As far as modeling devices go, these headphones sound remarkably “analog.” There’s a specific quality to tube distortion that is hard to describe, but these headphones do it as well or better than anything else I’ve tried. I have a Helix Floor and as much as I hate to admit it, there’s something about these headphones that makes them “feel” and sound more realistic to me. It might be that they are simulating a cab in a room instead of a mic’d cab as all other modeling devices do. The feel, dynamics and immediacy with these headphones is amazing.

That's exactly how I managed to reamp all these guitar tracks back into the headphones for audio capture. Guitar > DI > Interface > Reamp > Transmitter > Waza > 3DIO > Interface. 1) In the early '80s, a number of hi-fi audio devices were produced, going variously under the name "image enhancer", "sonic hologram", and other terms. I have 3 such gadgets, all using bucket-brigade chips/circuits. Ten years later, the same thing showed up digitally as Q-sound, and around a decade after that, we had the SRS (sound retrieval system) software option on Windows Media Player. All of these aimed to create a binaural listening experience with what gets called a "sound shadow". In its most primitive analog form, a "difference" signal (left-minus right, right-minus-left) would be synthesized for each channel, and cross-fed to the opposite channel with a few milliseconds' delay and some lowpass filtering, to mimic what happens when a sound source is coming from off to the side, and reaches the opposite ear via reflections. It was the sort of thing you didn't really notice that much when you turned it on, but when you turned it off, the reaction was generally "Hey, where did the music go?!". Really quite a striking improvement, that created a more "3-D" soundstage, and would decrease listener fatigue, even though it tended to increase noise levels a bit. But you could close your eyes and "hear" where each instrument was positioned. Of course, the effect was fixed and assumed the listener was always dead-centre, facing forward. The Waza headphones appear to take advantage of two things: a) improved digital modelling of distance, location, and room properties, and b) the gyroscopic sensors we have in many mobile devices (and things like the Source Audio Hot Hand controller) that rotate the screen in response to movement in 3-D space. The listener is no longer required to sit perfectly still to have a sense of physical-spatial realism, and similarly not required to adjust anything to have the effect track where they are facing. 2) Twenty years back, a number of artists recorded albums using binaural mic systems, the late great Lou Reed among them. Personally, I've never listened to any of these albums, but I understand the goal was to have a greater sense of "being in the room" with the artists. 3) Is that a Red Llama t-shirt?

@ScienceofLoud4 жыл бұрын
Ahhh the old Lavender Town creepy pasta. Do you have a write up of your findings?
@ruassmarkt4 жыл бұрын
Sadly no, as the project itself was more of an art stunt, we built a tower with a shaker inside that made noise when you aproached it. Then you needed to plug in headphones and press a buzzer to start hearing some binaural audio. Depending on hearing fatique (older people tend to hear less and we programmed beats to around 20 kHz) people started to feel... things. I would have loved to study different effects, sadly it was just a short exhibition and other people had to show cool things too.

I'm nearly convinced to get them - but unfortunately my ears do not like closed-back over-ear headphones. Like not at all. In-ears are fine, On-ears are fine mostly but over-ears are a no go. My recommendation for anyone considering getting these: try wearing closed-back over-ear headphones first and see if your ears agree with them. 30 minutes is the maximum for me and doing that every day can backfire One thing I'm wondering, though: when will we see the first VR integration? Maybe with a specialized app on your phone? That'd be damn cool, like actual virtual amp experience. Actually fiddling with the knobs and effects in VR space

I have most of my guitar gear for more than 10 years. How much do you expect to be able to use the same battery in these? 3-4 years? For 440 euros?! You should also be able to plug it into your amps and not rely only on the crappy digital simed amps from boss. I also haven’t found anyone that cares for the gyro sound thingy.

Very nice demonstration Colin - the binaural audio is cool but confirmed to me unfortunately Boss made a huge design mistake with these (at least imo) by placing the virtual speakers level with the user in their modelling so it's not as realistic a sound character. I've tried a set of these, and in person I feels like someone has mounted an amp directly at head height, so even with the reverb engaged it feels unnatural like the sound is being 'targeted' at the users head. I did wonder if it was just the environment I tried them in but obviously not. It's a shame, as whilst you can't expect a perfect sound from something virtually modelled, I would have thought they would have given options for the height/angle of the virtual cab to compensate and make it a more natural sound.
@AlanDong4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I've tried several binauralizing and spatial audio FX software tools and always find that it sounds not quite right exactly at 0°elevation. I tend to set it to -15° or so and that makes the directionality sound much more realistic.
@gregsacks87204 жыл бұрын
Hey Colin, thanks for the deep dive! Question for you...I've read about some concerns about the sound drifting, and the Boss FAQ itself mentions that this can be an issue if one moves one's head non-horizontally. I imagine that this is an issue that can be resolved to a great extent by software updates, but I was curious if it's something you'd encountered while, say, headbanging away on these things? I have Tourette's Syndrome and my most prominent tics are small and somewhat jerky head motions, so if this phenomenon does occur I have to wonder if it might be an issue for edge-case users such as myself more than most others.
