Porsche is designing super light pistons which are only possible by means of 3D printing. These light pistons will add a claimed 30 horsepower, but how can something a simple as a piston add that much mo' powah babeh? And why does it require 3D printing?

@Jack Russelle Lewis it doesn't. the main problem with ethanol is rioting the fuel lines. as long as these parts can be modified or replaced to with stand ethanol it would be fine. I have a e85 converted s3 and it has been running fine. just need the right mods.

I am an engineer and I confirm that. I basically spend my day splashing WD40 on bunch of duct tapes to make them move and adding more duct tapes when they move to stop them from moving.

@@Rambovits well but it's really hard to compete against electric, the efficiency is just so much bigger and likely getting even better. Biggest issue currently is mainly the battery and its production.

from what I understand, piston slap occurs only with forged pistons, which probably your car doesnt have

It's from 2017, in more recent videos I can recall him saying that specific part X was done 3D printing.

Think that was when the first patent was filed. Pistons have been around since at least 300 BC the Greeks were using them and a couple of Archimedes designs used Pistons also.

Best part is 3d printers can print different things, not like casts that with one mold you have one piston. One day you can be printing camshaft other day - header. It brings possibilities of crazy prorotypes (some open source) and printing parts not obtainable now

All I was thinking about at that point is how much fuel that took, and how many tonnes of CO2 were added to the balance sheet... Then again, it's probably standard procedure for engine manufacturers.

@@zJoriz If you compare it to the lifetime of a single car it's nothing. Better optimized parts will make cars more economical in the future wich will very rapidly rebalanced some tests.

I had a Yamaha VStar with factory forged pistons. It sounded like rod knock when it was cold idling for about 30 seconds. 2,000 miles on it. Yeah...

Its already done. Expensive machine and very expensive parts. Greatest gain is uniformity in the material.

I’m studying mechanical engineering, and my college has one of the direct metal laser sintering machines. They actually gave us mini pistons made from it at the end of one of my classes lol

I don't want to sound creepy, but the first time i 3D printed my first female anime figurine, i felt some thing that i cannot describe. It was way more detailed than i expected it would be. maybe that's what people feel when they ride the first train ever invented. Still hoping for household/person to be able to manufacture machines/robots by themselves a'la Ghost in the Shell. Imagine cybernetic salon would be just like hair salon in the future, everybody can open one. Oh i wanna add, i can now say "the future is here old man" to my pops lol

The process, completed is at room temperature or below the metal’s recrystallization temperature to form a metal into a desired shape or configuration

@@StopTeoriomSpiskowym Fortunately, the surplus can be reused. BMW, for example, uses additive manufacturing (3D printing) for various parts already, like cylinder head for the S58 engine. I'm sure there's increased costs involved with investment, research and development but the parts are available in consumer-ish products so it't can't be that expensive. I think it's the time consuming process that is the biggest hurdle for reaching cost effectiveness. Just, speculating.

@@themadmachinist8637 I know, I tried it but Autodesk's business model is prohibitive for the average amateur maker. In Europe the smallest license is like $600 / year. Switched to Freecad and not looking back. It took me like 2 months (evenings) to redesign my stuff from F360 to FC (There is a rather good topology optimization for FC as well).

It isnt going anywhere soon. Its going to be around for many more years. Electric vehicles are not the clean, renewable, or as green as people want you to believe. There are serious issues with the safety and toxicity of the materials used to make them.. also untill everyone switches to truly clean power generation then its just trading one polluter for another potentially worse poluter.

old f1 engines used to do about 20,000rpm. they rev lower these days because they can make power at lower revs thanks to the turbo. also, they only have a set number of engines to last a full season, so dont stress them like they used to. i think the regulations cap the rpm to 15,000, but this is rarely if ever reached
