This is really cool, I also believe that polyjet may not print materials that suitable for climbing due to the mechanical properties. There's actually a company called ATHOS that has been developing 3D-printed shoes using MJF printing, which prints using polymer powder which may be a little better in terms of mechanical properties.

you gotta make sure they last as long as regular shoes and feel as good outside of fit, but climbing shoes feel like a great actual use of 3D printed shoes (a lot more than just regular street shoes)

On the stratasys page about the polyjet, which is the rubbery material used, there is no mentioning about wear resistance or strength. Chances are this material will not last long at all. However, given this is only for proof of concept, a specialized material has to be developed for making shoes.

Recently saw a similar type of project for vr with ladar scan of the face for a perfect fit on the face. Was wondering if it was possible for climbing shoes and this is absolutely spot on what i expected someone could do. Great project 500 is steep but also what it costs for such a specific varient of a shoe. Keep it up :)

i think printing the rubber is not the best solution.. you could just tailor the fabric to fit your foot perfectly and calculate the optimal rubber thickness, stiffness and position for your foot, mark it on the fabric and have it be a product that can be resoled. No need to print something that is tailored for you all the time, once should suffice, at least once every few years
@Jonathan_sin88

That’s a great idea too!!

also, there is a company called ATHOS that also experimented with 3d printing climbing shoes :) And if your friend is looking into bespoke climbing gear, one thing that may be interesting is a bespoke hangboard where you can archive that every finger is in a 90° angle. This would be very interesting and a nice contrast to only training on straight edges. It could resolve imbalance between fingers(like having pinkies that are extremely weak in a half crimp position, as they may only be used in a drag position..) This should also be very easy to calculate and plan using a 3d scan of the hand, and 3d printable.

Fit is 1/2 why you buy a shoe…without materials like xs edge rubber this show wouldn’t even compare to current models. Most shoes aren’t made with one piece of rubber either, and there’s a reason for that, giving it flex where needed and firmness to provide better edging. This shoe seems to be focused on fit, but not at all on anything else. Making a mold of your foot isn’t groundbreaking, having a 3d printing material that mimics climbing rubber? That would be sick. The hype around this seems to not understand why we spend money on shoes, or the fact that a majority of climbers are dirt bags who would never spend 500 $ on shoes. If there was a demand for this, we’d see more of them.
@testboga5991
@testboga5991 Жыл бұрын
This is guaranteed bullshit. While 3D printed shoes can offer excellent fit, that's not what's limiting climbing shoes. Material properties of the used rubber, fabric and leather are. And compared to those, the properties of resin are complete garbage. I print with such materials every day and know what I'm talking about. All of them suffer from low tensile strength, creep under constant load, particularly at body temperature, poor abrasion resistance, poor resistance against tearing once the surface has been compromised, poor resistance to chemicals and water. In addition, while manufacturers claim biocompatibility, I wouldn't want to have this stuff on my skin for long. These problems will also never change, because the need to deposit the material in place forbids using high performance materials that rely on specialized chemistry or internal structure. Try printing carbon fiber reinforced materials. None of the printable ones are even close to laminated ones, except those that basically print a laminate and have other restrictions.

I really like the idea of a perfect fitting shoe. Espacally because i need two diffentent sizes for my feet. But i also totaly agree with you. A good fit is just one of the many features that a shoe must have. Besides, a shoe that has the exact dimensions of the foot is not a perfect fit. After a few uses at the latest, the shape is stretched and the shoe is too big. There are reasons why we (almost all) buy shoes that are too small. A downscaling of the foot shape would not help here either, as the shoe is loaded differently at different positions.
