VAN BUILD CONFESSIONS.. converting a van yourself can be TOUGH!! Campervan electrical re-wire (EP03)
Is building a campervan difficult?
As we carry on with our winter van life upgrades, the time has come to tackle our off grid DIY campervan electrical system. Lou has spent a lot of time designing our 12 volt electrics and so far it has been pretty good, one of the advantages of a self built campervan is you can really go all out on your electrical set up and what we have beats most systems you would find straight out of the factory in a pre built motorhome.
But, there are a couple of little upgrades that Lou wanted to add that has ended up in her ripping the whole lot out and completely rewiring the whole campervan!
As with all van builds, it's not always easy and doesn't always go as quick as you'd like, this is probably a van life truth we overlooked in our original build series, so, although this video may not be as entertaining or as informative as we'd like, it does show a side to van building that anyone thinking of taking one on should know. We do hope it is of some use to someone out there...
Hopefully you are enjoying this campervan build upgrade series and we are managing to show you how easy, and at the same time, difficult building a van can be!
As usual, we have tried to include our usual female van life foolery, we always love hearing what you lot think in the comments so do let us know, and as always, thank you for watching!
Follow us on our journey as we attempt to create a proper youtube travel series as we, two female travelers and vanlifers, attempt to travel across Europe in our rolling tiny home.
Hit the subscribe button to see where our DIY campervan takes us next and how this van life couple copes living in a van!

Yessss! This! Really good vlog this week and a timely reminder that all ain’t sunshine and roses in van life. Sometimes there are days that are just a hard slog…. Equally, a really timely reminder to label the wiring when it goes in, for anyone thinking of doing a van. Future proofing. 👌🏻 Love the ukulele playing - woman of many talents…. Xx

Couldn't agree more, Geoff. Lou - this video is crammed with all the hallmarks that make your videos so watchable. You were really up against it with the rewire yet your ever improving skills (on both the electrical side AND the editing side) means that I loved watching this. Sending big love to you and Miss Cuts 'n Curlz in the salon... 😉🤣

You got a Fanny joke in, so this was still entertaining as well as being practical & showing that things aren't always straight forward. I'm an Electrician but I normally deal with 230-415v, I've only ever done a couple of 12v circuits for myself. Some of the 415v installations have involved over 100 cables being disconnected from an old panel & reconnected to a new panel. Labeling is essential! 😂 Changing things about & tidying up cables & connections is time consuming but can make a big difference when there's a fault or something needs added or removed. Well Done Lou! 😊❤️🤘

Lou when yr upgrading or working on the van don't worry about weather you're making good content or not, just plant the camera on a tripod or somewhere and you can edit or narrate it later, just concentrate on your build of the van as we all love "The Continuing Adventures of Camper Vibe" and want to see the banter, the travels, the love, the highs and lows of camper life! Proper genuine content. Its why I watch you two. I sat refreshing yt on Sunday wondering where's the bloody vid?! lol But you're right, it'll be whenever and that makes it more genuine. I found your channel through some other van builds a few years ago, and you've both grown so much more natural in front of the camera since then. And Lou, I take inspiration from ALL your editing for when I eventually start making vids. You don't know how many hundreds of times I've climbed over the bed into the garage and back again to work!! And 'vanstanding'... I'm a pro at that. We do need a pic of Em's hair though...

Move the heater to the garage and you can run 2 outlets with minimal pipework. If you can move the batteries towards the back doors should give you enough space for the heater in front of the batteries.
@campervibe
@campervibe 3 жыл бұрын
Hi per, I looked at that but where it would need to slot there’s not enough space underneath to be able to drill the big hole, so I’d have to move the kitchen unit and I just don’t think it’s worth taking it that far. I also don’t want it too close to the fridge and if I avoid that too I end up having it right where the main storage back there is. I am considering adding a second one lol!

Once again not boring… I know ‘zilch’ about electrics… but I was in awe of how you thought it all out …and then persevered ,strained, swore and hurt yourself in multiple places!! to rearranged all that tangle of ‘Spaghetti’ into a better configuration to accommodate that lousy pipe…AND… make extra space for Emily’s Snacks (I presume!!!😃👏)… the greatest gift of all😍….Well done for thinking all of that out … there is Genius under that Hat!!…You will not get any advice or criticism from me (‘cos’ I know nothing!!)..Also.. it’s obviously far more difficult to work around an already built interior… than if it was before the fittings were in!!…Reality Checks are often needed.. in stead of a glossy version of a very Sh##ty Job!!!… But doing it PROPER.. is best…and you will be proud of result👏👏👏… The Vile Weather was a nightmare (thought you would still be in the warehouse)…hope that fence stays where it is!!.. Enjoyed Emily’s visit to the Hairdresser… at least she would have ALOT to say , when they asked if she’d been “anywhere nice on her holidays!!🤣🤣🤣”….Glad you watched the ‘Curling’… great results (not Ems hair!!)…🇬🇧🏆🥇🥇… will see you when we see you…Perfectly Understandable 👍👍…Get one of those wonderful Stews on the go Emily!!..yummy… Cheers folks ! Brilliant video Louise 👍 I absolutely love your honesty and openness! We are sitting in our van tonight in a very wet town in Normandy on our way home to Ireland. Past three months on the road has highlighted a lot of flaws/defects/issues in our van that we will address in the autumn. I have some mechanical stuff to do first when we get home next week... Then a complete rejig of how we live in the van. My wife has got pissed of with the U shape 'lounge'. Making up the bed every night and stripping it every morning is a pain...so a fixed bed with storage underneath is what we will be doing and our dog has endured a lot of discomfort with not having enough space to stretch out... When you think you have finished, think again! Keep on keeping on young lady, you are an inspiration!!!

I love that you take Emily's snack storage (and storage in general) into consideration during the rebuilding. Every adjustment impacts something. Thinking 2, 6, 12 steps ahead takes longer but in the long term, will save time and money. The time you spent tidying and organizing the wiring system will be repaid tenfold down the road. Your response time later will be quicker, your ability to adjust and react to emergencies will be faster and done with confidence. All because you took the time (and head thumps) now.

I love this vid! I do have one remark: don't use the inverter for 230v if you have a mains hookup, that is very inefficient, actually it would be much better to try to find a 12v power supply for your laptop so won't need the inverter even of the mains.
@campervibe
@campervibe 3 жыл бұрын
Hi jan, unfortunately you can’t get a 12v charger powerful enough to run my laptop, (believe me I’ve tried, even if they are the correct voltage when editing the battery dies quicker than they give it power) it’s very power hungry and dell have actually made it impossible as third party chargers won’t work on this particular laptop anyway, which is very frustrating lol! With regards to the inverter, I agree, they are incredibly inefficient, but when hooked up it won’t matter as the victron mains charger will put in the batteries far more than the inverter takes out, so they’ll sit at full the whole time. If not hooked up then agreed, it makes no sense to convert 12v to 240v then back down to 19v or so. Thanks so much for watching 😀😀

Ok Lou, I am 6 mins in and stopped to write. This is exactly what people need to see if they are thinking of going down this route of self build/modification. It is real life and honest (I have commented before about your honest videos). Now young lady, FFS cut yourself some slack, de stress and have a bubble bath with Em (or whatever you girls do to relieve tension). I really enjoy your output, , raw and fanny warts and all. So... do what you can when you can, take your time, give us short progress updates (or lack of progress) and get back to enjoying yourself young lady. OCD is good, wanting the best is a good trait to have in your character, you have done this before. Right now your not going anywhere are you? Floods, War, Hurricanes, Landslips, -24C temperatures, 3 feet of snow, no power and so on do not make for great Camper travel just now do they. Big hug from me, now back to the video for me and work for you.

A very interesting video, Louise. You are a true polymath. Video blogger of high quality, environmental activist and commentator, "sick" humour, and jack of all trades. You build and refit a tiny-home on wheels: electrics, plumbing, carpentry, design, everything. Energy, and drive. You can make any subject interesting. And it isn't just about the subjects [interesting though they are], it is about the Camper Vibe attitude to life. Tackle it head on, and "crack-on". So it isn't all about van builds, or tourism, it is reality TV. Real reality TV and not the crap you get from a Commercial/Corporate media channel.

More power to you for doing it all yourself. I started out with a 9m bus that was already converted when I bought it, but it was too big for the places I wanted to go. Went down to a 7m bus, but the less said about that, the better. 2 years ago I bought a 2012 4.3m caravan. I am an architectural designer/project manager by profession, so had worked out exactly what I wanted. Last October I had a major upgrade done.......fresh and grey water tanks, solar, lithium battery, 2000w inverter, Maxair fan, wind-out awning and a number of other small upgrades. However I was short on time (live in my caravan full time), so I got an RV company to do the work. 3 men full time for 3 days. They did exactly what I wanted and installed everything exactly where I wanted. They did an awesome job and I wouldn't change anything. One thing they were able to do is connect every 230 volt plug in the caravan to the inverter (can use my toasted sandwich maker etc even when I am off-grid). However I can still use the plugs on mains power when plugged in at campgrounds etc, without having to use the inverter.

I just spent last weekend building a cutlery drawer for my Land Rover. One bloody drawer, about 12" x 10", with a couple of dividers in it, and it took ALL weekend to get it done and fitted. If anybody's thinking about building a van, it's definitely worth doing if you have the skills but never, never, underestimate the time stuff takes. You'll see video's where people say "I built my van in two weeks" but their water supply is a jerry can and their electrics is a Jackery. Doing it properly - permanently - takes months.... and will probably never be "finished".

I was riveted (if you excuse the pun) to every second of this content. The downside of fast cut and timelapse videos is that we lose a sense of reality about how long tasks take, which creates dissonance between our lives and how we perceive the lives of others to be. Your relatable content took us along every head-bumping, finger-snagging, drawer-straddling step of a tedious repetitive task. You struck the perfect medium between the boredom of the Big Brother fly-on-the-wall format which documents every nano second of people sleeping, and the timelapse videos which animate the building of a skyscraper in 60 seconds. I was so engrossed that when you thought your head was stuck my imagination turned to "what if it did?". What if you couldn't reach your phone, how long would you be stuck there before Em came looking (my guess is AGES as she was making the most of her 'me time' likely to make the most of your silence); would you get tired and fall asleep on your knees; how long before you got thirsty....etc. This is where your "uninteresting" content took my imagination. Trust your audience and rest assured the analytics will let you know when your content needs a revival. There endeth the sermon for today!

Your so experienced so it’s ace to see a video like this that no matter how skilled you are that it’s ok that what seems an easy job still takes a day. I’ve often said to my partner in the midst of our van build stress n arguing how I admire u have the patience to deal with the stress of the problems but also have to think about filming it all at the same time.
