Yeah, that would work well, I was kind of trying to replicate the original for the sake of it - plus these kinds of filters do filter very well, so there's that.
@Kabeerbaba27 жыл бұрын
This is amazing mate. Maybe for all the effort it was worth getting a cheap washable filter and using that as the filtration material?
@InitialDave7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It was kind of an exercise in making a replica of the standard one to show it could be done, but also, now I've done the design side of it, I can make myself more of them relatively simply, and given the car won't be a daily driver, I'll probably not get through them that quick. No reason at all why the same method wouldn't work for a foam or cotton "performance" filter, and I could alter my design to suit, but the cheapest panel filter I could find as a donor was about 3-4 times the price of my bargain standard type. Plus I'm not entirely convinced that there's a massive benefit to an aftermarket panel filter in the standard airbox, and I'll say this for the OEM-type elements, they do seem to filter dirt out very well. Come to think of it, if I looked around for a bigger donor filter, I could probably make two Daihatsu ones out of it!

Nice, but I'd be worried about a 3d print part in a hot engine bay. Doesn't the process work by melting the plastic to squirt it out the nozzle? What temperatures are we talking about for both?
@InitialDave5 жыл бұрын
PLA prints at a little under 200 degrees C, but you're quite right, it softens and warps easily in engine bay temperatures - not so much of an issue here, as the through flow of air keeps it cool enough, and it seems to holds its shape fine in the housing. I've run it for hours at a time without it being noticeably affected.

should've 3D printed an adapter fitting for the air box to the slightly larger filter, so that way instead of having to 3D a print a new housing every time you change the air filter, you just buy the same air filter you got in this video instead, with the added benefit of more air flow to the small engine, and more filtration
@InitialDave6 жыл бұрын
I wanted to keep the original airbox.

How is the 3D plastic holding over time, and which type of filament did you use?
@InitialDave6 жыл бұрын
It's doing fine - this was made with PLA, which although it isn't very resistant to higher temperature, it's not really getting baked with heat from the engine, so not been a problem.

@BigTCars6 жыл бұрын
So, did you 3d print the new frame simply because you could? Was there another reason that your didn't simplify the project by cutting the core out of the old frame and replace it with the donor filtering material? Your solution, while clean looking, is cost prohibitive for most. Buying a 3d printer, spending time measuring and programming the pattern, and finally the material to troubleshoot the printing would mean that you have quite a bit invested in that filter. Makes getting a cone filter (or similar), a jdm filter, or a washable drop in filter much more reasonable. I think basically you have made a good case for not doing this to recreate parts. Please don't misunderstand, your execution of this filter is great, but you did all that work....for an air filter. PS I can get this filter in the USA (where this car was never sold) off of ebay for $7.99 (£5.75). I'm betting you spend than that in plastic.
@InitialDave6 жыл бұрын
Well, I didn't want a cone filter, and the aftermarket panel filter that you can get is pretty expensive, so combining that with a certain amount of sheer bloody-mindedness led me to make my own, to show it can be done as much as anything. As for taking into account the cost of the 3D printer, to my mind, it's no different to things like welders or air compressors or other tools. They might cost more than is justified for any single job, but you can then use them for all sorts of other things, and frankly it's an interesting toy to mess around with. With just cutting out the old material and replacing it, you'd have to be careful with your gluing so as not to leave and gaps that dust and dirt can get through - the originals have the filter material moulded into the plastic, so their "edge sealing" is very good in that respect.
@BigTCars6 жыл бұрын

Im afraid I probably can't make you one, but when I'm next in Japan, I'm going to try and order some to bring back to the UK, and I might be able to get you one, would be about 5 months from now. I'll put a note in my calendar to reply/message you nearer the time. It's still tricky in Japan, though, as its an older/rarer car over there, too. Amazon probably have them, but it's not something they'd ship internationally.

I think you'd be doing well to fit one that large in the available space! Though yes, you could swap out the entire airbox for one of similar size that has readily-available filters. I'm intending to pick up a supply of spare filters next time I'm in Japan, anyway.
@timothyearp6316 жыл бұрын
The biggest issue I see is the a/c line, then if you make the box to hold the filter at an angle the box can hold a larger filter in a smaller space. Don't limit yourself to just that Toyota filter and see if the parts store will let you find a filter that is closer to what you need but is still easy to find at any parts shop. New filters from Japan is a good option too.
@InitialDave6 жыл бұрын
The Cappuccino's filter is a similar size, so if I were going to use a different airbox, I'd probably go with that, but I figure if I just buy myself a big pack of them in Japan, it'll last me for years anyway.

You could, but the way the filters are constructed is that the filter material is moulded into the plastic, and you'd have to basically stick it to the inside, so it'd probably be getting close to the same amount of work.
