I teach a small engine high school class that uses donated junk equipment. Most of the donations are out dated and in some cases parts aren't available anymore. I'm using a 3D printer to make all sorts of parts for students. In most cases, our parts only need to last about 30 minutes. If they last longer, then all the better. I'm using TPU to make a variety of carb and carb bowel gaskets. The big key is just what you said about another tool in the toolboxes. We can make a gasket faster and cheaper than seeing if we have a budget left, then trying to order parts, and finally hoping to get them in time. The 3D printed gaskets and parts are made quickly, teach kids design, and cover an enormous range of equipment, making our program more successful. I'm with you.

I appreciate your recognition of printing casting molds. Most people don't realize that printing opens doors other than just printing plastic parts; molds, cutting and bending jigs, and even negatives for ceramic molds for high-temperature metal casting are all possibilities for home manufacturing of various tools.

These type of real world test in my opinion are much more valuable than many "scientific" tests. Thank you for your videos on this. I've been thinking about using these as gaskets. (hence finding your channel) I've made a couple gaskets for the wife's wine type bottles that get put in the refrigerator and work wonderful. Keep up the great work and sorry about whatever happened. Yes that is something I have not even touched on but the uses around the house for TPU are endless. I made some lids for open cat food cans for my wife. Much better than the cheap ones bought at the store. They seal well and are easier to take off an on. I have used it for a bunch of little things like that. All the best!

@the_eddies I agree, I've also used it for these aluminum "solo cups" that we have, it works great, just have to remember to put a little vent hole if you're using it for anything hot and/or carbonated. Lol. And I've also used it for gaskets on some custom windshield brakes on my side by side. There's so many uses, we're just touching the surface.

Love the follow up thanks for doing this. I'll be using TPU in the future for throttle body gaskets since it gets pulled for valve adjustments in the hotrod often enough that the regular gaskets get brittle and fall apart!!

As an added data point, I printed thermostat gaskets for my boat out of tpu. I printed 2 (twin engined boat). It’s been over a year with no signs of leaks. I just replaced the thermostats and reused the same gaskets. They were perfect when I removed them and they’re still leak free.

I've found it useful and thought about its different uses, in my case I did a sim for a bearing on a rocking chair which gets a lot of use e.g weight load and rotational load. yea it'll never be as good as an original piece but if needed I just print another off. got a few niro RC cars which need gaskets which I might try.

TPU is extremely tough, it might be as good or better than the original. I would be curious how it holds up against constant use with variable loads. Another video maybe, lol.

Hello, the jar was not added to since the time it was sealed. I opened it once a few months ago for a few seconds just to check the parts, but other than that was never opened. I considered a frequent changing to fresh gas, oxidation factors, etc. but really do not have a way to control for those factors with any precision. The use in the gas tank is the best I can introducing environmental and normal use factors. Thanks!

On the engineerig side of things, TPU is a high performing material for a gasoline exposed gasket. TPU also has good oil resistance. So, these results do indeed follow the engineering and chemical reaistance charts. The largest complications are printability, UV stability, temperature resistance, and porosity. Great job proving this out in the real world!

Thanks! Even with all the data out there on TPU, I think there is also a lot of misinformation. That combined with the amount of filament manufacturers that do not provide enough information on their product's specifications made these tests necessary, at least in my head, lol.

I have recently wondered about this so it's great to see someone doing live tests. It would be amazing if they held up to higher temps because it seems that's one of it's main downfalls. Which would be my thoughts given it's glass temp being around 100c How ever it's great to know, as i own a lot of tpu, a few 3d printers and a few things with engines in them. Thanks for sharing. Good to know some more uses for TPU. One test I'm curious to find out is low temp performance. Typically the majority of plastic parts fail at -50C but many fail way before that. Too many ppl try to use structured cores instead of solid infill for structural parts and wonder why they fail... ROFL

You should look into some nylon based filaments. Polymaker and Taulman are two that I would recommend. Taulman has a lot more nylon offerings than Polymaker.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to share your experience with TPU after a year of use. I see you dont recommend it for applications where temp surpasses 90C. Although i would like to make some gaskets for the radiator of my car. Do you think there is a small chance of success?

You are going to be right at or just over the 90C, probably not going to last long. Once it reaches deformation temp it is going to stay deformed. I would not on my daily driver. On a test vehicle I was just having some fun playing with I might try it. There are better alternatives though like silcone gasket material or 3D printing a mold to form a silicone gasket.

thank you so much for these videos i am currently making my own gaskets for my motorcycles carb bowl and was wondering how it would hold in the long term and having a year of use with little deformationb or damage is a great sign. most gaskets come in a rebuild kit and i build a collection of rubber, printing the exact gasket in 5-10 minutes for insanly cheap is incredible for me.

That lawnmower valve cover! Is that Honda GXV 160engine? Last time I was trying to unstick a sticky valve, I had to use silicone...blah I hate this stuff, since the service (where it was just few hours before) used a ton of this and made everything smeared by it...

It is a Briggs but Honda would be about the same. The printed gasket makes it so easy to do valve adjustments. No cleaning and getting a new gasket every year.

How do you think this would work for an intake manifold gasket on a V8? It would have coolant which may reach 240-250 degrees F, up to 200 degree oil, and fuel to deal with.

If it is an engine to experiment on and you don't care if it blows up, go for it. At 240-250 I think it would get too soft and lose the ability to hold torque. Maybe with some stiffeners like a two part gasket. Still that heat is way over my personal rule of thumb temp of 90C. Best!

So, as I understand, I could safely use a TPU gasket as a seal for something way less demanding application: a gasket-frame mounted around a little LCD display to avoid rain/humidity passing into the case and damaging the electronics. Also the outdoor temperature range in winter/summer should not be a problem (let's say from -15 Celsius to +40 Celsius). I'm right? (My condolences for your loss.)

@@theeddies Eye catchiness could certainly have a lot to do with it, but I think there is a natural blind spot (for me personally) which is the left side second row of my feed. Not surprising that is exactly where yours was sitting too. I tend to look left to right across the top for newest vids, and I guess by the second row I'm plumb tuckered out visually lol - Better kick that cold!

I've been thinking about you, hoping the new job you had going was keeping you busy, but fearing what was. Sent a prayer your way every once in a while. It's been almost 50 years since my dad passed and I still miss him. Still hear his voice in my head, usually saying "get to work you lazy cull". Looks to me like your tests are a complete success, swelling and distortion of the gasket soaked in fuel would have been obvious after a couple of months, if you've ever tried rtv in a fuel system it fails faster than it takes to clean-up the mess. I wouldn't consider the valve cover gasket a failure, cork and fiber gaskets take a hard set after a short time and eventually leak. Neither are re-usable without some kind of sealer. I've started using silicon gaskets for the rockerbox covers on the airplane, they're re-usable several time, but even they fail after while. Look forward to more of your posts, it's good therapy.

@@theeddies Funny how the weather was well above normal below a certain line and well below normal just above that line. Florida was much warmer and drier than normal. Engine is working great, I can tell the difference, stronger and smoother, hardly wait to get back in the air again

My only comment is I would not consider the valve cover gasket a failure. Premade "rubber" gaskets do the same thing over time. I agree with a solid print being better, but consider the one you used as a good version, just not the best version you could make.

@@theeddies Thanks, and thank you for doing this post. I use an old commercial Honda mower that getting gaskets for is a pain. I pull the carb and clean it every year. Couldn't get a gasket in time last year and they are paper. I re-used it and it held up fine, but now I can go with something better. I appreciate the testing and the videos very much. I also work in industry and we've had some rubber seals deteriorate on some enclosures that are in harsh environments, and the manufacturers do not sell replacement seals/. So I'm going to give TPU a try in those applications.

Seems like geriatricide to me, not to be rude, though I have to be on the defense with advocacy of the concealed wireless assault weapons issues where many shy away from or completely ignore. Thankfully, with my work the "Havana Syndrome" and "Health Attacks" situation came out and with way more bs controversy than needed since prior generations of men wanted the tech to be know way back who knows when like at least the 50's and 60's when started rolling out and maybe earlier when looking at the not steam rolled Navy. They do this every single time and I would say around 98% of the things don't fail. 😅 I can't how big are pain in the ass people probably were

That sounds about right. I appreciate constructive criticism and I got a lot of that along the way as well. But yeah, there are a lot of people who never try because they believe something they read at some point in the past and never researched it farther or don't understand the point of doing it in the first place. It is ok though, because there were a lot of people that enjoyed it and many that were inspired to try some new things with the extra knowledge. Thanks for the comment!

@@theeddies yeah the big thing for me that I decided was that I would take what they say as useful, but because I had already created the part I would just run with the part until it fails. Often I think that they are correct about something, but that the severity of the problem isn't right. 😅 I do try to keep their criticisms in mind when it does fail though.

@@Dragondezznuts Yes, but the point of a gasket is to conform to uneven mating service and seal them. There are hard gaskets for certain situations but most will require at least some amount of flexibility to be effective.
