I've received multiple requests to SHOW you my boom kit. Ok, uncle! I won't be able to go over all of it but I will show you a good amount of it. If you have any questions, please write your questions in the comments below.
Important Note:
If production isn't renting your boom kit, make sure your sound mixer includes your gear in their sound package inventory. That way if something gets damaged, production will have to replace it. On that note, if Production isn't renting from me, I take every opportunity to get add-on rental for anything from my kit and only bring a basic amount of gear that i need to comfortably do my best.

The boom caddy is a very clever design to deal with long thin objects that want to fall over. A nice wide base that fits nicely through doors. The detachable wheels are great, hanging off the handle to add weight and store nicely. The handle and the way you carry it is ingenious. A very natural way to hold it. Extra bonus: easy to pack in a car because it breaks down into base and upright. What a great design. If you want to add weight, consider old heavy duty automotive disc brake rotors. Machined 15 lbs round hunks of iron with a big hole in the middle. And they are probably free for the asking. They stack nicely in a square milk crate.

That's a good idea. I haven't used my umbrella base is years because now I Iayer up in SPF 50 gear that wicks away the sweat. Even in humid 100 degree weather the sun stays off my skin and I prefer that because I sweat a lot so it actually cools me very effectively. The Talking Dead even gave me a shout out at one point... kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHiYaqatfrR7nbc

Sometimes I get what I asked for. Thanks for the video. Your kit is nothing like I imaged it would be. It was definitely good to see a few things I might want to carry on set. Though I do have a question, but please keep in mind that I'm a rogue amateur. Is it common to use such long poles? My go-to pole is three meters which for the little I do has worked out, with only a couple rare cases where I've wanted something longer.
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 6 жыл бұрын
Matthew Datcher It's always good to have more length. Sometimes you need to go up and over the cameras, assistants, dolly grips, etc but sometimes I go longer so my arms don't have to be over my head. Arms over your head is punishing over time. Not just long takes but over the years. If you back up another few feet, you can lower your arms to shoulder level and that's a lot more comfortable on long takes and over the years.
@matthew.datcher
@matthew.datcher 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. That makes sense. I'm guessing I should look into an upgrade for my pole. My current one is aluminum and probably twice the weight of a professional pole. I can probably handle a longer pole if it's lighter.
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 6 жыл бұрын
Matthew Datcher Yeah, definitely! Aluminum poles are heavy. My friend Matt Price at SoundRolling.com put together an awesome tool called the Boom Pole Cheat Sheet. You can view it on his free app: app.soundrolling.com. In this document he provides all the stats for every major (and many minor) brands of boom pole from aluminum to graphite. Compare lengths and weights of your pole to others then visit a website like TrewAudio.com and look in their used gear under boom poles. A lot of gear deals in there.

Thank you very much for this video. Even though it looks insane at first, I can relate to your idea of staying comfortable and at the same time prepared for anything on set. Love the temperature gun! I would very much like to hear more about planting microphones. How to use the pads you showed at 15:45; how often do you use them; if you sometimes ask the grip for specific mounts and clamps etc. I have seen your video on planting mics and agreed that they're sometimes useful, but we seldom use them in productions here in Brazil. Usually the utility doubles as a second boom operator (of course if the lavs suddenly need adjustments we're in trouble).

For me, your kit didn't jump the shark until the scooter, that was unexpected. I get why you have it though, I've had to run on sets where the bathroom is far away. Gotta get a morph mask of my own, I'm also pretty dedicated to being all blacked out on set! I've noticed that wearing a backpack while booming can be pretty useful for me. On hot days, I can put a hydration pack in there, I can keep about 3 litres of water on me without being too bothered by it and it's completely silent. It's also good for carrying stuff I need quick access to. Which length of pole do you end up using the most? Where did you get those nifty antenna remoting kits?

Fantastic!! Thank you so much for making this video and showing us your kit. So much great perspective and forethought. As I learned from scouting, you can never be too prepared. I actually think this is one of your best videos I've seen because it's a bit more relaxed and feels more personal. We all have so many reasons for the how/why/what of the job that our "kit" is often an extension of ourselves and that absolutely reflects how serious we take it. As someone who's studied music performance and sound engineering in college the switch in 2016 to location and post sound has been amazing, but largely self guided. I really appreciate the general guidance of your channel since mentorship can be difficult to establish for any number of reasons. I'm generally a one man band, but have had the chance to mix on some projects and each time I always wish I was booming instead! Thank you, again, for the inspiration, and if ever in Chicago the first round is on me. Cheers! www.mindexchangemusic.com

@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 6 жыл бұрын
Robert Linthicum The short answer is that a boom operator watches rehearsal and lives on set to determine the best way to record scripted dialogue. An ENG mixer is more like a reality TV sound mixer that walks around with a bag containing a recorder, mixer and receivers. This mixer wires up on screen people and tracks them all while mixing to picture. This video is part of my Building Better Boom Ops series. Start with video 1 in the playlist to learn what I do on a daily basis.

If interested, email me and I'll introduce you to Jason Dozer. I use all of my own booms and accessories. They are well maintained and I rent them to the show. If the show doesn't have the money to rent them, I'll see if the sound mixer will so it's on the company insurance. If not, I won't use them and will use whatever the mixer has. Why internal straight cable and not internal coiled cable or external straight cable? What's your opinion about those different techniques?
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 6 жыл бұрын
I hear internal coiled cables on some of my faster moves. It's certainly easier to manage the cable but I'm not a fan. Externally wrapped is a lot more to manage and that annoys me. Having to spin the boom over and over again just to keep it snug to the pole - not for me. I'm very active when booming. Sometimes I slide my hands up and down the pole while booming and if I were to externally wrap (even with a coiled cable) It's difficult to manage unless you like introducing slack or are OK with hearing cable slap. Straight cable works best for me, my style and workflow.
@thomasclaire9969
@thomasclaire9969 6 жыл бұрын
I love coiled internal cable for my eng work. I agree, external straight cable is a pain in the ass (for me). I will definitely try the internal straight cable ! Thanks
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 6 жыл бұрын
It's much easier to manage but note that you have to keep the cable off the ground if it's muddy, wet or something similar. Otherwise you'll pull all that gack inside of your pole.
