Hi, everyone. In this tutorial, we use a procedural strategy to quickly design a 3d pattern sphere in 3dsMax 2017. Most of the techniques used in this video are common polygonal modeling procedures which can translate to other capable 3d modeling applications.

Thank you for the tutorial, John. Having a hard time convert to Blender version, especially the Connect Edges section.
@luxxeon3d
@luxxeon3d 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Toki. I've been working on a Blender version as well and face the same problem. The J key is like the Connect tool in 3dsMax on the vertex level, but doesn't work the same for edge selections. It also will not connect vertices the same way when multiple selections are involved. I got so far as the first remeshing algorithm by using Bevel on the first set of edges, but can not find a way to proceed from there. So there must be an alternative solution..
@tokiFX
@tokiFX 7 жыл бұрын
I come out with a solution, but way more complex then just using "Connect Edges", and is by far the most "simplified" way I can come out with after couple hours. Maybe will try to simplified it before I make a video.

I'll be interested to see what you come up with. If you don't mind, I'll credit you in my own video if we can find a simplified way around the problem.

Toki, I think I found the pattern a different way in Blender. I'm starting with Icosphere, then subdivide modifier, and then bevel modifier. Playing with the bevel modifier settings is producing a pattern very similar to the one I found in 3dsMax, although I will have to experiment to see if it's comparable.

Ok I solved the issues, for the most part, although it still requires some manual edge input for various parts, the results, in the end, are almost exactly the same. There are just some minor aesthetic differences. I'll have my video for Blender up soon.

After chamfering and creating the holes, select the edges of the pentagon and then select similar. Then do a flow connect. make sure to select all and then spherify. The pentagonal sections will be rounded too. Of course if you want those sections to remain flat, then don't do any of that!

great as usual....one question....love those materials at the end....as many others spread around your tutorials...any chance that you may do a little tuttorial about those? expecially those like that at 9.07 of this tutorial? I suppose you use either mental ray or iray for your renders..but even if you use other ones I think that the metod should be somehow similar

Yes, I do have plans to come out with some rendering tutorials, particularly for ART render engine in 3dsmax2017, which will likely become the permanently integrated render engine in the software going forward, as well as some 3rd party engines like Corona and iRay.

cool...I love to go "photorealistic" as much as I can...but those "aged" metals are my...weak spot...I know that specular, reflect and refract do the trick...as "composing" each level when needed...but maybe my approach isn't that corect in some way...still a bit away from that "real" look

Actually based on an Autodesk announcement, it is looking like Arnold will be the go-to "pro" renderer for future versions of 3dsmax: knowledge.autodesk.com/support/3ds-max/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Changes-to-Rendering-in-3DS-Max-2018.html In my humble opinion, this is a very good thing except for certain limitations (e.g., distributed rendering).
@luxxeon3d
@luxxeon3d 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, they will most likely add Arnold in the same way they had added MentalRay years ago, but I think the ART render engine will still be in place as the new "scanline" type of engine. This is all speculation of course, but the ART engine is quite good as an overall PBR engine, and most Standard materials and scenes will convert to ART very easily. Arnold, on the other hand, is quite complex and will be useful mostly as a production engine for major VFX and studio work. Who knows though. I actually appreciate the ART engine, and find it quite good. Even for Mograph type of animation.

Art is good, the only donwside, for me at least, is that it takes only a few of the procedural maps, I think it happened to me with Speckle and Dent, if I'm correct, and I tend to use the procedural, with the right tweak the rusults are great...instead I believe that Iray and Mentalray materials can be swaped as you like

Do you have a video for how to do this in the latest version of 3DS Max? I have followed this video to the T one 4 separate new projects now and mine does not come out thick like yours. After chamfering, its all just single lines.

Hmm. Unfortunately, I do not have the latest versions of max. If I could find a friend who owns a copy, I may try to redo some of these tutorials for the modern versions because clearly, some things have changed since I made these videos years ago.

in the chamfer settings, how do you switch it from 1.0mm to 1.0 degrees
@luxxeon3d
@luxxeon3d 6 жыл бұрын
THUNGUNSPRO *X* what kind of degrees do u mean? A degree is just a generic unit, so change the unit type for the scene itself to whatever u like. If u just want arbitrary units, then use generic max units for the scene. Max is very accurate in it's scene measurements so it doesn't allow u to change from one specific unit of measure to another on individual tools. Unless you are referring to angles?
@THUNGUNS

John Malcolm 4:17 It says 1° instead of 1mm. And i think that is the reason why mine isn't working

Update: 1080p version incoming: ultraimg.com/images/2017/04/09/0KsL.png (Be sure to click on the image to zoom to full res, and hit F11 for full screen). So, some reuse of the background from the last one (all I could cobble together on short notice). With all of the detail present, it could use some DOF work to blur the background (and even some of the foreground), but I have to fiddle with that quite a bit to get it just right - might happen over next several weeks as I find time. This is one of those images that the more you stare at it - and it is a bit mesmerizing, the more you notice some cool details somewhere in the image (especially at 4k) that your mind (or at least my mind) begins to appreciate, because there is no shortage of them to be found. I might work on a new background for this one, but the current one is hard to beat. Overall, I think it came out well (even if it is a bit artificial and CG looking) for about an hour's effort (ten mins creating the shape from the original video, thirty mins composing the scene, ten mins fiddling with lighting, and ten mins spent on post-processing in PS). Any comments or constructive criticisms are always welcome! Anyways, this is my first pass on this one.
