One of the first things I remember about being in the UK was that I never felt the ground move. I come from the SF Bay Area, so I have this theory that because there are small quakes daily that we "don't feel" we actually DO feel them subconsciously and are used to shaking up to a certain magnitude and don't think of it. But if we step foot onto an area without fault lines, suddenly things feel still, no vibrations, like the ground is ROCKS and not sand slowly shifting or something. London had no movement at all, felt solid. New York was the same for me. Solid. Chicago solid. Florida even, solid. Puerto Rico I felt movement, Japan I felt movement, Hong Kong I felt movement, all the way to Calgary I felt movement. Paris, nope, still as a rock. Brussels, Bruges, all of it, still as rocks. Which makes me feel really uneasy because I know none of these buildings in these solid areas, even NYC, are built to withstand any ground movements and all the ones in California, Japan and HK are.
@LadyMavenАй бұрын
I'm from Chicago and, now, live in CA. While I was living in Chicago near the lake, we did have a moderate earthquake. It felt and sounded like a subway. Only, we were nowhere near a subway and had certainly never experienced such a thing before. We had no idea it was a earthquake, until it was reported shortly thereafter. One of the largest and most dangerous faults runs right through the Midwest, not far from the Mississippi River, the Madrid fault that caused great devastation during the late 1800's with two major quakes. There have also been quakes in NY, just not as many as in CA and other parts. Much of the lakefront of Chicago is built on landfill from the Great Chicago Fire and, so, is not exactly "solid." Sadly, unlike CA, strict earthquake building codes are not required in less prone areas. So, if any big one did hit, it would be catastrophic. This is also the case in many foreign countries. They suffer more damage due to the lack of strict building codes.
@LadyMavenАй бұрын
It scares me that, even with Japan's strict building codes, cities still have been devastated.

I'm in the UK, and live in the Greater London area. Thankfully have never experienced an earthquake. There are occasional low-level tremors in some parts of the country, but these only go as far as rattling the fancy display plates on your shelves and dislodging a bit of masonry or tiles here and there. Us Brits are very lucky in this regard that we aren't near a major fault line.
@larailfan17142 ай бұрын
London has a lot of unreinforced masonry buildings and a lot of people that don’t have earthquake drills at school and work so an earthquake here would be devastating.

Another great video! This one shows the difference in building tolerances in an area not accustomed to earthquakes and one that is. In California, it usually takes something in the mid-6 to low-7 range to start knocking buildings down, and many of those are nonreinforced structures.

Yes, it's known as the Dodger Bank earthquake, named after the first place on the East Anglia coast where the seismic waves first made landfall. All we can say about that quake is thank god its epicenter was well out to sea. If it had been centered on land close to London, there would be the sort of devastating like what is being depicted in this video, with the death toll likely being in the tens of thousands.
@Tricia_K2 ай бұрын

A long time ago (about 50 years ago) we had an earthquake. It was like a micro-quake in the Midlands area. The ground did shake very lightly. Shocking for us, so don't panic, kids if you ever feel an earthquake in the UK.
@sheilasmith7991Ай бұрын
We rarely have earthquakes in England so none of our buildings are constructed to be earthquake proof. Having said that when I was a kid we had a 5.4 earthquake in the area I grew up, but the damage was minimal, even with hundreds of medieval buildings. Damage was limited to a couple of chimneys falling. It was more interesting than scary. I thought a bomb had exploded to start with, but after a few seconds I realised what it was. It happend in the space of around 10 seconds, and came so unexpectedly most people were saying 'what the hell was that'? That was 1989 and apart from a couple of tiny shocks barely felt, nothing else has happened.
