In this episode we'll discuss the HO Scale Amtrak Viewliner II Baggage Car, possible manufacturers, and start the process of 3D modeling and printing our own, in this case using Shapeways for the final print. Please visit our facebook page and take part in discussion below to help us gauge interest in a small run of these models.

I print G, O and HO scale. With the CR-10S as well as a newly purchased CR-10 MAX and A Artillery Sidewinder X1. I design and print in single pieces. Such as the cab, for a EMD GP-60 I am working on. I don't bother with trying to make the drive system or bogies. I buy used Loco's and gut them. There is a sanding process I use and with the larger G scale when I am done it looks like injection molded parts. Other options is print .4 to .8mm under to account for heavy primer coat and satin paint.

BTW Spend a week or two learning FreeCad or Fusion 360. My first build was a U35 Sentential locomotive. While not the greatest its one of my favorites shells. I used a walther drive system and Tsunami DCC. its a prototype one of one. Working on a G scale Seaboard Coastline #547 damn thing use to scare the hell out of me when I was very young.

Your best bet for a home printer to start is to get something smaller and chop your model in half. I've got an SW1500 printing in pieces on a FlashForge Finder I picked up for about $200. So far, as long as I don't get ambitious with rafts, it's doing okay.

Yes I’ve thought about that. But this long stainless steel cars with their smooth surface just don’t have any good place for a seam line to be hidden. I’ll just wait for bigger volumes to become less expensive and keep giving my money to China for now. Lol

Yeah that's an issue. At that point I'd be sanding the [expletive] out of them and using some putty to fill in the gap.

I am into fdm 3d printing, but Not into model railway. I highly suggest not getting to snapmaker, because sla printers (the one shapeways use), are just as cheap, if not cheaper than fdm printers. There are a lot of great videos on KZbin, if you want to check it Out. Cost will come down significantly compared to shapeways. P.S.: If you want to, I can print you a wagon on my Prusa MK2.5 (fdm), send you pictures of the result and Detail, and if you want to see it in person, I can send it to you, with you paying shipping from Germany to you

Here's hoping that Kato will also produce a variety of Viewliner's in HO scale now. Not just the Baggage but the Viewliner I's and the other variations of the Viewliner II's.

Greetings and Salutations, I model the Long Island Railroad both past and present, coming across HO scale GP38-2, F7A, and even an MP15AC is no big deal, but a DE30AC, and The LIRR current equipment in HO scale is virtually impossible and I'd pay top dollar for such models just as long as they are as close to prototype as possible, additionally the single level commuter coaches used by the LIRR from the early 80s to the late 90s are something I'd buy up with the quickness of I were to find someone with them. 3D Printing looks like a very interesting process as I too am very impatient with model manufacturers that seem to produce the same old stuff each year with no sense of variety.

If you want to make a coach in ho scale, just print in resin the front ends and the details like trucks and doors, for the side of the coach, use a lasercut machine and make the rest of the coach in styrene. It's waaay more cheaper that printing the entire car in shapeways.

I know this will keep the cost of we railers higher, HOWEVER, have you considered when you have a set of 3D Plans to market your design data, i.e. download or disc, to those of us already with 3D printers? By your sale of artestery you reduce your unit costs. And by our having an artisan drawn plan we all could benefit in our consists. Jim

Sounds like your suggesting making the geometry available for purchase either with a single user license to print for your own personal use or an unlimited license to print for sale, both of which are possibilities. Especially if I'm unable to get a printer of my own that is up to the task. I know some folks have printers at home in the $10-30k range that could probably print it.

Have any idea where I could find a Amtrak cab-coach HO scale? I cant find one anywhere and Kato told me they have no plans of building more because they were super slow sellers. I can find cab coaches in other road names so I guess I could repaint one on my own to make it work with my other Amtrak cars. Love the video, subscribed.

Hi 68Jaguar420G, I accidentally removed your comment when trying to reply to it. To paraphrase you said there is probably still interest in a kit as the kato models are not due out for another year. and you suggested a $60 price point which is close to what I was pricing out with Sunpe. When you add in trucks and overseas shipping I imagine $60 is about right. Decals and lighting would be on you guys. As far as RTR add another 50-100 depending on if electrical is desired. Should have a test print in a few days. All of the other Viewliner II cars are ready to print, just waiting to see how the bag turns out from them. You also asked about sleeper interiors which I have for the Viewliner II and I just broke it into two parts you are all welcome to have for your home printing. However it is an .obj as I don't have an exporter for stl. Please get in touch on Facebook or leave an email if you would like I will send you the two half files. Best Rob.

@@drewzdrew27 Yeah they are short. I printed one at 95% and it works, but it looks odd to me next to the other cars. I think I'm done with Shapeways tho, just too expensive. There are a couple of printers on the horizon that should be able to print them at high enough resolution to put Shapeways out of business.

@modeltrains1507

Hi Gerald, I really appreciate your enthusiasm. I'm about to print the final prototype in the high resolution Accura Extreme material to test it out. I wouldn't want to print you shells yet in that material since I haven't had a chance to see it myself or the changes I have made to the model since V2. Give me a couple weeks to get that prototype back. But I can tell you with Shapeways the cost is pretty ugly. With tax (yes they hit you with tax and a hefty processing fee!) they want $934.89 for three shells and underbodies. if you wanted to receive them in RTR finished state add another $100 per car for additional parts (trucks, couplers, screws, paint, truck detail, decals, etc.). Sadly almost all of the cost goes to Shapeways which is why I'm trying to find other options. That brings the total for three cars to $1,234.89. For the Fine Detail Plastic option that the prototypes in the video are produced at, the total for three cars would be $972.12. Alternatively I plan to list the first prototype on Ebay in the new couple of days if anyone is looking to get something in their hands quickly. For those wondering, the cost of a single finished baggage car at present is $415.27 for "extreme" and $327.68 for "Fine Detail", which is basically the car seen in the video. These are my preliminary estimates based on $100 covering labor and additional materials. That's the number that may fluctuate upward or downward depending on how things are going after a few cars get made. I really hope we can get these costs down because I can tell you it's tough on my wallet too right now! If anyone is DIY inclined you can save about $100 and order them directly from Shapways to clean, paint, and assemble on your own once I've approved the final prototype. Hope that helps!
