I'm pretty sure I want one of these...although, I have to say that I would have *begged* for one as a kid. I was obsessed with lava lamps and plasma lamps, but I could never get one. At the end of the day, when a birthday rolled around and my parents basically gave me the option of some video game stuff or a lava lamp, it was an easy choice that never resulted in a lava lamp.

stupot42 well there's not much about safety issue.. It's just a simple 5v circuit.. But he would change the LEDs to pink I guess
@superdau7 жыл бұрын
The 10 second shot of the circuitry is enough to see that it's an 8pin micro with three driver transistors (with base resistors), according series resistors for the LEDs and one supply smoothing cap. The touch sensor will be a ready made module. There also apparently are versions that run on batteries. That's all. The thing is as safe as the USB power supply you use.
@lisergi7 жыл бұрын
Big Clive probably will understand that pcb and draw its schematic in 2 min xD.
@jincyquones7 жыл бұрын
superdau is exactly right. A plain 9V battery is more dangerous than anything in the base itself, and Clive has probably taken apart several USB power adapters identical to the one this comes with. The only thing even remotely interesting is the capacitive touch sensor, and that will just be an IC doing all the interesting stuff and a drop-down resistor. Some manufacturer in China is making bank on a circuit that a beginner electronics engineer could probably whip up in a few hours.

I think you strike the perfect balance between old tech videos and from time to time new or interesting tech stuff videos
@xaytana7 жыл бұрын
The designs of these aren't that hard to produce, though my method probably isn't the most efficient. You can go into a program like Sketchup and make your 3d object, put a map on that object, and then find the angle you want it at, then project the object onto a 2d surface. Then you have to do more work to make it into a file a laser cutter/cnc engraver can use, then produce a physical copy. Of course, there's probably more efficient ways, or easier ways to produce this. But using cad to project a 3d object onto a 2d surface would give you literally unlimited amounts of objects you can do this with. Also, you should do one of those 'holographic' display things, it's basically a display that projects 4 images onto a pyramid of glass or acrylic, basically the clear material reflects the image into the center, and you get a 3d image based on reflections and stuff. I think they're pretty cool, though large ones do take up a lot of space.

I bought one of these about six months ago; the R2D2 with the black base like shown in your video. It's pretty cool. Some facts: 1. The switch is not a touch switch. It appears to be a proximity switch. You don't need to to touch the switch. Hold your finger about 1/8 inch above the switch (don't touch it) for about 1/2 a second and then remove your finger and this will trigger the switch. It works this way on my unit. 2. The black plastic case is cheap plastic. Mine had some spots on it that looked like water spots. I tried cleaning it with Windex window cleaner or rubbing alcohol, I don’t' remember which one, and it started to dissolve the case.

Good info. I've been trying to find a circuit for a button that would work through glass. This might be a good path to pursue.
@gwc14107 жыл бұрын
I have seen modules for these type of non contact switches for sale, but I don't remember where. Maybe try ebay, Sparkfun, etc. There are also ICs you can buy and make your own circuit. They are supposed to work through thin layers of wood, plastic, etc. I would think glass too. I've thought it would be cool to build some project with no visible power switch, just move your hand near a certain place and the item turns on.

I had one of these and the USB connector on it did come loose from the PCB. It may have been a one off bad unit as the solder job on it was pretty poor compared to the one you have.
@JuanHerrero7 жыл бұрын
That USB socket is indeed crap and likely to break. Because it is surface mounted, good ones have metal bits go through the circuit board and bent or soldered on the other side, giving good mechanical strain relief. I had a cheap Alcatel brand flip phone, the software was excellent (it worked as a USB webcam, a feature I would love to see on today's phones), but the hardware was put together cheaply, and the USB lifted off the board a few months after the warranty expired.

Do you all call malls shopping centers? In my state, 'shopping center' refers only to like a bunch of stores all together, either unconnected at all, or in a 'strip mall' sort of set up, but always only outside, with separate doors for all. Stalls would only really exist in the enclosed setting of a mall.

I was also annoyed by the color change and only one color looks boring. The solution was simple: I removed the LEDs and electronics and replaced them with a Wemos D1 mini (ESP8266 Arduino) and two WS2812B LEDs. Together with the WLED software, I can now set any color and brightness via WLAN using a very nice GUI. I can also use it to call up additional effects, such as a slow color changer, breath or fade. The LEDs and the Wemos together cost 6-8 € and the conversion can be done in a few minutes. Now the 3D illusion is a small eye catcher that looks really good.
