Had this done.. it was quick and comfortable... but not to comfortable when they want the back deep parts of your teeth..

oh thank goodness. I have braces and am getting them off soon and my orthodontist never took impressions before I got them on and I never knew why and we have the same scanner. Ive always heard bad stories about the impressions so Im not a fan lol Thank you for the info!!!

Bradley Nirenblatt 1 second ago I researched many different scanners before choosing our 3Shape Trios. Our patient's love not having impressions and seeing their teeth and the way they meet (occlusion) in 3D. For me as the doctor, 3 Shape has developed some amazing software to allow us to make our own aligners in house with a 3D printer. We are not quite there yet but stay tuned! Another great benefit is that the aligners and retainers fit amazingly well; much better than using impression material.

In general, how long after a retainer scan would someone get their braces off?

It depends on your orthodontist but typically around 4 weeks as the “braces” need to be digitally removed from your .STL file ( your 3D teeth models) then the models are 3D printed and then the retainers are made from the 3D printed models. It can certainly be accomplished faster than 4 weeks but this is average.

No gagging because it is essentially a camera taking pictures of the surfaces of the teeth.

I have a question: does the devise touch the teeth when doing the scanning, or does the dentist only "hover over" them? I'm about to get a retainer for my lower teeth but I have veneers on my upper teeth (I broke them as a kid) and I can't stand having those touched my anyone or anything!

Hi Cynthia, you don't have to worry about your upper veneers because the scanner does hover over the teeth and shines a light over them to take images. We don't physically have to touch your teeth. The technology is really amazing. The image creates a 3D imaging file called an .STL file which can be 3D printed in our office to make retainers and clear aligners without sending them to a lab or a mail order aligner company.
