Cutting tool maker Kennametal used additive manufacturing to answer a machining challenge in electric vehicle (EV) production. The motor housing of an EV includes a large, precise bore for the motor’s stator. Machining this bore rapidly calls for a large-diameter tool - potentially too heavy for the machine tool intended to use it. Enter additive manufacturing! Kennametal engineers designed a large, lightweight boring tool made through laser powder bed fusion along with carbon fiber composite.

Seems like a great application for Generative Design, since the loads are known. I bet they could cut the weight further.

hmm the carbide cutting teeth are mounted with bolts on not silver soldered like most carbide tipped cutting tools. interesting

Well, like 90% of indexable cutters meant for production which enables the tips to be quickly changed when they wear out.

What type of industry are you talking about? If you talk about simple, small tools like cutting saws for example, yes, they are soldered. But in CNC machining pretty much all tools with carbide inserts have them screwed. Milling tools are expensive and are not single use and you want this inserts to be fast and easy to unscrew, rotate or replace and screw back in to continue working again. Especially if tool have 20, 30 or even more inserts. Time is money.
