a single album, "I can't sing". He did sing harmonies with the band on stages so that means his voice was good but just not the same quality as Freddie's, Brian's, or Roger's. Deacy had other talents in addition to the guitar. He created the Deacy Amp (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deacy_Amp) which Brian used on about 90% of Queen's songs along with his Red Special guitar to create Queen's unique sound. FYI - Brian's guitar, affectionately known as the Red Special was designed and built by Brian and his father when he was around 16 or 17 years old (he said it took 2 years to make). Brian knew the sound he wanted to make but he couldn't afford to buy the type of guitar that might produce it so he made one and he still plays the Red Special (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Special).

ITA. IMO Barcelona is the most amazing album ever produced by a rock star especially because it's a completely different genre of music. Freddie was a musical genius. His singing alone puts him at the top but then he writes the most incredible music as well. He owned every genre he delved into. Such an incredible artist. And then when you add the rest of the band it doesn't get any better.

Your look at 3:06 made me bust a gut and I woke up my husband! 😂 worth it.... Also, John Deacon is the bass player and he does not sing. He'll be the first to tell you he doesn't have a singing voice. However, he's extremely smart (master level engineer that custom made an amp for Brian) and musically SOLID. His bass line is impeccable and he's a great song writer too! He wrote some of Queens biggest hits including Another One Bites the Dust, You're My Best Friend, I Want To Break Free and the famous bass line for Under Pressure. He's quiet and stays in the background but he was thier secret weapon!

Phenomenal reaction! Yours are among my favorites so far! I love your enthusiasm! I totally agree with you, Queen in my opinion still are a band of ageless EMPEROR WIZARDS of the stage and universe (hint at one of their songs "Princes of the universe")! To this day, their musical effect on the soul and crowds are a pure magic all their own that is eternal! Brian is such an underrated singer. As other have said, in school, Brian was working on his phd in Astrophysics when the band really took off, so he had to put his degree on hold. He definitely put his science knowledge to good use in this song by blending in Einstein's clock paradox theory which is when you travel at the speed of light, you'd think only a year has gone by, but on earth, probably one or two hundred years have gone by. Basically its a 1970's precursor to the movie Interstellar in less than five minutes, but more accurate. When Brian wrote 39, he thought the space travel colonization concept sounded cool, but given the sorry state our planet is in now, not so much. Also, in the 2014/1015 Queen concert tour with Adam Lambert, Brian would sing '39 and do a little intro storytelling about the scientific aspects, the song's inspiration, and introduce the "members of the space crew (band)" and they take the audience "on a trip" with the song. Also, Brian is totally lovable, down to earth, gold-hearted, modern genius renaissance man.

Stealing a line from The Matrix, “what will really bend your noodle” is watching Freddie harmonize with his own vocals perfectly in the studio. He just KNEW what and how the harmony should be. It was almost like he had lived this life before. If you have read my comments ( and if you haven’t Faith YOU MUST READ it now! ) on BOH RAP, HERES another example of Freddie (Scaramouch) wearing his nemesis (Harlequin) on stage. I like Freddie singing it live. You should check it out. Brian’s vocals are warm and soothing. You heard Roger singing back up on Somebody to Love Live - that’s why their 3 voices mesh so beautifully together creating that special “Queen Sound”. John (base guitar), didn’t sing. BTW they were first at many things. 1. First to make an actual music video 2. First group to play to stadiums - they were called the stadium rock group. 3. First Rock and Roll group to ever do a concert behind the iron curtain. 4. Every member of Queen had University degrees 5. Every member wrote songs and each one of them had a hit record individually 6. Broke sales record in UK selling 300,000 albums 7. Bohemian Rhapsody was the Christmas #1 twice. 8. First group to experience the audience singing back to them. Brian said in a documentary that back then the Rock groups would go on stage keep their heads down sing and leave. Queen wanted the audience to participate and feel part of the show. Brian came up with We Will RockYou so they could stamp their feet and clap. Freddie wrote We Are the Champions and they played those 2 songs at the end of every concert. Freddie then added in his Aye Oh bit you saw on Live Aid. Freddie loved his fans and had them join in frequently. It was something brand new for rock concerts. Freddie was adamant that they put on a show - not just stand there and sing. 9. They were the first rock group that couldn’t be put in a genre. They could do heavy metal - Stone Cold Crazy - live Is incredible, and then belt out beautiful ballads like Love of my Life- live at Wembley 1986. They are truly a treasure.

If you like those angelic voices you have to listen "White Queen" (studio version) and then go to live version. And then go to Lily Of The Valley, My Fairy King and Nevermore. I saw '39, at live, 2008, in Queen+Paul Rodgers shows and was amizing, the use a acordion to do those lovely chorus.

The VERY BEST Brian performance was an old blues song called Teasin' Around. He sang it at a blues festival, but terrible audio and video. He sings it in a recording that was never released, and his voice there is amazing. All those sexy little nuances and sounds in his voice - you will understand both as a singer/musician and as a woman.

Besides being a legendary guitarist, composer & astrophysicist, he's also one of Great Britain's foremost animal welfare/wildlife conservation activists. He founded a group called "Save Me" (from the title of a Queen song) that works to save foxes & badgers. There are so many reasons to love this man. And keep in mind, this gentleman wrote some of Queen's hardest rocking, most kickass songs in addition to beautiful ballads. As for "39", he still performs it. Saw Queen last summer in Nashville. One minute you & thousands of people in a sold out arena are at a wildly enjoyable rock concert, the next minute you're singing along at a wildly enjoyable hootenanny thanks to Brian, his acoustic guitar & this 60's style folk song.💙

Roger and Freddie are singing the same notes in this song their falsettos are just different. Roger had that sharp high falsetto and Freddie's falsetto was soft during this time. In 1979 Roger lost that high falsetto, and Freddie's falsetto improved during the middle and late 80's.

This was so fun i was laughing along with you, I can't get enough of Queen. i agree with you when you said this song 39 is in the shadows with how many hits Queen has some songs are so underrated because of that fact, plus Queen are a band adored by fans the critics never liked Queen so some albums never got the proper recognition it deserved in my opinion. Queen guitarist Brian May wrote this. The song is about an astronaut who travels to a distant place at near the speed of light. Because of the time dilation that takes place at these speeds, he and his crew return home 100 years later. He has aged only a year but sadly finds that his wife has long passed on and that he is about the same age as his grandchildren, with everyone he knew before being dead for many years. Brian May describes it as a "sci-fi folk song."

The lyrics tell a bittersweet story, but the song is certainly a soothing feel-good one. A lot of it is Brian's voice, it's like a warm blanket. Even his speaking voice is incredible, he should narrate children's audiobooks. Or audiobooks in general, he could talk about theoretical physics or whatever and I would happily listen. There are also some rare gems floating around the internet (like Teasin' Around) that prove Brian could have been an astounding blues singer in his own right if he'd chosen to.

You're 100% right and this is known as the best live band ever and even today with Freddie Mercury. And John, bass player gone today and live singer amongst the other three- he was an awesome bass player but he was very self-conscious about his singing but he could sing well. The one that is playing the guitar is Brian May and he has this warm smooth sounding baritone voice and then Freddie Mercury have that powerful anyting voice except bass and countertenor but Rodger Taylor on the drums and that Angelic voice from God is enough to just blow you over and the three voices combined do sound like the Gates of Heaven just opened up.. this is also a good folk song..

Thanks for another joyous reaction, Faith! This is one of my favorite Queen songs. It's folksy with a mid-century space race vibe. You might want to check out the lyrics or backstory of their songs as it can add perspective to what you're hearing. Their voices are angelic but this is a sad song. Humans have abused mother earth to the point where they need to seek another planet to inhabit. The "volunteers" experience the "time dilation effect" as they leave in '39 and return 100 years later in '39, but they have aged but one year, only to find loved ones are long gone.

I grew up in LA, attended Crenshaw High School and our band played Queen’s music during halftime at football games in 1981. I started my first year in college that same year and Queen had a concert at the Forum in Inglewood Ca. My roommate and I drove 6 hours from UC Santa Cruz to Inglewood Ca to go to this concert. We’re in line to get in and someone was pulling people from the line to watch the concert backstage and go to the after party. I was the only black girl in line and my roommate and I were picked, who knew being a biracial couple would actually work in our favor. Side note my roommate and I have have been married since 1986 and our children are sick of hearing this story.
