What do you think about Fusion 360 ???
@luxxeon3d8 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I have never had the opportunity to work with Fusion 360. I hear it is a good program for CAD or CAM work. The modeling I do is for polygon objects (subdivision surfaces) in 3dsmax. Fusion 360 uses a very different type of object surface creation method, based on curves and boolean functions. It's probably an excellent choice if you are doing serious product development for machine fabrication.

Just bumped into your video while looking for tutorials on displacement. I can't do 3d as much as I want and always wondered how these kind of shapes could be achived . You unfolded a new world of modeling to me that I didn't know jet, I knew that poly modeling is a very powerfull tool but never had the time to experiment with it beside the very basic usage. THANK YOU SO MUCH

Good job sir!. But just want to ask on how to add objects in your extended primitives?
@luxxeon3d7 жыл бұрын
Additional objects can be added to any sub-menu in 3dsMax though the creation of maxscript tools or plugins. MCG tools can also add new objects to primitives or modifiers. This is a whole tutorial in itself, but it's possible to create custom primitive objects. There is a maxscript called "Primitive Maker", available on Scriptspot.com, which will allow you to add new primitives to the menus as well.
@MicheusVieira8 жыл бұрын
Nice one John. It's a beautiful piece too. :) You bring me an other challenge here - try to make this object using Wings3D. We don't have the initial primitive; Detach is our Loop Cut; we don't have the Relax modifier for face so we need to use other approach for that; we can use Bevel to get this Chamfer result; ...

I thought you couldn't use any smoothing modifiers as 3D printers don't recognise them? Amazingly well-explained tutorial. I could follow every step without 3DS Max open even. You make a great teacher
@luxxeon3d7 жыл бұрын
Subdivision surface modifier actually changes the geometry by smoothing the surface with additional polygon density. You would need to collapse this modifier before exporting, but it will quadruple the amount of polygons while it smooths sharp edges, therefore can indeed be recognized by 3d printers. You are correct in the fact that smooth shading is merely a surface algorithm, and attempts to make the object appear smooth by using lighting tricks. Smooth shading will not export as geometry changes on the object, and can not be recognized by 3d printers. Subdivision smoothing is completely different, and works for this purpose. Hope this helps.
@KingUsyk7 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for taking the time to explain that, it's much more clear. I understand how it works now. Excellent tuition very clear and easy to follow, good job :)
@luxxeon3d7 жыл бұрын
No problem, glad it helped. Keep in mind also that whenever you use a subdivision modifier like Meshsmooth, Turbosmooth, or OpenSubDiv in 3dsMax, the default usually has the ISOLINE display mode active. Isoline display is a way to help you visualize the low poly wireframe cage beneath the subdivision modifier while you work on it. However, this option needs to be deselected or turned off before you collapse the stack for export. If you do not turn off Isoline display, it will screw up the mesh horribly upon export, and it will not 3d print. Be sure this option is off before collapsing the stack to reveal the true topology of the subdivided model to export.

It's been a while, but I'd like to thank you again for this reply. This one snippet of information has helped me no end. I look forward to future videos

you forgot to mention at around 3:58 an on that you had cap segs set to 5 this makes a world of difference when trying to follow, mine were on 0 then i wondered why u had so many poly's. Other than that loving the tuts.
@luxxeon3d8 жыл бұрын
Very good point. I should have mentioned that. Cap segs are set to 5 by default when drawing up the object, so it slipped my mind that this could be changed by some users.

great tutorial! longer then usual but also, nicer. around @32:00 you use "remove" with ctrl+backspace, i experimented doing normal "remove" and then "ctrl+backspace remove" and they resulted different. i guess ctrl+backspace removes edges AND vertices.. right? thats seems very usefull. it would be very nice to learn.. umm.. secret hotkeys like these. do you have any plans to make a video about it?
@karinamartus97607 жыл бұрын
Amazing tutorial, the way you explain everything it's so clear and simple. But could I do that with Matrix program as I can see you using different software. Karina
@luxxeon3d7 жыл бұрын
I don't have much experience with Matrix CAD software, but I know it's the industry standard for adding gemstones and custom designs to jewelry models, so as long as it has the ability to edit objects at the lowest levels of control, then it should be capable of doing something similar.

@luxxeon3d9 жыл бұрын
+Kvant Live Thank you. Yes, this is a model which may need some finalizing and preparation before printing,; especially on certain machines, and with certain materials. These videos are intended mostly for preliminary design and creation process before 3d printing. It's always best practice to STL check, and take the model into a pre-printing software like Netfabb to check for any issues before sending to a printer. Supports, if necessary, can be added in a post-processing software, and are probably best to include them that way.

Quoting the Wolfram and Wiki literature: The sphericon is the convex hull of two semicircles on perpendicular planes, with centers at a single point. Its surface consists of the pieces of four cones. It resembles the old in shape and, like it, is a developable surface that can be developed by rolling. However, its equator is a square with four sharp corners, unlike the oloid which does not have sharp corners. Since I started this one with a Sphericon shape, I kept the name for the title, although the final version isn't either in mathematical truth.
