After all those years we are now able to import 3D objects, such as OBJ and GLB with textures!!
Before that was only able with plugins such as Video Copilot Element3D, but now this works native in after effects.
You can add a camera, lights and as many different 3d objects that will interact in 3D space.

After effects cs5 could import 3d obj from psd 3d, then you can edit, texture and more, later Adobe remove this feature when they add raytracing module, and never come back until now, since after 16 years, i hope today is better than that version...

This is what I have always wanted! However as of now, It looks as though it treats the 3d model as 1 solid object. Not able to select sub selections. For example the X-Wing you used in this tutorial you could not select the wings and animated them opening. I hope they work on being able to do that!

"GLB is a binary container format of glTF. It bundles all the textures and mesh data into a single file." For this reason, with this format you cannot modify any aspect of the model, be it its textures or type of shaders. As well as the environment image. Although it is something practical for many cases, the ideal would have been that it could also support files like Alembic, which are the industry standard. With the possibility of using shaders. a 3DElement but modern. If the client asks for something to have less or more reflection it won't work, unless you go to the source file and fix it in another program.

If anybody is trying this and is a complete beginner to 3D in AE like me, and as a result, getting greyish featureless models you still need to apply textures and lights and the way I did it was to import my model into a weird little Adobe program called Adobe Substance (yes, really) Stager. Then export the entire scene as a GLFT (or something like that) model. So, any light or reflection or texture you create is now exported and bundled into the model. Stager does 3d text as well, so having this recognised within AE is also really handy. Stager is subscription I believe. The ideal option would have been to import live video into stager (which isn't possible) as Stager is quite a nice little interface for 3D. I don't know what the long term strategy with 3d is for AE, but diving into it, there is also a cinema 4d lite option which is worth investigating.

Hey! Thanks for the feedback! So the plan at the moment is, that you can import more file formats natively with the next release of After Effects! But what you could do now: SImply use blender! It is free! You can import every file format here! Then simply export as gltf! And that will work in After Effects! Or you simply start with a gltf! ;)

Hey, yes you need to install the beta! And it does not support ray tracing at the moment! I think there is some very good stuff in E3D that will not be in AE, like the particle generator... so I think you will have to decide! But for many stuff it is better than E3D! Tutorial is on its way!! ;)

Love the tutorial!! This is an amazing new feature. Question about exporting.. So I've imported a GLB, added some movements, lights and cameras. I've been working in mercury 3D because that's what it prompted me to do. When I go to export, the scene is blank and doesn't show my GLB. When I look at the Classic 3D render, my 3D object is gone. Any settings that I am missing?

As cool as this is, I think it will be mostly reserved for experienced AE users. Learning 3D without a full 3D workspace may be pretty difficult for beginners. Still a super exciting addition though! RIP Element 3D

You don’t necessarily need to “learn 3d” to benefit from this. For example I create marketing videos for tech companies. Many of these just need a pre-built model of a phone or a laptop or whatever added to a comp with some text etc - this will now be super simple. Just add the model to a comp, key frame position, scale and rotation in 3D space - job done. Clearly there’s more to learn for more advanced content but not every AE artist needs that.

Haha... thank you... for the moment element offers youmore features, but it doesn't not interact with the ae3d space... so I think learning both makes still most sense!!

when importing my blender 3d asset to after effect, but when i do export in obj/glb/gltf file i have a white wall at the back and down of my asset, on top on that my asset is full white, with no textures and colors on, and yes i use the last version of AE

I tried to add the model to the beta version, but it just black screen showing. I tried different formats; fbx, obj, gltx and glb, but nothing works. Can I please get some help? Thank you!

Hey! I always use glb or gltf files and they seem to work best. Could be that your file is pretty big and takes a while to load and cache

Don't really know why you should have trapcode...?? Have you tried using a glb file??
