3d Modeling Tutorial | Schoen's Batwing Surface | 3dsMax

In this tutorial I will show a very simple and effective technique to model a triply periodic minimal surface, known as Schoen's Batwing, for 3d printing and design. Schoen's Batwing surface gets its name due to its fundamental region, which resembles a bat wing. Alan Schoen is best known for discovering a minimal surface that he named the gyroid.

The shapes are usually based on actual geometric or mathematical surfaces. This one, for example, is a minimal surface discovered by the scientist Alan Schoen, who also known to have discovered the Gyroid. Both the Batwing and the Gyroid surfaces are very similar. Like the Gyroid, the Batwing can be duplicated in a certain pattern to create larger and more complex versions of itself.
