2 yrs old but useful to me today. Had to search quite a bit to find this - all other examples to create a mask to mask out a render to show the background image didn't work but this did. It was in all the compositor set up.

Awesome! Glad it was helpful. Yes a lot of Blender tips hold up even after a few years. Even though there are some great new techniques as well. Thanks for watching our channel!

Thank you so much! This was exactly what I was looking for. I have footage but I wanted my cg character behind some of the footage and this is exactly what I needed to see.

Also you can use Mist with the Mask in the compositor to hide the ones only behind her.
@LightArchitect3 жыл бұрын
This could be a good idea. You might be able to use a mist pass but my guess is a z-pass could be used to mask the depth in the scene better. I would have to test it though to be sure. Edit: I thought this was a question lol rather than a statement. I will try it out thanks!

Brilliant. Please can there be a tutorial for a car animation using stock road footage. Would be awesome. 👌😇
@dyfx97883 жыл бұрын
@@navidumardaraz7163 what?? thats just motion track a scene, get a model of a car (or model it yourself) and animate it and then composite it. When you dont have a tutorial for a specific effect you want to do, combine tutorials. there are billions of tracking tutorials, thousands of car animation tutorials and trillions of compositing tutorials. Just combine the tutorials together and get the result.

@@dyfx9788 thanks im subscribed to your channel. Will do as you have suggested.

its kind of easy to rotoscope in compositor and make a separate alpha image sequence and import it in scene so that only the masked portion is visible and other remaining plane is transparent

Great tutorial!!! Thanks a lot! I have just one question, is there any way to feather the holdout layer so that we can blend our cg elements more realistically?
@LightArchitect2 жыл бұрын
Hey Leon, This particular way would only work for harder edges. I'll see if there is another way. Probably with some adjustments that would be possible in the compositor. Would need some different view layer setups though.

@@LightArchitect Thank you, it would be awesome to find out how to feather the edges :)

Thanks for this tutorial, this is now fine for a somewhat static video, but for motion videos I think it's a bit more complicated..... or not?
@LightArchitect3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. Yes you are correct. However if the geometry that you are masking as a holdout is a static object(like a building for example) then the holdout works as the camera is moving around it as long as you have tracked accurately.
@Pascal742643 жыл бұрын
@@LightArchitect Hi Brad, yes thank for the info, this holdout system is really great! i don't know how long it's been in blender, but it's fantastic, before when i created masks i had to play with textures to make them invisible, now it's just a click! however i think that to mask a moving subject/object in the video to make the insects appear behind you have to make the mask follow the movements frame by frame... and this still not being automated is a bit of a job! or are there other ways? very important tutorial would be also how to use spyderfy to create scenes like: I'm looking for boots to put all of a sudden a boot falls and from inside the boot comes out one or more spiders! I tried to do this and I used some objects for collision but as soon as they approach the object of collision jump and come out from where they should not ... however this addon is together with others a great job ... thanks Brad.

so for some reason my image shows the mask in the compositing page but when I go back to layout the cg I want to be behind some go my footage is gone, or at least doesn't show up, any ideas?

My question is how to animate that 2d object which you used as masking please reply
@arglebargle17 Жыл бұрын
This begins by loading a clip. I don't HAVE a clip. I'm making the clip. How do I fricking create a mask for what I'm working on? I want a simple elliptical mask to highlight something on a still image in a video. I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this. 2 hours and almost every masking tutorial and I'm getting nowhere.

Render the clip. Then mask it

What if our actor is moving?
@LightArchitect Жыл бұрын
Hey Steel. Probably traditional roto in 3d space would be your best bet. This is an easy workaround for mostly static masking.
