We have a new 3ds Max 2022! Its just 3 months after the latest update (2021.3). On this video I will cover all the news we had in 3ds Max during last year (2022, 2021.3, 2021.2,2021.1). 3ds Max had a turboboost in multiple areas, but I will say this year the biggests ones has been around modeling.
SmartExtrude sets a new precedent in to poly modeling. For the first time ever we have extrusions inwards, with automatic bridging in a poly modeling application. Modifiers like symmetry, Slice, relax, extrude, and smooth has been multithread and improved, with speed improvements that goes from 1.5X to 3000X, huge gains more visible on cpus with more cores and big poly counts. (The tests described here are done with an 8 core machine, cpus with more cores will create even bigger gains.).
Then add the work done on retopology, meshcleaner, subdivide, new selection metodes, options to define pixel selection, pathdeform, and we got a very solid modeling updates.
But we didnt had only improvements on modeling. We get a huge facelift on viewport quality, new OSL maps, lots of improvements on Bake to texture. Big updates in Arnold, including Arnold Render view, a total new framebuffer in 3dsmax, support for tyflow, multiple performance enhancements, new PBR materials, import PBR tool, new security tools, improvements on maxscript, more python 3 support, and way more!

All this plus the $270/yr indie license. I was worried I'd have to move away from 3DS a few years back when the pace of development seemed stalled, but I'm really happy with it now. Which is amazing because I've been using it since I was 12, in 1992.

Had a lecture from Autodesk at Uni, they said they wanted to completely phase Maya out (Hard to believe, I know...)and only focus on Max when they rewrote the whole software.

@Mickey Mouse That's not how it works, It's the Studios & Schools who determine the tools that are used. Schools teach skills that are needed by Studios & Studios hire students who have the skills they need, software is just the middleman but has to be able to meet their intensive demands, blender doesn't seem to have that ability yet, at least for multi-million budget projects.

@Mickey Mouse Self-taught doesn't set you to work in Studios unless your CV & demoreel are exceptional & for overseas people they'll need a diploma to get a working Visa,. training will always exist as Studios also build their own tools & workflows.

If we get CAT animation update in the next MAX update I will be completely satisfied and happy with the current state of things! It has been slow moving these past few years but 3dsmax is back on top!

Really outstanding video Eloi, I've been neglecting moving up from 2020 and Vray 4.3 in my main clients pipeline. Am really eager to move up to 2022 and Vray 5 and play with all the new stuff.

Great work Autodesk, finally this software moving forward. Hope have these updated tools: hair&fur and liquids + foam. Hope to see smoke, fire etc. Favorite tools for now: liquids and extrude.

They need to update the Unwrap tools... but seriously, I'm excited for 3DS Max more than I was 3y ago. I wanted to move to Blender but now not so much...

its coming on the roadmap actually looks like they are doing ai uvws which will be sick ugh ill make a mess on my kepboard when that comes in 3ds max .

Well, I moved from 3ds max to blender due to the lack of feature improvements since many years and slow ui performance. I never regret this decision. Now I see that 3ds max is coming back to the road where it should be (btw, the new remesher is awesome!). Anyways, I think Autodesk needs more competition for not milking people without equivalent value ... blender's appearance means also 3ds max improvements.

​@@domedornThank god for Blender's competition. I too started using Blender after seeing their amazing improvements that sped up my workflow / lookdev and even viewport rendering. But my old dinosaur of a software is starting to get sexier and sexier by the minute.

@@mae2309 I’m a max user migrating to Blender and found out modeling in Blender is much easier than max. That being said, with this 3ds max update I think it might be better than the vanilla Blender in terms of modeling. I have to go back and use it once again.

@@ibayazitov this goes to show the tons of potential it has with minimum of development. You don't see that with other tools. Only the fact that max is still solid and alive even after decade of being neglected goes to show how crappy and superficial other tools are

This actually can be fixed by Qtfying their renderer UI by 3rd party renderers for even older version of 3dsMax. Arnold and ART never had this issue because their UI is Qt. So, if you are stuck with older version of Max, ask your renderer developers to convert their UI to QT. Native QT UI is also super fast. Just compare with Arnold/ART UI and your renderer UI.

Would be great to see soon Bifrost\Mudbox integration and a streamlined and improved UI, especially in SME and Scene Explorer department. I know that Thinking Particles and Tyflow are great powerhouses, but a multithreaded version of PF or tools like MASH would be seriously great too.

It really feels like 3ds max is getting some updates finally, but daaaaaamn they did take their time to get there.. still the list of thing to fix/improve is long but this is better than nothing.

Really good and impressive improvements, especially in the modelling workflow...it is gonna save tons of time for people, from hours to minutes ! very nice but the things I still very much think they must improve on that they forgot to are : * Maxscript multithread stable support. * Complete rewriting of their skin weights solutions (it is not intuitive enough and very outdated and full of issues, it is too tedious to work with and it's not efficient enough). * RTX cards realtime raytrace support for viewport rendering. * VR support for people who want to do everything in the program in VR. * Better and improved version of Hair & Fur (the built in hair plugin).

Esa es la idea. Hay demasiado que arreglar, lamentablemente, pero van por buen camino. Algunas herramientas tardan en sacarse porque tienen que estarbien pulidas.

Does anybody knows is there any possibility in max to inset or to extrude on an exact value during smart extrude? I mean it`s like you dragging polys with a mouse and typing exact value from a keyboard at the same time.

I don't know if it only happens to me but when I apply Unwrap UVW on a large number of objects; for example with UDIM tiles, the UV editor starts chugging a lot. I can work around that by collapsing the multiple meshes into one but that's not desirable in many cases. I tried doing the same thing with Maya with the same mesh and maya's UV editor works smoothly. I'd love to see this and a few other issues in UV editor getting fixed in 3ds max, because I've tried a lotta 3d softwares but I feel like there's nothing like 3ds max when it comes to modelling.

3dsmax Unwrap is a nightmare with denser meshes. Its why I moved to RizomUV and I ain't going back ever.

@@srdjankovic I actually moved to Rizom too a couple of months ago and it's so much smoother and easier to Unwrap denser meshes in it. whereas 3ds max simply fails to do a decent unwrap. you get a weird unwrap when you use peel and when you relax, the corner of the UV island will start spinning for eternity. Eh, In short it's a total nightmare.

For all those users who still like much more the SketchUP modelling way, the new extruding, it is a game changer, they finally are doing improvements which are useful and not just changing shortcuts and interface symbols which none cares and keep giving headaches to everyone

Around 1:26 the drop down modifiers list menu is still no QT? It still has the old style than the new ones coming to Max and I would bet it's a bit slow too

Hope one day we will have some random selections modifier for polys, vertex and edges. And other random modifiers for all kind of situations (copy, values .....)

that will be great. For the random selection modifiers I use tyselect (free, with tyflow), to select random elements, or by normals, size, etc...

I'm love 3ds max, but when I export big models to fbx, and after import it to Unreal Engine, then I'm always getting sick, why when I'm trying do it from Maya, then is always easy, and from 3ds max always difficult?

Has the viewport performance improve? Main reason I went to Blender, viewport performance and eevee. New Max have some great improvement.

Huge issue for me is that the Perspective Match tool in 2022 seems to be completely broken. Had to revert back to 2021 in order to complete a VFX assignment for a client

Eloi, You are trying to announce Max's innovations and keep the program alive, thank you. However, we have seen the updates such as animation rig and bifrost etc., which they mentioned in beta and future tabs on road maps, as only a picture for 3 years and they could not realize any of them. Should we wait 10 years or so? Does Autodesk really intend to do these things, or do they keep users busy with other programs, such as Blender, so that they don't escape. Do you have any information about the subject? Do you have the opportunity to ask?

Can't find a threshold option for weld in Symmetry modifier... in my current case it is a problem.. all vertex collapsed to one.. or disable welding... How do you use it with tiny models with many vertices?

little bit stupid way, but I use that: Slice modifier with removing and than Symmetry without "Slice along mirror" and "Weld seam"

To make it faster, instead of vertex searching for other close by vertex, the symmetry modifier "tag" each mirrored vertex, and its only welding each vertex with the other mirrored vertex , without needing the weld treshold. You can add a weld modifier in top. A lot of people was already concerned about the lose of this "weld" on symmetry.

Retopology its already multithreaded when you work over multielements. For faster retopo... you will not need to wait much longer

Thank you for the video! I really like the updates in 3ds Max 2022. Autodesk seem to take 3ds max and its users seriously again. What bugs me though is why Autodesk seem to need to make new versions every year, even if all these updates could as easily be a 2021.4 update. It makes it very hard to start using it, since all the plugins you use need to be supported. Especially those with installers. Also the process of moving to a new Max takes a few hours to set up. Unless they do some ground up changes to max that requires a new version, this is only causing problems for users.

Agree with you, I will like longer releases to have more time to port things. But the reasons are, that sometimes you need to do sdk breaks to change core things in max, to do things faster. On 2021.2 for example they added smart extrude on editpoly object, but they was not able to add it in edit poly modifier because if they do, and you reopen the same scene in 2021.1 for example, because edit Poly do the operations "on the fly" you will get different results opening your same scene on different max, even all are 2021. So... this will be a problem to, and they had to wait to 2022 to add the functionality to edit poly.

@@andvfx GOod point, though personally I would prefer them to just give users a warning, that if you upgrade it will break old scenes. Since you can always go always download an older version if you like

I've been playing with Maya and 3ds max over the past year. Now time to renew and I'm torn apart. I'm a hobbyist right now. Which should I choose? I haven't tried animation do not sure I'd be into it. So far, I like modeling and texturing and lighting

If you need to animate and you want to work somewhere... Maya is more in demand. Even max has some good animation tools like CAT/biped, they hasn't been updated for a while. But if your main focus will be modeling/lighting, I think you will be pretty good choosing max.

I guess its for student download only i have 3DS Max version 2021.3 installed i updated from 2021.2 but as i check the desktop application of Autodesk official app i see there are no downloads so when will i be able to update from 2021.3 to 2022.

with every version I expect to see modeling in nurms mode (ie. editing lowpoly cage with vertices sticking to subdivided geometry, like in old xsi).. sigh.. may be next year.. Nice extrude though.

That option for symmetry is meant for cases when you need symmetry at odd angles or non planar symmetry?

There are two methods not for Slice and Symmetry. There is planar, which has been updated to be able to use X, Y and Z instead of just one plane, and there is radial, which can be set on only one axis of your choice.

AMD Zen 3 CPU's are faster at _both_ single and multi threaded tasks than anything Intel makes, core for core. Plus you can get up to _16_ cores on desktop for a relatively reasonable price, and 64 cores HEDT. Intel has a lot of catching up to do at the moment.

I only wish for 3 things A new frame buffer. With the current one you can't check you render elements, use a LUT/OCIO or make any color adjustments. fix arnold toon shader. you can't save as png if you use the toon shader. Better hair and fur.

Yes, you need to install them again. I'm still using 2019 version because of this. I mainly use 3ds Max for Hard Surface modelling and rely mostly on external plugins for such task.

​@@OnyxLee HardMesh for booleans and TopoLogiK for retopology. Outside 3ds Max I also use Fusion 360, which it is another program from Autodesk but its incredibly useful for hard surface modelling

Any improvements for AMD GPU users? Quicksilver renderer is quite good and would stand to use upgrading to d3D12 for example and open source so rendering can be done efficiently on AMD gpus for example. Right now, Max seems like its badly optimized for AMD gpu's.

I will not recommend a macbook Pro for 3dsmax. 3dsmax works only under windows, so you will need to install windows on your macbook pro, that its possible running parallels, but because its running under emulation mode, it will loose performance. You will be better with any windows machine with a dedicated nvidia card, even if its a lowend graphics card.

But the new retopology tools are separate download, not really integrated into the package. You will not be able to use them with e.g. trial version.
