I would love to see recommendations for harder to pick/break locks. For those of us looking to purchase a decent lock, like this, would be nice to see what was harder to get into.

Is there a locking hitch pin that you would recommend?
@doyleswearingen62622 жыл бұрын
Thankyou Thankyou and Thankyou!! I put this pin in two plus years ago. I forgot how it operated. You and Google!!

Nice job! There's a technique for tubular picks which is how they were originally intended to be used. I suppose it is a refinement of the 'wiggle like hell' technique. It will open many locks that wiggling alone won't. So you reset he tool and insert it into the lock but before you tension, withdraw the tool a very small amount. Then tension and take your impression. Repeat. The amount that you want to be withdrawing the pick is the amount of 'wiggle' that you would get when a pin is at the shear line and under tension.

I remember seeing my bike lock opened using a simular core like that with a half chewed end of a Bic Biro pen by my friend. This was in the 1980's. I can't believe they still make em. lol

When well-executed, these locks can be effective... but this one was NOT well-executed. :-(

Thanks. I think I'll go with this lock. It's cylinder style means not as many random people are going to have the impressioning tool to open it quickly. I just need to get across the country.
@livydman4 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. I think you should do this while the lock is on a hitch receiver. Picking a lock in ideal conditions is no challenge compared to picking it in the field, where it was designed to be most effective.

Thanks for sharing. I spent alot of time searching for a descent hitch pin lock. I ended up with a stainess one similar to this but with a wafer lock, had a 9mm hole machined in it (before the wafer lock) and have an all stainless marine Lockwood 334M45 and added some commercial serrated pins. When I get my new trailer, I'll put a BiLock core in it. I see so many fantastic devices around like for couplings etc but all fail on the cylinders like this one! Damn frustrating. Thanks for confirming it's demise LPL.

There are not many good commercial solutions in this country.

+Mr. E. someday you may see me working on the disc detainers... I occasionally pick on them, but I've never devoted much time.

Quicker then picking this kind of lock if it's still on the vehicle is to place a length of galvanized pipe over the locking end. Give a slight pull and the lock snaps off at it's thinnest weakest point, every time. Replace the lock with a Grade 8 Bolt, secured in place by a Lock Nut on the threaded end. It's cheaper than these locks and takes longer for thieves to remove. Adding a bit of J-B Weld to the remaining exposed threads greatly increases the time and effort needed to remove, most thieves don't want to work this hard.

GREAT VIDEO MAN. LPl I just like tubular locks no matter what there on or in .this lock i belive is designed to actually spin in the hitch makeing it harder to pick as if you had a pad lock on the hitch it would stay in one position. just my opinion. THANKS FOR SHOWING. 😎😎😎😎😎
@lockpickinglawyer7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I wouldn't be too concerned about spinning... just lean against the hitch and it would lock the pin up.
@raymond4189 Жыл бұрын
I wonder if you could modify a core spinner for tubular locks, that would negate the need for multiple picking

I had a hitch pin lock of a very similar design that completely seized up on me. Anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation and is looking for an easy solution - get a 1" iron pipe from your local home depot or lowes plumbing department, slip it over the lock side of the pin, and break it off. Took literally 1 second and almost no effort.

That moment when he uses a tensioning tool made specifically for tubular locks...and then just grabs a broken pick to pick with. Anyone else wonder how many of those he has?

Stupid question maybe, but what would you lock up with that "rod"? And yeah, unbelievable that they still sell locks that can be impressioned.
@lockpickinglawyer7 жыл бұрын
It's made to fit through the receiver tube on the back of a vehicle into which you insert the trailer hitch... it locks the trailer hitch to the vehicle.

even if it wasn't a crummy lock, the materials used elsewhere are cheap. Even a basic setup, and the paint(it's not powder coated), comes off and the metal starts rusting. It's not even a slightly resistant alloy.

Well if all else fails you could at least use the lock as a truncheon...that might detour someone from stealing... I'm going to sound like a broken record but its to bad these lock manufacturers don't take advantage of the one and only security feature most tubular locks have, the need to pick multiple times to rotate the core...

Realistically a thief is not going to pick this lock. A their is going to put a pipe on the end of it and break it off the tapered locking end is particularly vulnerable to snapping off.

funny how the people who actually know their stuff (BB, LPL)never give recommendations on the best locks to buy.. I've now watched like 50 videos trying to find the best locks for securing my RV.. Maybe not giving recommendations is a strategy to keep us watching?

This is a hitch pin lock, they're used to hold a ball mount (the part that holds the trailer ball) in a trailer hitch receiver on a vehicle so it can pull a trailer.
