It's a beautiful thing, to get to care for a dog in their elder years, make their life comfortable with little adjustments. You just reminded me of carrying my sweet old husky up and down stairs when she was 15/16 years old... when she was younger she used to drag me up entire mountains and still want to keep going. That's her in my KZbin thumbnail, her name was Uisce which I am sure you know is Irish for water, I bet her and AJ would have gotten on like a house on fire.

@@alidabotes6264 I always thought of her as some mythical creature come to life, so graceful and elegant looking. Hmmm... high maintenance only that she had unending energy until she was maybe 15 years old, so huskies average around 12 years lifespans. If you can manage multiple long walks per day or a large fenced-in yard so your husky could burn off some of it that would help there. They are very intelligent and renowned to be escape artists, can jump over 6 feet from standing position so if you have low walls that would be a problem. When their winter coat is being shed, they need such a thorough brushing, do find some videos of what that looks like, and outside of those times of year, regular brushing but nothing excessive compared to any other longer furred breed I have had the fortune to share time with. Uisce (pronounced Ish-ka) was very affectionate, she always had to have me within her line of sight when she took her naps. She knew words, understood their meanings, would talk back in that husky howl speak, understood hand gestures for sit, stay, lay down, wait, come, drop it, you name it. The intelligence was part of the charm. I was lucky in that I always had more than one dog so she always had a play partner which was very helpful in burning off energy. Don't think that would be an issue so long as you had time to walk your husky with decent walks. While every dog is has unique personalities, she very much had breed characteristics. Out of all the dogs I have had, she was my favorite, still dream about her 5 years later. Do some research on their behavior, plenty of videos of them being somewhat crazy energized and bouncing off walls when they get zoomies indoors. Uisce never chewed furniture and somehow never damaged any while getting zoomies in the house but I have seen videos of huskies chewing up an entire sofa when left home alone all day. Watching a video like that, my thoughts go to things like, maybe that dog wasn't being catered to sufficiently, too much energy, boredom, loneliness, not enough walks. A breed bred to pull sleds for entire days, that is a lot of energy ;) I am no huge energetic person but she taught me to be healthier. Uisce got left at home all day and never destroyed anything so... take from that what you will. She was quite loopy as a puppy but for me that was adorable. If I were not looking after my elderly father as I am doing currently, I would have another one already. My next dog will also be a husky. For me, the perfect balance of temperament, affection, companionship, smarts. Apologies for the novel. You asked about one of my favorite things from my entire life so far.

Honestly, no matter what you two are up to, I’m pretty confident you’ll have a loyal following. I’m madly jealous of the skill with a hand saw, to produce those beautiful mitres. I’m super proud of myself if I can get 90 degrees in two planes, with minimal chipping. But those shallow angles, practically on the rip, with a cross cut hand saw, are a whole other level. I’m green with envy. Apart from anything else, I’d be exhausted after doing the first one, (rough, crooked and twisted!), so trying to do the second would require a rest and a cuppa. By the time I’d failed at that one too, I’d be fit for bed. Power tools are the only way I ever achieve a decent finish. All of that said, tge chemistry between you two is an absolute joy to watch and I never get tired of it. Every single one of your videos has made me smile and, trust me, there have been times when that was virtually impossible. Thank you both. Can’t wait for the next one, already!

Aj probably doesn’t want to walk cause his joints ache. My old Sasha years ago, Doberman x Rhodesian ridgeback, passed at 13 years, she’d get 50 yards from the front gate and demand a taxi to take her home. He’s going to get slower. But all the while he’s sniffing the cats backside, he’s still interested. Liked and dinged.

I laughed so much at Summer hopping over that fence then racing off just in case Louise hadn't done enough physical labour already! AJ wandering around and watching progress from his bed was just perfect, keeping an eye on proceedings to make sure his ramp was up to standard. Our dog Molly is still fairly young but it is a breed that can have issues with hips and she has one leg slightly shorter than the others, so we have soft ramps for her for things like the sofa and stuff because she LOVES jumping 😭. It took her ages to use it properly even with training and not just leap over it from another angle, it's so funny how such clever animals can be so bemused by a ramp. I love all the things you are doing to make sure AJ and Summer have the best home and I am sure all your work will just make it even more perfect for you both too. Thanks for taking us along for the journey.

So there’s AJ in the middle of the path, stopped, not wanting to go any further, coaxing with “come on AJ walkies, come on Bud” doesn’t work. But “do you want to go home” gives an instant response, instant turn round to go back home. That was so funny, as if he’s thinking I’ve got a perfectly good garden and instant shelter if it starts raining! And as for the reputation for Ireland always being wet, I didn’t find that was true. Certainly on the east side from Portmarnock down to Wicklow, I always found the weather to be about the same as in England.

the only time i made my wife cry was after i made a ramp outside the patio door. she had her hips replaced, + the only downstairs toilet is in my garage, boy, it took some cleaning... hey, lou, we have been converting some sprinters for the fire brigade, they are FOUR WHEEL DRIVE !!! an up-to-date insurance policy + a 6 foot deep hole round the back reqd, just lay a trail of snacks to it... stay safe play nice

I’m in the USA Tennessee. My old dog was having problems getting up and walking. I gave her 600 mg glucosamine, 210 mg fish oil and 210 krill oil. She moves much better and has a better quality of life. I found in a local farm supply store.

Our dog is 5.5yrs old , called Stanley and is a lazy git, we have a large garden and that’s all he needs or so he thinks, he refuses point blank to go on more than one walk a day with my husband and he puts his paw on the lead and forces it to the ground and he just says nope! My sister in laws dog did the same but he also liked to lie in the middle of their tiny cul de sac and he wouldn’t move for any car and the neighbours were made to drive around him, he was a giant labradoodle and we lost him 2 years ago. He was so placid , lazy and our Stanley drove him nuts as a puppy wanting him to play all the time and hanging from his ears etc. I love the ramp you have made for him & girls you can see just how much you love each other and the unconditional love for your 2 fur babies. A- J is a handsome looking boy and Summer is a beautiful girl who is adamant she is going to make Louise run daily 😂 I love watching you both & the other van wow is it beautiful 😮😃 whomever wins it will be one lucky happy being. I’m going to take part as I would love the van with my husband & Stanley. I lobe watching because your cottage reminds me of my uncles cottage in Ireland where I spent many years in summers gone past, sadly hehas gone and I miss that old cottage and farm so much ❤

Thanks for taking off AJ's harness. I can see he can move more easily, he can use his shoulder when he's moving around. Also, maybe try walking on just the collar... maybe he doesn't like the harness anymore. JMO When he jumped out of the van last week, I thought he needs a ramp. Well Done!!!! We use a product in the US for our oldsters called Dasuquin and it really seems to help "old bones". Don't know if you can get it in the UK/Ireland. But it really helps our oldsters. All the best!!!

Aww....poor old AJ. Just want to give him a big cuddle and wiggle his wonky right ear! Gordon Bennet though Louise......that ramp was a tad "overengineered" though, don't you reckon? I mean you could walk an Elephant up that thing never mind AJ!😲😜Anyway, credit to you for getting it done and making life easier for poor old AJ's weary bones! At least he's got a proper area now where he can waddle around at his own pace bless him. Keep em coming girls.....love it! 👍

If the wood is a little slick for AJ you may want to consider carpet or a non skid adhesive mat on the steps

I love watching your channel! You two are very entertaining to watch. Louise did an amazing job on the ramp for AJ. One thought I had from experience, is that AJ might like the ramp even more if it had some type of carpeting or anti-slip material on it. I know my dogs never like wood stairs because their paws can slide on the wood and feel much more secure with something that their paws and nails can grip. Can’t wait to see what you do with your cottage!

Oh Louise. You ARE my hero! I never knew could use the handsaw as a right angle guide. I haven't used hand tools in decades. Nice job on the ramp. The "landing" was an excellent touch. So nice to see people who take proper care of their fur babies.

Beautiful version 2.0 of the AJ ramp Louise. 👏👏 You are quite the builder. Now if only AJ would use the ramp instead of trying to bypass it, lol. 😅 Some treats got him running up it like he was running over hot coals. 😂 He is so funny. Like... wth is this? He is such a character. And turning into a statue when he refuses to go one step further. 😂 No is no. Emily, don't tell anyone but I think I know where some snacks are stashed. Just incase you get the munchies. 😅 Good paint work and shopping, hunting and gathering which is very important work.🛒🛍️😁 Glad you both stopped working & went had some fun with friends. Your friends camper van is amazing! We just went to the beach about 100kms from home to camp in our camper van for 1 night, & stayed for 4 nights. Just got home. I picked strawberries from a farm on the way home today & will make jam tomorrow. It's good to get away to have a total change of scenery & some R&R. 😎 Ireland looks beautiful.

The Ramp is stunning and he one very lucky Boy hope he doing ok 🙏🤞 its not nice seeing our furry friends have issues 😢 Aj has a lovely garden to explore ,was funny watching him refuse to walk , as i can relate to one of my cairn terriers he has a bad back ( on medication ). When my terrier mix got old he would bark from my bedroom and I'd go up, carry him off the bed and carry him downstairs. He had me well trained. Lived to 16. Miss him.
