I think he actually sells them, similar to the way Ferrari sells a F1 car after it becomes somewhat (*) obsolete at the end of each F1 season...but you might be right. I do think Luke moves onto his next project pretty often, and there might only be so many old ones you can store before kicking them to the curb.

As a fellow train travelling Melbourne teenager of the 90's who knows a little too much about our train systems, the first thing I thought of when you pulled the wheels out was, are they broad-gage or standard-gage, if they are not broad-gage you'll only be travelling from platform one at Spencer St to Sydney oh and you'll need to bring a diesel loco with you. Love seeing Melbourne PT represented, thanks

these kinds of hobbies are the main reason 3D printing excited me so much. I always knew it would be widely adopted by people like Luke Towan and hobbyists of all kinds. Even cosplay hobbyists benefit greatly from 3D printing, and it doesn't take away any of the skill or labor or artistry that goes into making the plastic look like something that is real. It's just another useful tool that talented people have at their disposal to make even more amazing things than they could make before, and it doesn't cheapen their accomplishments. And the longer it takes for me to get a workshop setup for a 3D printer, the more affordable and advanced they become.

This is fantastic! It is indeed amazing what can be achieved with 3d printing these days. But I have to say the printing bit is only part of the process. The model you've produced here, and the skills used, are still beyond most railway modellers. The CAD stuff alone takes hours of research, measuring and tweaking, but it is a very rewarding process to see your work emerging in 3D!

Fantastic video Luke!! Great to see other people doing this as I've been experimenting with 3D printed British N Gauge locomotives and rolling stock with great results. I've been using Tomytech TM series chassis bought from Plaza Japan, but I'm about to have a go at designing my own mechanism to get the correct wheelbase, which can be printed and built by anyone. These kids of models may not always have the same features and fidelity as those from major model train manufacturers like Bachmann etc, but they give modellers who enjoy a challenge a much more affordable way to enter railway modelling using their own printers. It's something I'd really like to expand on as part of our range.

I lived in Melbourne for thirteen years (originally from Perth, now back living in Perth) and I can't count the amount of times I rode on one of those Comeng trains. The Connex logo is a fun touch, they were famous for being a terrible operator and lost their contract. Moaning about them was the favourite pastime of ever Melbournian. All your dioramas are like little tributes to life in Australia.
@PJRayment
@PJRayment 5 ай бұрын
"...they were famous for being a terrible operator and lost their contract." Many people unfairly denigrated them, but for the first few years they met their (highly-set) performance targets about every second month, doing better than M>Train which hardly ever met them. Connex were so bad that when M>Train pulled out, the government asked Connex to take over the entire operation! Perhaps they weren't that bad after all? They lost their contract because the contract was up for re-tender every few years, and they were outbid by another company.

Great video, i would recommend cutting something like the train in half and print. The taller the 3d print is the more significant the print time is with resin printers due to more layers. Basically if we were to print a tower it would print far faster laid down vs standing up straight.

I've been experimenting with designing and printing my own N scale streetcars and BART trains from scratch. I've gotten some hilarious outcomes where only the window frames and supports print out OK. Very cool creation!!! You did make me giggle when you said, "average hobbyist like us...", I would consider your skills well beyond 'average'. My main geekage is scale 1/10 and 1/14 scale rock crawlers, semi trucks and construction equipment. I use my FDM printers mainly for making support pieces that are hidden so there is little finish work that needs to be done. I have been looking at resin printers for printing more detailed parts that do not need as much work to finish; however, I lack a space to set it up where I can have adequate ventilation. If I did take the leap back into HO scale, I would likely get a resin printer for custom creations.
