In this video, I show you how to model a 3D printable textured rolling pin that can be used on modeling clay, green stuff or other sculpting putties, and even on XPS foam! The process is incredibly simple and doesn't require any modeling experience. The hardest part is choosing the texture that you want to use on your rolling pin! Check out the video and then give it a try!
FREE STL! Print the roller and give it a try!

Everytime i want to print somthing. i first search for files to look for options, every time i end up deciding to make something myself because i can't find what i want or i don't like the way it's already made, i end up on a blender tutorial, and its totally worth it. I learned a lot more than i thought i would with this tutorial, i didn't knew how to setup a vertex group before. Thanks a lot man!

Yes, as an experienced blender user... I found I had the same problem as others did with it applying the displace modifier to the inner cylinder as well as the outer one even though I made my vertex group and applied it. You must apply the solidify modifier (by clicking the little down arrow icon next to the modifier and selecting apply).. THEN make the vertex group and add displace...etc. Took me a minute to figure out that's what I was doing wrong. Thx for the tut!.

I then watch another video on how to group it by ctrl L, when i then apply the rest of the method if did not work, it is so frustrating, because I have been doing it for hourssssssssssssssss, and this is my first time using blender, maybe a few key points that are missing in the video.

I'm after a granite stone block texture so I can make slips that can be printed, painted and applied to a wall to give the effect of real stone like you would find in say a old castle. I get involved with sfx with a local film school that runs classes for young people in the holidays and this is the only way I can see to create something like this. Trying to build a relatively cheap set to create a stone arched doorway. Thanks

Hiho! Thanks for the hints! I needed a few hours to find my fault why i also could not exclude the inner side from being textured. In the current 3.3 Blender i found the APLLY option for the solidify modifier behind the camera symbol in a dropdown menue. After applying this i could proceed as described. It is a pity that the UIs from Blender and zBrush make it so difficult to use them. Years ago i had a program called Cubify Sculpt, where you simply said wrap that picture along a path and voila it was wrapped. Only issue was that it could not doe it seamless and there was always a few milimeter seam.

In the modifier panel you can change how the modifier appears while modeling and how it will render. You can keep the view setting lower so your computer can work faster but keep the render setting higher so that the final file still comes out smooth.

Anyone having issues with a jagged texture after doing the displacement modifier, try going back to your texture tab and increasing the filter size under image sampling. It will smooth out the transitions both along the surface to mitigate the pixel-like effect, as well as give a smoother vertical transition for the rolled material making cobblestones and stuff like that look a little more natural.

the texture in the roller is really jagged in your video, is there a way to smooth that out? Also what revision of blender is that? im running 2.82 so wondering if the new build will have settings in the same places. Have you tried this process using a photo of say bricks or concrete? how would i prepare a photo to be used as a texture?
@CraftLogic
@CraftLogic 4 жыл бұрын
The more subdivisions you use and the higher you set the Subdivision surface modifier, the smoother the roller will become but it will also tax your computer quite hard. The rough edges on each stone are not evident in the actual print or on the clay when you use it. I will have to go back and check my Blender version but I haven’t updated it in several months since I originally downloaded 2.8. I should probably update for future videos. The biggest consideration for preparing the photo is ensuring that it is grey scale. Just know that black pixels displace one way and white pixels the other, shades of grey in between. You can vary the shade of your pattern as demonstrated near the end of the video but be careful with images that have larger variation in shades between individual pixels. If you have lots of speckling of different shades, you will get spikes in the model that make the texture difficult to work with. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!

*That's a great tutorial! My roll pins came out perfect!* But... may I ask you for another tip? How do I do it on a different meshes like a cube or a plane? I almost achieved what I wanted, but I keep struggling with the "UV editing" step. Everything goes well when I do cylinder, but I can't seem to scale the texture when it comes to a cube/plane shapes. Maybe I'm doing the subdivide thing wrong? Or I should somehow prepare the new object before I do things with it? Once again, thanks for the tutorial. It was so simple, yet such a big step forward. You're the best :)
@CraftLogic
@CraftLogic 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video! You should be able to follow a similar process with a cube. I’m not sure why it isn’t working out. You should be able to scale the texture using the same steps outlined in the video. I actually used the same process on a cube to make a texture stamp. You just need to subdivide the mesh so there is enough geometry to accept the detail. After UV unwrapping, you should still be able to adjust the UVs to scale and reposition the texture.

Great tutorial the file cobblestone link you gave is over 100mb in size all 3d printing uploads have a maximum 100mb no more and the size dimensions were off had to work the xyz dimensions to mm as well as the camera and set to default size so what you see is how large the item actually is or you can adjust as long as it doesn't go over ten inches which I think is the maximum a 3d printer can create, so the object is automatically configured for 3d printing , also the density and detail of the original download file because of the UV map image displacement raised the price at CraftCloud to $50.00 and $19.00 shipping I am going to try to reduce the vertice faces to 2/3 the original face count to see if it makes a better price.

I found this video from your Thingiverse pages. In your V2 roller pack you mention you hollowed them out so a wooden dowel can be put inside, but you seem to use them hollow in this video. Is that an optional step? If printing hollow with PLA, what infill would you recommend so that it's not too brittle? Thank you for the awesome files!
@CraftLogic
@CraftLogic 4 жыл бұрын
Matt Snell I have used them with a dowel but have found I prefer to just roll them by hand. I mostly use a hollow cylinder to save on material when printing. When I printed my roller on my FDM printer, I believe I used 20% I fill for the walls of the cylinder. However, if I remember correctly, the walls were thin enough that it wouldn’t make much of a difference if you just did 100%. If you are using the rollers on clay or something similar, which I highly recommend, you really don’t need much pressure and you won’t have to worry about breaking anything. If you use them on XPS, you need a bit more pressure but I haven’t been concerned with breaking anything.

Please excuse this very ignorant question and please understand I know nothing about 3D printing but before I even consider doing more investigating I’m very curious typically patterned rollers are very small - can the 3D printer make a decent size or close to a normal size patterned rolling brush comparable to what a normal roller for painting walls would be? I know it sounds like a dumb question but I have seen very limited options when it comes to buying, unlike clay rollers with unlimited minimalist options. So Im now considering making my own if it’s doable.

Be sure to Apply the solidify modifier before you do that stuff. I haven’t used the newest version of blender but I have been told that the apply button isn’t displayed the same way. I can't figure out how you are selecting only the outside of the cylinder to create the vertex group. Is it a keyboard shortcut?? I either get the outside and inside or just the front face of the cylinder. I'm new to Blender.
@CraftLogic
@CraftLogic 4 жыл бұрын
I recommend doing that step in solid view rather than wireframe. However, if you are in solid view, you won’t be able to select vertices on the backside of the object. If you select the front side then rotate the model, you can hold shift while you continue selecting more vertices until you’ve selected them all. On Mac you can also use Option + click to select an entire loop at once. Not sure on windows but it might me Alt + click. You also don’t need all of them selected at once to add to the group. You can always add or remove more later. Hope that helps!

Is there a method to have a pattern that will match stone edges if I need a wider length than the roller itself?
@CraftLogic
@CraftLogic 3 жыл бұрын
You could try working with a tileable texture image. Thinking about it from the practical application perspective, it will be difficult to do in practice without some degree of manual cleanup of the join. You could try making an expandable roller by attaching two together with a pattern that continues across them. That would allow you to make a roller bigger than can fit on a printer, though it might bring challenges of its own.

Depending on what you mostly want to print, I personally recommend the Creality Ender 3 for an FDM printer which is good for larger prints. If you want smaller, high detail prints, I personally enjoy the Elegoo Mars. They can both be found in the essentials kit that is linked in the description of the video!

I am having a lot of difficulty creating the vertices group. It looks like I am selecting only the outside of the cylinder when making the vertex group, however when I add the pattern and then select the group it applies to both the inner and outer vertices and removes the pattern. I notice when you create the group you have 3 sets of dots across the thickness however I only get 1 set on the outer edge.

Interesting. I haven’t updated/used Blender in a while as I’ve been using other software. There is a difference between adding a modifier and applying it. Adding it will allow you to see the effect but it won’t actually do anything to your geometry until it is applied. So you can see the effect of Solidify but won’t see the extra vertices until it is applied. I’m not sure how you apply it if you don’t have the button in the video.

Oh my gosh, so many questions. Last problem...I figured it all out and then exported it. By using your dimensions of 750 cm my model came out approx 1/4 in tall and 2mm wide. I changed it to inches, and meters...and I'm getting an extremely small model. Can you think of anything that would make that happen? I'm new to blender and this is just crazy. If I were to convert 750 cm that equals 295 inches. That's like, no way....Again, Help! Thanks.
@CraftLogic
@CraftLogic 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you figured out the modeling part! As for the scaling issue, the scale in blender is pretty arbitrary. When you go to export as an STL, you can adjust the scaling there. You may need to adjust the scaling there by a multiple of 10 to increase the size. Once you figure out the multiple that works for you, it should work for future models also. That said, I haven’t used blender in a while and am unsure how recent updates may have affected things.
