Here in 2020, I bought this Printer and after just putting it together, setting it up and using it the Sample worked just great one of the greatest prints I have seen. I love this little thing I use it to crank out smaller parts that way I can task my other printer for bigger things. Menu has been updated too

I love my Select Mini! I use Blue tape and a "spritz" of Tressme hairspray for bed adhesion. Have had many great prints and of course a few failures but all-in-all it is a great printer and probably a great 1st printer. This is my second 3D printer as I already had the Maker Select from Monoprice.

I do love my Select mini. I was well prepared to make excuses for anything because of its price. but so far it has not given me any significant issues. My biggest grip is how the bowden tube is routed into the heatsink/hotend. Why is is not a single ptfe tube down to the throat instead of that mess there. But its prints have come out really really good. I'm so divided about that fan shroud, I want to hate it but I can see its doing its job very well

The Mini Select is my first 3d printer. I didn't like that it couldn't print TPU, but I did a mod that allows it to print TPU and now it works great for any filament I've tried so far. I was also having trouble with ABS prints with the nozzle scraping the print, but I fixed that by changing the flow rate to 98.5%. I was also able to print some XT. I think the next thing I need to do is add glass on top of the build plate because it's slightly bowed out so it's a tiny bit higher in the middle than on the edges.

I use Repetier-Server with Repetier-Host for both of my printers. They both have Marlin firmware. I have it connected to an older computer that I set up as a server with Repetier-Server on it. I was using a Raspberry Pi with it, but that randomly paused every once in a while. The new server setup works really well. I can slice and print from the Repetier-Host software using either Sli3er or Cura. Or I can set up any slicing program with the printer and just upload the G-code via the web interface. It works really well. Oh, and I just got some flexible filament, and I can print using the bowden with the extruder I designed. I just have to figure a way out to get it to stick to the bed better. It's a long tube too, almost 2 feet on my large printer. My design is gear reduced, with bowden tube on both the inlet and outlet right by the hobbed bolt.

I bought this printer last summer. It was a bit painful at first. It worked fine early on, then the heat insulation+tape on print head detached. And the temp sensor on printhead died. I ordered replacement parts from China. Then the flatbead heating died - in standard configuration the flatbead heat sendor and heating element wires have 5 bends and the wire was bad quality. I drilled a hole in the back of the chassis and rewired it with proper copper wiring with only one loose U bend. It now has worked flawlessly for months.

Sold! I don't need a 3d printer but I sure want me one. Because I'm quite sure, the multitude of brackets and trinkets that I want to print out will be useful. Plus I feel this price point is a good way of getting my toes wet, but if I made enough I'd rather hop in around the $500 price point. Thanks for a great overview!

This is fun to watch this old review. My first 3D printer was this one. Oh and by the way, instead of leveling screw to screw, you level in a rectangle that is just smaller. Of course, now I am looking to upgrade in size. Now you're making me rethink size. But then of course I had nothing in mind productive when I purchased the monoprice mini. Over time, things come to mind and prints are produced to address those needs. Maybe size does matter in my future needs/dreams. Of course new materials extrusion capability is certainly a factor leading to upgrades. 8:18 I have to disagree if you. It doesn't print ABS worth beans. 9:20 the thermocouple on the build plate,…… I have replaced mine twice now. LOL since I bought a pack of five, I had three more to go Hahahahaha and its not the soldering job, it's the wires that break after many flexes.
@ThomasAndersonbsf8 жыл бұрын
I found to avoid soldering things I was able to use a piece of copper tubing and clamp it over the two wires together :) being in the US you can just look up K&S model train bits as they sell a whole host of metal tubes so you can use aluminum or copper or even brass if you wish, and 3/32nds I think is the second to smallest size, with a 1/16th sized, tube too, and a tubing cutter while useful is not necessary, you can just use an exacto knife with some pressure rolling it on a piece of tough plastic of some sort :)
@3dpprofessor8 жыл бұрын
I'm going to have to do this again, so I'll give something like this a try. Wonder if there's anywhere local I can get a crimping tool.
@ThomasAndersonbsf8 жыл бұрын
I just used a pair of pliers and made the tube short so crimping the whole thing crimped on both wires with out putting too much straight section since the tubing is a LOT harder to bend than the wire. :)

Sounds like a winner. May get one for those times when I get behind. What's the hard to change printers with S3D all about? When setup correctly it's a simple drop down menu from the edit process bottun. Wifi is really great. I've setup octoprint via Raspi on all my printers. The Rep1 and 2 were the easiest to get going there. Plus they allow for a cheap usb cam to monitor the print. Big printers are still really cool. I've finally dialed in my Trex+ and it does beautiful work. Only took two weeks (four jobs) to pay for itself so it's gravy from here on out.

I had no problems with the cat print with the same printer. The temperatures were off slightly, but still usable in my case, so I am wondering if it came down to the ambient temp and the choice of PLA. I use Hatchbox PLA. Works great but clear likes to shrink a bit/edges curl. The raft did come off stupid easy though, so it is more of a model design flaw. This thing never fails to impress me, as failures are USUALLY completely my own fault, which is a unique experience in the 3d printing world. The cat is one of those lucky charm cats btw, i forget what they are called.

I have this printer, prints better then my friends $600 printer. However the print bed is smaller by about half. The tape works excellent, at least for me, i still have the same original tape, ive made hundred + hours on it. the cat raft for me, was flawless, and i printed 3 (one for each kid) - i used 200* pla... maybe you had something else? the fan can be controlled right on the OSD and turned off, turned off in your slicer, or in the webUI. taking it off like you described is... silly... It will also take an E3D-v6 hotend with a quick printed part (adapter) ive also created a filament guide with built in filter and put on thingiverse which pretty much stops all gunk/gust/hairs etc going into the printer It will also take a glass surface because of the bed area that doesnt go towards the print area you can put the clamps.

Not having one of them on hand I'm hesitant to give an opinion. But from what I've seen the build volume is only slightly bigger, but early adopters have had troubles with print quality. Ok @3D Printing Professor (Wish I knew how to make a reference to a user) , I'm a bit confused on this. Monoprice's site indicates all kinds of material support (PLA ABS TPU) but only a 230 degree hot end temp. Most of the ABS I've looked at is 240-260. I also understand that the use of a bowden tube makes TPU/flexible filaments nearly unusable. Who's right?
@3dpprofessor7 жыл бұрын
Wholly Mindless most ABS I've used prints fine at 230 in my experience. And this particular Bowden tube, reportedly, is so close to the filament size that with a slight modification to the feed mechanism to close the gap TPU will work, though I've yet to make that mod and try it.

I just got one of these in the other day. I have a temporary set up going until I finish renovations to turn my basement from a tabletop games room into my office. I am definitely going into printing completely blind now, but the setup wasn't all that hard. I have some questions about the printer though. Is fixing this easy for someone with very little electrical and mechanical experience? When it comes to power, would it be a good idea to keep other things on the same circuit off while printing to avoid blowing a fuse?
@JosephLarson6 жыл бұрын
The only thing stopping you from fixing your MPSelect Mini is the fear of taking something apart that is clearly well put together, and questioning whether you'll be able to put it back together. And the best way to get over that fear is get your hex wrenches and flat head screw driver and take the thing apart. Once you do that, and once you get it back together, you realize this machine is *yours*. It is surprisingly easy to fix the MP Select Minis.
@CptPipebeard6 жыл бұрын
Well that's good to know. I did the print included with the printer so far while waiting for my other filaments to come in the mail and I can agree that its not that great, or I screwed up putting it in at first since I can deduce that if I did nothing wrong at all, its precisely enough to make the model. Is it normal for prints to take 3 hours? I didn't want to move it beyond 1x speed since I don't know how that's going to wear the parts out. Hopefully I'll get to taking some pieces off and putting them back on again tomorrow.

@3dpprofessor7 жыл бұрын
You can turn off the fan in the slicer, but you still want the fan on to cool the hot block to prevent heat creep. Their fan is doing double duty and for ABS you only want the cooling on the heat block, not blowing on the filament. That's the problem, but I don't think it's hard to fix.

Would you able to use nylon filament with this printer? I'm hoping to print some replacement parts for vintage RC cars.
@BlairMaynard7 жыл бұрын
According to the matterhackers website, Nylon filament requires temperatures above 240°C to extrude. The Monoprice specs say the Select Mini v1 head goes up to 250°C. Not sure about v2, which is coming out in April. I believe there is a change to the head (for the better), so I think it is safe to say that the v2 will do Nylon. And may have a more easily changeable head which is good because Nylon wears out the nozzle (watch the professor's other videos).

Just estimating off the top of my head, $1.50. Tops. Probably less than $1 actually. With FFF 3D printing the material cost is literally the least consideration. Especially with sparse infill material cost is cheap. What costs is operator time and expertise and amortized machine cost. But then that gets complex, so I'll just leave it there.

Look up my 3D printing 101 series, in particular the bit about how FFF 3D printers work. The trick is to export to an STL, which a google search for "3DS Max export STL" shows that there's an export option built right in. So export your STL, load it into your slicer, and print away.

You mean corner ringing? Not as much as with my other printers, though like with my other printers it probably depends on where you print on the build plate. Print closer to the base of the arm where there's less wiggle and you'll see less ringing, I think.

I mean the texture of the items (things) you print, as you can see in this image: goo.gl/images/3C4db8 It looks like it's layered. That is my question: does it have a smooth surface on the items it prints, or not. Much appreciated :)

"The bigger the print the more likely to fail." In MY OPINION that is completely false, it all comes down to your skill level and how you slice the model. I speak from experience, I own a CR-10!

I'm not saying that a larger print is going to fail, just that a larger print, that takes more time, has more opportunity to fail. Now, nothing against larger prints. It's.. a.. it's called a lisp. Mine is fortunately pretty mild, but, yeah, sometimes it manifests. Hope it doesn't bother you too much.

how well does it print tpu?
@3dpprofessor7 жыл бұрын
Unmodified, not at all. There are modifications to close the feel path so that TPU is possible, but it's tricky and not actually recommended. I've getting the V2 soon, so maybe things are better.
@TheTechManEliteOfficial7 жыл бұрын
can you recomend a quality printer for under 1000 for tpu?
@3dpprofessor7 жыл бұрын
I like the flash forge creator pro in that category. I like it so much I modded my Rep1 with it's parts to do TPU with.
@TheTechManEliteOfficial7 жыл бұрын
does the flash forge creator pro need any modding to print tpu?
@3dpprofessor7 жыл бұрын
Not to print TPU. It probably has a host of other mods that you want to do, but not for TPU.

I'm trying to use ABS. The build plate did not have any tape or anything like that. I just got this printer and am having a problem with adhesion for the first layer. The build plate refuses to go above 80 degrees for the build plate. I am worried that I will need to return this printer because I got it so I would not be confined to only using PLA.
@3dpprofessor7 жыл бұрын
ABS is hard no matter what printer you're using. I'd recommend starting with Algix dura then work up to PET.
@3dpprofessor7 жыл бұрын
ABS will print with a lower build plate temperature, as long as you have good adhesion and good ambient temperatures. For adhesion I'd recommend build tack or a thick layer of hairspray on glass. For ambient temperatures, don't use it next to the air conditioner vent.
@tecnoturd7 жыл бұрын
3D Printing Professor ok I was hoping it was just adhesion. I will use the hair spray. Out of curiousity what is build tack and should I put painters tape on my heat bed since it does not have anything on top of it?

3D Printing Professor Thank you.

Adhesion is important, especially to ABS. ABS doesn't stick well to blue tape. BuildTak is a black polymer surface that you buy and attach. Check out my video about build surfaces.

Hey Professor, I like you style, You your review is solid, however it is a cheap Chinese printer, how long before it starts to fail epic! cranking up the music at the end of the video is annoying to say the lease. Just sayin!
@3dpprofessor8 жыл бұрын
Totally botched the music in this episode. Sorry about that. Like I said, I've already found one major weak point in the solder on the thermocouple. However, it can be fixed, and that's the best part. Cheap, but open.

Sure, I like little elephants, was given 1 by a kid in Afghanistan and have been collecting them since. Elephants are considered the wisest and strongest animals, very Nobel animals.
