Ok, I'll say it - Not feeling it. The amount of time, filament, and assembly for the "raw" look, just isn't worth it. You'd have to then sand and paint to have something decent looking. Plexi/acrylic is also pricey and a PITA to cut to size. This is a nice shelf if you've got a niche set of pieces to display in a specifically sized area, but not if you're a big time collector. These files or a similar remix will likely be on thingiverse in the near future. Kudos the 6 person team that's making $300k+ emailing STL files though! 😁
@IlanPerez
@IlanPerez Жыл бұрын
i agree. While the idea is great. The stretch goals are also great. At the end of the day a 330x330 without anything added will cost just in filament about $45AUD. Probably like $30USD. then you need to add in all the extra parts, magnets etc. I had the same problem with the table. Files were cheap enough but to print a table takes like 2 weeks and about $300+ in filament.
@UncleJessy

Maybe you can help me understand then - Why are there kickstarters for 3D designs? My understanding is that you use the funds from kickstarted to move the idea or product to the next stage but I have to imagine these files already exists so what's the point of waiting extended periods of time for them? Is it just easier to gain virality or market?

They fully explained not only every step they have taken, why things are the way they are, and just about every other aspect of this program. if your confused at all about any aspect of the program, and need explaining, I'd suggest going to the kickstarter page, and reading all the provided information that fully explains everything.

KS / Marketing is a large part of it but also the idea that you don’t have to spend all of your time developing the product until you see there is enough interest in it. Wouldn’t be worth their time or $ if they spent months developing the files / 30+ accessory sets only for it to make $20. At least that’s my thinking from a business side of things

This was an interesting Kickstarter, but I think there are a few issues. While their previous Kickstarter was a physical product, they still haven't delivered on it and haven't even posted up their pledge manager. I actually would rather back the file to be able to use with a CNC machine. These STL files are interesting and cool, but they take a lot of filament and look really bulky compared to what actually fits in them. Last issue, Kickstarter is horrible at protecting customers. It is also concerning that they started another Kickstarter before even fulfilling the last one. EDIT: It appears my info was wrong, I confused them with another company that has a very similar design.

I agree. Especially if you're going for the larger sizes, you're tying up your printer for goodness-knows how long for something you can buy in a store for the same or cheaper cost. Makes very little sense to me aside from the coolness factor. And I don't think these are particularly cool!
@thatvanillagorilla

Yup. Not to mention the time and effort to clean seams and so on. Way too much trouble. Then what is the cost of the acrylic panels and shelves. There is way more cost than filament. I buy the Welloux stackable display cases but I do only display my painted mini's. They already have lighting as well. I have a full wall display of them 4ft tall wall mounted along an 8 ft wall.

Jessy, if you must chose between FDM and resin what do you chose? It seems to me that you are also getting tired of resin printing, right? For me that has been the case. I have both types of printers and the resin printer is superior in everything, speed, resolution, etc. But, and a BIG but, it's such a mess with all the smell, post processing and stuff. FDM printing is more enjoyable even though it's not as good quality or as fast because you don't have to deal with all the mess. Wouldn't you agree?

Interesting but honestly I'd rather just buy a shelf off of marketplace for 20 bucks

So we are using plastic now instead of wood as contruction material ....great I rather would prefer al aluminum one or wood, cheaper and easier and also modular. Honestly the idea itself is fine but printing load bearing parts is simply dumb. You can make a wood box and also attach some pieces on top of it to make it look the same.

These Kickstarter things for digital files seems completely scummy to me. I personally hate that people are now just using Kickstarter to be a preorder platform and for advertising not how it’s intended to be used. Edit: don’t get me wrong, the files are amazing and I would love to have them but I am not going to support that, unfortunately.

$300k to send an email to a mailing list of donors. Ridiculous. Stuff like this just makes me feel better about releasing the files for anything I design for free.

@@mizz1414 I have no desire to make money on anything I design. It’s all for the community. Not everything needs to be driven by potential profit.
