In this video I talk about 3D Platformers, specifically in the triple A market. I dont think they're ever gonna make a return. The last big Triple A attempt at a 3D Platformer was Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time and it didn't exactly sell amazingly well soooo...

So true. We don't need Triple A platformers if we keep getting bangers like Celeste and A Hat In Time to keep the genre alive That being said, platforming, especially in the 3D aspect, has quietly went down as more of a side-genre than something devs have been looking to make use of for motives other than a nod at a nostalgic era.

I think the problem with 3D platformers is that nowadays considereing how expensive games are getting people only seems to enjoy masive arpgs or sandbox games to justify the value, platformers are very simple in comparison. Not to mention that the target demographic of those games (kids usualy) are more onto mobile games, heck they even find piggy from roblox more iconic than Crash.

They could go for a 3D metroidvania approach, that grants you platforming, a world to explore, and those elements for crafting(don't know if it helps for the rpg feel) could be dropped here and there. Point is this genre doesn't even seem conceivable, the only ones that made it are Control and that SW game I keep forgetting how it's called.

I mean most 3d platformers don't have triple a prices. They're usually priced quite reasonabley, often half or a third of the price of a regular game, even then there's gamepass or ps premium that might help people start off. Also I get that people like to tie an age to platformers because the target audience is often kids but realistically anyone can play and have fun with them.

@@il-ma.le.There are games like that. There's a hidden gem called a knights quest that has a real charm to it, nice world to explore with powers that alllw you to explore further, almost zelda like but the combat is kinda frustrating if you can get past that. There's also Bluefire which is pretty decent 3d metroidvania platformer game.

They don't do that many FPSs anymore, I just searched for the biggest games launched in 2023 and I got a list of 24 games: RE4, Dead Space, Like a Dragon: Ishin, Diablo IV, Starfield, Street Fighter 6, FF16, Super Mario Wonder, Dead Island 2, Dredge, Fire Emblem: Engage, Forspoken, Horizon Call of the Mountain, Lies of P, Atomic Heart, Company of Heroes 3, Darkest Dungeon 2, Hogwarts Legacy, Wo Long, Meet Your Maker, Minecraft Legends, Persona 3 Portable, Pikmin 4. From those, only 2 are FPSs(Atomic Heart and Meet Your Maker), but you can increase the count to 4 if you include Starfield and Dead Island 2 (those are RPGs, but you can shoot in first person as well), or you can incrase the count to 6 by including third person shooters (like RE4 and Dead Space). Anyway, most of the big games are not FPSs.

I wouldn't say 3d platformers are dead, they just dont have the same push as they did during the 5th and 6th gen of consoles Out of all the bigger series the only ones id say get consistent releases are mario, sonic, kirby and maybe crash. The reason I said maybe for crash is because toys for bob went indie and are currently making a parnetship with microsoft so it might be awhile before we see a new crash game again and Spyro is pretty much a crash character atp as its been 6 years since reignited and all they've done with spyro is put him in the newer crash games. Ratchet and LBP are pretty much the only playstation platformers thats are still around as ND and sucker punch have no intentions of bringing back Jak or Sly at all. Rayman is pretty much dead since there hasnt been a new (non mobile) game in over a decade and hes only ever made appearances in other things like that neflix show and mario + rabbids. Phil Spencer says he hears banjo fams but i dont believe him on that one lmao. Also, both Pac-Man World and Pyschonaughts have made combacks recently with repac and psychonaughts 2. Even Spongebob games have made a comeback Plus we've got plenty of indie games too that come out in between all the bigger budget games.

You forgot to mention Psychonauts 2, that game is amazing. Maybe the Sponge Bob's ones are also worth mentioning, or Sackboy A Big Adventure, or Kirby and the Forgotten Land Imho 3D Platformers already made the come back, a genre doesn't need to saturate the AAA market in order to be considered active. ...also, even when in the 5th and 6th generations of consoles many of the biggest games were 3D plataformers, they wouldn't be AAA by today's standards. The first Crash Bandicoot had a budget of 1.7 million(for development, the marketing and manufacturing budget probably was higher), that would be an indie by today's standards. The first Psychonauts had a budget of 11.5 millions, much higher but still far below what would be a AAA today. So, in order to evaluate if there was a comeback or not, we should at least consider AA games and not just AAA; and I have the feeling that recently indie 3D platformers are reaching the quality of good 3D platformers from 5th or 6th gen.

The reason why they dont make a comeback is cause nowadays we mostly get retro throwbacks instead of an evolution of the old PS2 story driven platformers like Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper or Jak and Daxter which were basically the last platformers(in my opinion) which really tried to revolutionize the genre with new content.

Sorry, some of what was stated here is iffy. Just because a big company isn't making one, doesn't mean anything. Nintendo is still the company with broadest of appeals as they are still making platformers because most of what they do beats what the AAA companies are working on. This is why indies are filling up the slack and dominating the genre that most of other companies left behind, one could make a AAA and lose millions in lost sales and be disregarded while an Indie can gain more. Also, say what you will about Insomniac, at least they're not Naughty Dog, we'll all take that Marvel "slop" (not a good critique BTW) over whatever the hell they're making over there.

Genuinely painful take about Crash post-C3, best stay forgotten, literally can't understand it. All 3 console racing games were fun bangers, the first 2 GameBoy games were bangers, WoC was underwhelming but still OK, Twinsanity is literally the favorite game of half the fanbase, like fr wtf are you even talking about ☠️😭?! Even Bash, that I personally don't like at all, has a positive reputation with many fans. What, we're supposed to say "Crash bad post-C3 lol haha" because Crash Purple on the GBA was bad? Because the Titans games, which were a separate universe trying something new mind you, weren't everyone's cup of tea? Crash Bandicoot never got bad, Crash "4" didn't have to retcon anything, the fact that they did is insulting to longtime fans, at least it should be. And Sonic has been consistently present in the 3D platforming scene and performing really well for most of its presence, in the last 3 years the IP is arguably (objectively if we're talking statistically) at its peak, Sonic performed reputation necromancy and is now back on track. The bad stigma 06 had for so many years is bafflingly unwarranted if you ask me. I'm happy 06 is getting more love than ever and nowadays genuinely has more fans than haters, it's my second favorite mainline game behind Unleashed, it always deserved the love, but anyway that's a conversation for another day anyway. I think Sonic's comeback will be, or at least should be, the blueprint for other franchise's rising back up, they're constantly doing things with Sonic everywhere and doing most things right The genre overall is on an undoubted decline tho, I'm definitely not denying that, I agree with you. More legacy IPs need to return with proper outings and not soft-reboots and dumn revisions ala Crash 4. We need a proper Spyro 7, a proper Sly Cooper 5, a proper Jak & Daxter 4, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart I thought had the mid-est of mid stories but I enjoyed the levels and combat and would love to see another one soon (maybe a bit more Deadlocked inspired tho lol, liked the darker vibes), Psychonauts 2 was a great return and I want a third one, Sonic and Mario need to continue killing it with bangers like Wonder and Frontiers. Indie okatformers I find very hit or miss but I want to see how they'll improve. The frequency of 3D platforming games is significantly smaller now and so is their grasp on the industry but in terms of quality they're not bad at all in my opinion. We just need some heavy hitters to come back and a healthier/smaller gap between releases and we'll be Gucci.🤙

I'm pretty sure they already made their comeback. The genre absolutely died off in the late 2000s. The PS3 and 360 generation only really had a few kids lisenced 3D platformers like Toy Story 3. But the comeback began around 2017 when small indie teams, presumably devs who grew up with them, began making them. It was slow at first, but after the Crash Trilogy proved the genre is still popular, more and more followed, with increasingly bigger budgets. There had to be close to 100 of them available on PS4. Sony must have took note because the PS5 launched in 2020 with two big budgets first party 3D platformers available on day one; Sackboy and Astro's Playroom, with a third one, Ratchet & Clank following a few months later. I know it happened after this video was released, but Astrobot just released, a proper classic style 3D Platformer Collectathon, and it's literally the highest rated game of the year and is selling extremely well. I don't know about the other platforms, but I think Nintendo still has a lot too, and the Mario ones are extremely successful.

Just because they cannot pump out a new game every year does not mean they are dead, in fact taking time to make the games and not making too many will keep Spyro alive longer. Honestly Yukalale never deserved the hate, the game is easily on the higher end of 3d platformers. The only people that criticised it were afraid of having big levels because it's overwhelming for them but the big scope made it better in my opinion. The game to me was like a bite sized Mario odysey, everything was a curiosity and added variety to the game. Every platformer at least gets one mini game a bit off but even so the minekart was really not that bad.

Good video! The gaming landscape has changed, so genres that once saturated the market are taking a backseat to other genres. I mean, back in the '90s, beat-em-ups were all the rage, but quietly slowed down as the decade came to a close. However, we did get a number of indie beat-em-ups over the the past couple decades, so it doesn't mean the genre is gone completely. I think the same rings true for 3D platformers. Honestly, A Hat in Time, Crash N. Sane Trilogy, Spyro Reignited, Pac-Man World Re-Pac, Crash 4, and Super Mario Odyssey have scratched my 3D platformer itch over the past several years. There are also plenty of other indie and remasters of traditional 3D platformers, so the genre isn't going anywhere.

Just so you know... the 3 last Tomb Raider games are also platformers (and Action-adventure + Puzzle) . Ratchet & Clank (ported to steam via playstion) is also a platformer. The Gunk also a platformer from 2022.. Then we have The Mobius Machine, DROS, SCARF, Biped 2, Elon and the Divine Proof, Shady Knight, TRINE 5 and SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS... So the genre is hardly dead, dying or NOT making a comeback.. Will it be a super-popular genre? No, never will (or has been) but they are still made and enjoyed.

It’s quality over quantity, just because we are getting a certain number of triple A 3D platformers every now and then that doesn’t mean the genre is dead, Crash and Spyro aren’t going anywhere, Toy for Bob are already working on Spyro 4 as of now (they haven’t announced it but hinted at it more than once) and we already have Crash Team Rumble (the support for it has officially ended but they just dropped a lot of content for the last batch and now is the perfect time for them to start working on another project, Spyro 4 and Crash 5 are a big possibility for the future), Aspyr released a remastered version of the first 3 classic Tomb Raider games (which are action puzzle solving platformers) not long ago and the games are selling like hot cakes, aand if we ever get Metroid Prime 4 soon (we don’t know how soon though) it is possible that it would gather the success that Metroid Dread and Metroid Prime 1 had (genre for these is a metroidvania action platformers)…what I’m saying is that the genre isn’t going anywhere and definitely not dead

It’s a shame. As of 2022, the only triple A series that has been getting 3D Platformers lately are Mario and Sonic. We did get Penny’s Big Breakaway, which is the most recent 3D Platformer to date, but that’s not enough. All I see nowadays that is flooding the market is these big, open world adventure games with RPG elements, high def graphics that destroys your PC, and have 80 hour long campaigns that also comes bundled with a crap ton of DLCs and day 1 patches.

I think it's important for us to realize that the industry is MUCH bigger than just what AAA offers. A game doesn't need to be an international phenomenon or sell a bajillion copies to be good, successful or relevant, as the last minute of this video happily proves. If you embrace the rest of the non-AAA side of the industry, you will come out thoroughly satisfied, not just if you like 3D Platformers, but many other niche genres as well. I think this is a problem for all platformers in general that aren't Mario and Sonic. Those two are so entrenched in gaming culture that even if anything else comes out and is proclaimed the "greatest 2D or 3D platformer ever" then it's difficult for there to be too much of an audience because there is now a whole audience who never grew up with platformers or they were considered "kiddy" games and therefore passed over no matter how good they are. And yeah especially in the indie space some end up going under the radar. Sometimes for reasons that make sense like Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair being a 2D spin off of a derided game where the new game was far better than the old one, but sometimes it is just because the genre is too niche now or the games are trying to evoke the style of Mario or Sonic. Games like Freedom planet, Spark the Electric Jester, Rollin Rascal and even Penny's Big Breakaway get grinded down to "Sonic but better" in online discussion which makes it difficult for them to stand out no matter how good they might actually be. The only platformer to buck this trend is Pizza Tower which released to huge critical acclaim and is the one time a platformer was universally recognised for being really good.

3D Platformers are difficult to get right. It's hard to make platformers fun, challenging, and creative. The core gameplay is simply to run and jump. Super Mario is definitely the king of 3D platformers and there is a reason they wait extensive times to release a new one.

A platformer (It Takes Two, published by EA) literally won game of the year in 2021. Platformers have seemingly declined only because the amount of ways to innovate aren't as abundant as it used to be. If an avenue to innovate appears they will pursue it. The key is innovation, if you want a renewed interest in platformers, you need to get rid the perception that platformers are retro. You are contributing to that perception by insinuating the genre peaked long ago, so are many of the indie platformers that explicitly invoke the classic games. Frankly, I don't think gameplay that looks like it could've been on the N64 should be seen as the future of the genre. It seems disingenuous to be concerned about the future of the genre when all you do is look at the past.
