A 3dsmax tutorial intended to introduce easy polygon modeling techniques to achieve an interesting geometric torus bracelet, ring, earring, or architectural decoration. This is a basic exercise which can be followed in 3dsmax 2010 or higher and does not require any addons or plugins. Basic knowledge of the Graphite modeling tools, hotkeys, and modifiers is recommended.

@luxxeon3d
@luxxeon3d 9 жыл бұрын
+bvaarts tutorial The topology tools in the Graphite ribbon are very powerful, and can be used to bring all kinds of unique stylistic shapes to certain objects. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of tutorials out there which represent the possibilities of that feature, mostly because it's not particularly practical for standard, every day modeling purposes. However, if you are at all interested in abstract models, or modeling unique shapes for 3d printing, those features can come in very handy.

@luxxeon3d
@luxxeon3d 4 жыл бұрын
Collapse All is a function of the modifier stack which will apply all the active modifiers in the stack down to a single Editable Polygon object. Just right-click on the top modifier in the stack. It will open a menu which contains several options. You will see an option called "Collapse All" in the list, just click that option.

@@alazmi7263 There's also an option for "collapse to". If you select anything in the modifier stack, then right click and select collapse to, it will apply everything that was above that point in the stack. Anything below it will still remain intact.

cool ... how did u select loop by polygon???
@luxxeon3d
@luxxeon3d 9 жыл бұрын
Ali sabah Thank you. The loop selection by polygon is done in 3dsmax by first selecting just one polygon, then hold down Shift on the keyboard, and select a second polygon in the direction you wish for the loop to go. This will select the entire loop. In 3dsmax 2015 or higher, you can also simply double-click on a selected polygon to get the entire loop selection.

Blender can do just about anything 3dsmax can do. The difference is just that it might take a few more steps. Blender doesn't have the same topology generator that Max does, but it's still possible to do it. If you notice, most of the models on this channel are done in both softwares.

I managed to do it by first creating the three strips as planes (using the free Extra Objects Addon for the honeycomb) and then stacking the following modifiers: Array Cast (with Cylinder shape if you want a bit more roundness) Simple Deform (Twist, z-axis, with a multiple of 120° as angle) Simple Deform (Bend, y-axis, with 360° as angle) Weld Solidify Bevel Result: imgur.com/a/ogO8cqk you have to make sure that the top and bottom of the base mesh align perfectly

how to select all the faces in 13:12 the loop option is off on the polygon mode
@luxxeon3d
@luxxeon3d 5 жыл бұрын
Depending on the version of 3dsmax you are using, all you need to do is simply select the first polygon, then hold down Shift while hovering over the next polygon in the loop you wish to select. In current versions of the software, you should see a highlight outline of the loop you are about to select. While holding shift, just click on the second polygon and the loop should be selected. In older versions you were required to double click while holding shift.

I am using 3ds max 2017 and whenever I use the twist setting the torus never twists. It still shows it as a regular torus even after I render it.
@luxxeon3d
@luxxeon3d 7 жыл бұрын
The twist parameter seems to work fine for me in 2017, so I wonder if there is something else going on. Make sure you have all of the hotfixes and service releases installed. Are you using the latest 2017.1 release, or the original release? Also, be sure you're using the Torus Knot extended primitive in Circle mode, and not just simply the Torus standard primitive. The standard Torus primitive also has a twist feature, but it works entirely different from the Extended Primitive Torus Knot..

I did it, and it worked perfectly, but whenever I press F9 to get the real photo,I can't see the edges
@luxxeon3d
@luxxeon3d 9 жыл бұрын
Zakaria Dahi Yes, F9 is the hotkey shortcut to render your scene. If you wish to display edges in the viewport, then choose F4. This will toggle your "show edges" display off and on in the viewport. If you wish to render an image with visible edges, then you will need to use a material that can show edges. John Malcolm sir, I'm sorry for asking you many questions but i really want the answer of this question : do the 3d printer print the edges ?
@luxxeon3d
@luxxeon3d 9 жыл бұрын
Zakaria Dahi A 3d printer will print the model, but not the visible edges that we are talking about here. Some 3d printers can print in color, so if you want a specific color, that may work, but a 3d printer will not print textures like a wireframe material. A printer will only print geometry of the model.

if there aren't any plugins then why is your interface different from mine? there is no generate topology panel.
@luxxeon3d
@luxxeon3d 8 жыл бұрын
+Keagan Echols Hi, Keagan. Sorry for any confusion. I am using 3dsmax 2012 in this video. The Generate Topology panel was introduced in 3dsmax 2010, by default, in the Graphite Modeling Ribbon tools. So, be sure you have the Graphite Modeling Ribbon activated in your UI. You need to have 3dsmax 2010 or higher. No additional 3rd party plugins are required for completing this tutorial, but I do have my UI customized, and plugins added to it. However, I don't use any in most of my tutorials (unless I specify otherwise). While my UI is obviously customized, all the hotkeys and tools I'm using here are available by default.
@Terra_King
@Terra_King 8 жыл бұрын
+John Malcolm I'm not sure it's in the student version. I'm clicking show panels and they are all selected.
@luxxeon3d
@luxxeon3d 8 жыл бұрын
Keagan Echols Ok. If you have the Graphite Ribbon open at the top of the UI screen, the Generate Topology button is available when you open the expansion rollout under the tab labeled "Graphite Modeling Tools". You should see "Polygon Modeling" at the bottom of that tab, with an arrow next to it. Click on that, and it will open a rollout with additional options, inlcuding "Collapse Stack", "Convert To Editable Poly", and "Apply Edit Poly Mod". Generate topology is the very next option. docs.autodesk.com/3DSMAX/15/ENU/3ds-Max-Help/index.html?url=files/GUID-7358B7AB-86DB-4B3F-9954-BB11AA6FF3FE.htm,topicNumber=d30e121109

+John Malcolm hey how would you model complex objects like cars or other vehicles. wheels seem to be pretty self explanatory but what about the frame? I've seen multiple ways to do this but none seemed very professional. would Max be used to render a base mesh over to other programs like mud box or z brush for further sculpt or detail? Also would Max be used to model complex castles or cathedrals that are properly scaled?
@luxxeon3d
@luxxeon3d 8 жыл бұрын
Keagan Echols 3dsmax is often used for modeling architectural structures to scale, and is one of several packages taught in various CAD Arch/Viz schools. It's widely compatible with many CAD packages (with direct support for splines and line art, and has excellent tools for modeling to scale. As for cars, I haven't personally modeled many vehicles, but there's a lot of them out there created with the package. 3dsmax, like Maya, is distributed and developed by Autodesk; the same company that develops Mudbox. Base models can be created in Max, and sent to Mudbox for further detailing.
