There is no mistake that this recorded version is absolutely epic. But, before it was recorded, Freddie played this alone live at Hyde Park! Watching his face as he plays the piano and sings, is so emotionally moving that the first time I heard it, i did cry! It is beyond beautiful!! This song is all Freddie..just him and the piano. And Brian's guitar. The harmonies again were a typical "all Freddie" harmony alone. The same for the beginning of Bohemian Rhapsody where all harmonization is Freddie. I see this song as my song now to Freddie because he literally takes my breath away. Whatever I am going through Freddie and Queen get me through it. It hurts my heart that Freddie has gone. A beautiful man. A wonderful lyricist, vocalist, songwriter, producer, composer and performer. Imagine the songs he could still have written today..now he has gone and taken them all with him. I love Freddie with all my heart and soul. I still cry for him today. Freddie said years ago at an early age..:"I will not be a Rock Star, I will be a Legend". And a Legend he is.

The Studio version is amazing too... a real piece of art, full of Freddie’s harmonies..!!! I love both, but the live version had this magic: Freddie sings like a god... it was him and his piano, with the complicity of the night... with a silent crowd... until the last note!! And when you heard that other song, there's yet another song that's better. It'll go on like that. Forever and ever. But this was indeed one of the hidden gems in Queen's catalogue. The March Of The Black Queen, The Prophet's Song, Who Wants To Live Forever?, Nevermore, It's Late......Just a few from the top of my head. For the live version of You Take My Breath Away please make sure it's Hyde Park 1976. Because he's saying on the mic it's the very first time that song was performed live before it was even recorded in the studio

The first time I heard this I was totally stunned with the harmonies....also the actual tune of the song is mesmerizing. I love the pauses he makes between each verse. The tempo is wonderful and leaves you waiting for the next verse. You almost are holding your breath to hear what comes next. I agree that this is the better version because you can hear all the intricate mixing of the voice harmonies as apposed to the live version which relied more on the emotion of the moment in the concert and the song being sung without the exquisite harmonics. Excellent choice.

Just Freddie (plus Freddie multiplied) and Brian on Guitar. Perfect little masterpiece. Perfection. There's the famous live version that was done before the album release (A Day At The Races, 1976), where it's just Freddie on piano. It's beautiful, too, but of course it doesn't reach the harmonies just in the way the studio version does. It's perfect in its own right, but I understand why Freddie didn't want to do this live after the studio version. With Brian's and Roger's voices, it would've sounded quite a bit differently, and live that's the only thing they could've done without playback, and they only ever used playback for the middle part of Bohemian Rhapsody. (But of course you should still react to the live version.) Also, if you ever get around to doing "Long Away", keep in mind that it starts right after the eerie end of "You take my breath away". (And it's a beautiful song sung by Brian May, kind of a nice contrast to Freddie's thing.)

Freddie was a perfectionist!!! It was just fate the four of them got together. The three voices meshed together perfectly. You had Rogers high voice, Brian’s warm tone and Freddie’s crazy vast octave range. He could do soft beautiful ballads, rock songs with a growl, and even a heavy metal- Stone Cold Crazy live at the Rainbow is amazing. It was before the term “heavy metal “, but it sure was. Metallica did that song also, but Stone Cold Crazy is a Queen song.

“You Take My Breath Away” was written by Freddie Mercury and based on the harmonic minor scale. All of the vocals and piano were done by him, and he performed it by himself at Hyde Park before recording it. There is a vocal interlude between this song and the next one that begins with a wash of vocals (repeating the words “take my breath”) created by echoes (of a multitracked Mercury) regenerating in reverse, which gradually evolves into the repeated phrase “you take my (breath away)” and reintegrates into the next track, “Long Away”.

now we´re in the mid seventies = queen = deities. freddie wrote this for his FEMALE partner mary back then who he was together with for 6 years. it has japanese influence when it comes to the note scale. on the same album, there´s even a song by brian where freddie sings japanese verses, "teo torriatte".

This is excellent as usual for Queen, but my favorite of this is at Hyde Park, live, featuring just Freddie and his piano. It seems so much more intimate and personal, like he telling us a story. Freddie, again, has the perfect piano arrangement here, the way the seemingly simple notes enhance the melody. Anything more would be superfluous.
