That is so clean! Very nice printing. PLA+ wow. "I love to solder" That explains a lot! I hate it myself. There are a lot of mods on Thingiverse you can download to enhance things. Stuff like hiding a plug in port in one of the octogons, stuff for the speakers, those 2 buttons on the dome, there is mod to turn them into power and reset buttons, etc. I too went to the MIII drive, I finished my assembly of those a few months ago. Black undercoat: Yup. "Sanding the tops of the pie pieces at 45 to work:" Nice tip. "Split the power" Michael Baddeley mentioned that several times. Good call. Awesome job!

This is most excellent! Did you use entirely pla plus, was the base color for the body white, did that cause challenges in being able to see sanding marks vs black or grey? Im going to do this build have 3 printers rn and starting out too, i originally wasnt going to paint anything just going with blue/grey/white but now i might be second guessing that (or is it too rough looking without sanding/paint). Did you spray the body after it was together i assume? I've estimated i could probably print the entire structure day and night in about 8-12 days with my equipment (p1s, qidi 4 plus and neptune 4 max).
@KevinFlynn1967Ай бұрын
Thanks Marc! So believe or not R2 is mostly printed in PLA. I started using PLA+ after the price started to drop in 2019. Thats kinda of the reason I call this my Experiment. The base body color was printed in white. I didn't notice any issues sanding, only that there was a lot of it! I did spray the body after it was together. I used a cheap palm sander on most parts but you definitely have to be careful or you will burn through the plastic. I'm going to try a Chopper or Mouse Droid next. I still have the old (old, lol) CR10 but I am picking up a P1S soon. We have a Sovol SV8 at work and the print speeds now a days are insane compared to my printers from 5 years ago.
@markm75Ай бұрын
@@KevinFlynn1967 ah very nice ok, yeah good to know on the burn issue. I picked up a "foot sander" to hopefully making sanding easier on projects but i guess you have to watch out. I guess if the price difference is small between pla and pla plus, maybe ill still do pla. Any issues with your pla per say? is it white at its base i assume?
@KevinFlynn1967Ай бұрын
@@markm75 I haven't had any problems with printing most of this project in PLA, but now that better filaments are much easier to print, I would probably go with PLA+ at a minimum. If I remember right I did 30% infill and 4 walls min. on most parts. I tried to print most of the parts in the colors they would be but it's really not necessary. After sanding you should be priming before painting, and with the dome I did primer, gloss black and then the silver to make it look more like aluminum. I'm curious to start working on a Chopper build out of ABS. I think if any of the newer printers print ABS the way with the ease that I've heard I might go back and redo the legs in ABS but for now he's doing fine as is.
@markm75Ай бұрын
@@KevinFlynn1967 i thought about abs for my new big builds like this, i even had an exhaust arrangement ready to attach, but i can only make that work on 2 of the 3 printers. I thought with the bondo + primer filler method it might not be too bad with pla/pla+, who knows, yeah i've heard abs is easier. Chopper would be #2 on my list, actually i was thinking of doing the battle droid first and maybe just straight beige and no painting, then move onto r2.

I got part way through mine and essentially killed my printer. I've got the dome, the body (which is a bit wonky due to poor print quality) and one and a half legs I think. I'm currently trying to build my own printer which has a bigger build area to help with completing the build... but I might end up redoing a lot and I'm even debating learning metal casting and trying to cast some/most/all in aluminium. I also have a plan for making a miniature projector (and using laminar flow technique to create a portable "screen") for the Leia message... but the way I do things this is probably still a few years off. Love the finish you've got on yours... looking really great! Makes me want my printer up and running so I can get back to tinkering.

@zombiehunter11522 жыл бұрын
You’ll be looking around 20 to 25 rolls of filament give or take and $25 each roll, electrics you can get the padwan 360 system which would cost you around $500 , you can buy a lights kit for about $200 , then you have motors and other little bits and pieces.

Hi Kevin. Which kind of PLA+ did you use?
@KevinFlynn19672 жыл бұрын
I shouldve took better notes, lol. I used primarily Hatchbox regular PLA (basically why I call this an experiment), but for some tougher parts I used eSun PLA+ and Raise3D Premium. I had great luck with all three. The Hatchbox PLA is so nice for PLA printing and the Raise3D was my favorite. I did try a number of other filaments but I think it really depends on your settings how much time you are willing to tweet them.
