Around 2001, I picked up one of these blondes along with a slightly newer oxblood cloth Bassman head and cab both from a guy in Sarasota, Florida. They had belonged to his brother who played a lot, but was later sent to vietnam. Unfortunately, he didn't make it home and the brother who had them, had them stored ever since. I bought them with the promise that I would not sell them, but would rather use them. After some work, I got them firing on all cylinders and they've been my only amps ever since. If by chance the guy that sold me these is reading, your brother's amps are safe, cared for and are still cranking out joy!

McCartney used a 1964 6G6-B starting on Revolver. His setting according to photos were normal channel, 8 volume, 8 treble 2 bass and presence on 10. He drove it with the Tone Bender pedal. This is the sound of the Taxman solo. They really come alive when cranked above 6. Of course Brian Setzer may be the most famous blonde Bassman player ever.

McCartney actually started using this amp record all his bass parts beginning in 1964, so the amp was brand new. Of course this was before the DI sound of ‘68-‘69. There’s a photo from the recording session of I Feel Fine from October 18, 1964, of John and Paul using this amp to generate the feedback at the beginning of the song

When graduated from high school in 1977, I used my graduation money to buy a used, 1965 JTM45 50w head for $400, which was a bunch of money back then. Still have it. Its just sublime and its versatility is unparalleled. That amp loves single coils, especially P90's. I can hear the sonic "DNA" that's shared between this Bassman and the JTM45. For those who don't know, the JTM45 is unique among Marshall amps because its essentially based upon the Bassman circuit. Thank you for sharing this great amp! EDIT: Damn, son! Every time you play that TV Junior, I am just blown away by its immaculate intonation. That gitfiddle honks!

Great sound Matt. Slight correction, the wheat grille-cloth was carried over into the "last" era of the "blonde" model Bassman's, the '64 Tuxedo 6G6-C models. Those had Black faceplates, Black tolex, Wheat Grille-cloth, White knobs. Having played most everything out there, for my money the 6G6-B/C is the greatest overall Fender amp of all time.

Awesome video Matt! I own a blonde 63 Bassman as well (and have the same thought) and a 59 tweed Bassman reissue. It is hard for me to choose between them but I think they both serve amazingly different purposes. I find that I can really hear the difference in sounds, frequency, and tones when I compare them with humbuckers via my SG. While playing around with my 63, I found that between #6 and #8 on the treble dial, things really started to change for the better. Turning the dial to 8 (and above) realllly open up the volume, treble (obviously), and also the gain. All that matters after that is dialling in the treble control on my guitar to get the best sound with it, because the 63 can have some pretty ear-hurting high frequencies. Anyway, the blonde 63 is phenomenal, I’ve done a lot of recording so far with it, and a lot of that plugged straight in. Cheers man!

I bought Michael Bloomfield’s blond bassman cab and head . I bought it from him personally not long before his passing . I can’t remember the year (mid seventies) sounded great but at the time there wasn’t a good way to get it to sound good at a low volume in the clubs I was playing. One of my biggest mistakes was selling it . Bought an early Mesa Boogie . Silly me !

Great amp Matthew. Its becoming harder to finder a 6G6-B in good condition. I recently acquired a mint one made in December, 1963. Its one of the first ones with the black faceplate, and raised Fender logo on smooth blonde tolex. It even has the original tubes in it. Your amp appears to have the dark brown faceplate still and the flat Fender logo which would date it to earlier than November 1963. My Dec. 64 amp has the AA864 Bassman filter cap values, which is not on the schematic. Clearly during that month, they were transitioning towards AA864 but were not there yet, or really even that close. The next iteration was the short lived, unofficial 6G6-C circuit, many of which had black tolex, then the AA864s. I have one of those as well and the tone is quite different from 6G6-B. Both are great. 6G6-B have a bit more mids and fuzzier crunch, with AA864 the first true blackface Bassman being cleaner and tighter.

I got a 64. If you understand circuitry it's very unique with the tone controls especially the bass side. The early Marshall's are actually closer to the Tweed 59' Bassman in design. But if I had to choose it would be my JMP 50 I like the extra gain. But for slide the Bassman.

I’ve had a 50W Bassman head from 1969 since the mid-80s, but without the cabinet. I still have yet to find an amp that compares. I get the best tone by cascading the “Bass” input to the “Normal” input with a short patch cable. That natural tube overdrive from that circuitry is unparalleled, IMO.

Your album is great. It's there a way you could put a long compilation together of you noodling the blues like on most of you videos? I would really enjoy putting that on the background for work or study. It doesn't need to be songs, just random noodling like you do. I would stream that on repeat forever.
