I travelled the world only speaking English because it made me engage with people more. In Colombia I went into a restaurant and the waitresses asked "Soupa?". Si. And then she gave me a choice. Two middle aged ladies on the next table pointed to their soups, I pointed to vegetable. Main course I heard coory, yes I love curry. One of the 2 adies asked me if I enjoyed my meal. "Bien, mucho bien." But she tried to teach me a better word that I couldn't hear. 3 workmen on another table smiled and one wrote the word on a napkin. When I could read it I could say it. The waitress came and asked me if I enjoyed my food and I read the word on the napkin. We all laughed. If I spoke Spanish I order my meal, eat and leave, but because I didn't I had a laugh with the two ladies, the 3 workmen and the waitress. Body language, facial expressions and hand gestures took me round the world and helped me engage with everyone I met.

I'm so glad that emily said she ate beans on toast for quite some time to save money. when i said exactly that last year a few people were quite sarcastically condescending and superior holier than thou dictatorial scoffing me but making cuts is essential to save and that's why I'm on track. Pummel the mortgage is great advice to people whether they are planning on van life or not. Every penny that you pump into the mortgage is several pennies more off the total interest that you pay over the term of the loan. I know that it is harder now with massive gas and electric bills but reducing the mortgage is one of the best money savings that you can make if you can afford it.

I told people I met when I was travelling (staying in dormitories in hostels), "The Journey is not about the places you go, the things you see, or the people you meet, the Journey is what you discover about yourself. Every day it seems we have to overcome Hurdles, with no friends or family there to advise you, you have to deal with it yourself. You face problems you would never face at home, travelling is about how you grow as a person and the new skills you get to put in your social tool box". And you keep those skills for the rest of your life.

Emily - there was a workplace study done here fairly recently that found in-office employees were productive for just about four hours so you're doing just fine with your four and your plus one (the hour, not the Lou). This was a great video especially the section on getting prepared in advance because it does look a lot easier to pull off than it really is. Don't be afraid of French. My French friends tell me that people like it when we try to speak their language (I love it when I get corrected by a native speaker...I always thank them.) Allez mes amis avec joie de vivre!!! Love you guys.

Being debt free is my and my wife's greatest achievement. It has freed us to have no money worries. Clever budgeting and financial skills and doing without paid off. The house is paid for and the car is twelve years old, in good condition, very reliable and paid for. We travelled the world and Europe for the last twenty years. You gave seriously good advice. I love the way you share your lives and give each other space, very important and where many relationships fail. Enjoy each other, the van, the pets, and the journey. ♥🚐

I learnt my languages before the internet & apps but I went on a trip around Eurpe with our American Export Manager and he was amazed how much more productive we were & how much easier it was to get around because I spoke French & German with a smattering of Italian & Spanish. Just being able to stop & ask directions in those pre GPS days was a boon. That experience netted me the European Manager role, so the ability to communicate with locals is really valuable...

I am far from fluent but immersion is one of the best ways to learn once vocabulary and basic verb structure is learned. It's about patterns. Remember to say "Bonjour Madame" (Monsieur) or "Bonjour" with a bright voice whenever you meet someone before asking a question or making a statement. It is VERY polite in France. You could also say "Je prends" or "J'aimerais" un pain au chocolat. Bonne chance avec bon courage! Bises. You are always welcome to my village. Really lovely video... you manage to look at the camera as if you are looking at us. You conversational style is good to listen to.. Well done for sharing what works for yourselves.

I think the work from home culture is definitely going to make it easier for people to travel more whilst holding down their jobs, but I think your new lifestyle is a reminder that van life and travelling is not something you can do without an income. It's like off gridders. There is always a passive income, an inheritance or a stash of savings somewhere in the background supporting it because it really is impossible to live without money. It's great you've manage to keep together such an involved job and still live on the road. Magic!

High Tech is insane and I do get lost in time zone changes often...snack bandit alarms can go awry at times :] I appreciated this vid because it does speak honestly to the fact that there are always "give and takes" to everyone's choices, but the life you dream is totally doable and its admirable that Em is equally vested in those who depend on her (personally and professionally). I've always told my teams that you can come to work in your PJs as long as you give me your best and meet the deadlines. As for learning a language, it's a great idea. I would say French is a main one to learn( not because I speak French ) but like English it's used by many people throughput the world. And many words the same but with an accent. Great viewing, a touch of fresh air.

I was always taught that it's rude to ask what somebody does for a living as it seems you're more interested in what you can get from them than in the person themselves. I spent the first year after I left the army living in a (badly) converted landrover 101 ambulance and it was generally not a good experience as I had not done any of the things you had to prepare for it. I think you've covered pretty much everything that I would have liked to have known beforehand. I've only just started watching your channel and I'll be honest what first attracted me was the two awesome smiles (2 girls.. one campervan video). I find your content refreshing and any video with both a dog and a cat in it has to be worth watching! Stay safe and happy ladies (and give the pets a fuss from me)😊
