Unboxing, first pitch, seam sealing and modifying the Lanshan 1 Pro tent from 3F UL GEAR.
I'm starting to pull together a more lightweight setup to plan some multi-day hikes/camps for next year. As I slowly work through my kit and replace it with cheap lightweight kit, I want to make sure it all works properly before I head out on my adventures. So, as I get new bits of budget ultralight gear I'll be testing it out on my 'regular' camps. Better safe than sorry!

Handy having a back garden to pitch the thing, I had to do the 2 tents I've done in the loft 😆 I used the same sealant, goes further and looks less messy if you thin it with a bit of white spirit. Can get it in the nooks and crannies easier then too. I bought the non-pro so I only had to seal the guy-out seams tbh. The one thing that proper wound me up is the footprint not covering the floor of the vestibule. Dunno why it annoys me, but it does.

Only just started watching your post ive subed as its looks good. Nice to see a channel that doesnt throw money at gear then say wow this 600 quid is really good. I should bloody well hope so at that price. This little Lan Shan looks good for the price compared to other lightweights, seam sealing is not the end of the world. Especially compared to the old messawaxing you had to do on canvas tents.good review I'll stick with my 10 year old Golite Tipi even with its little hole patch With the bath tub floor and inner I spent a week on a Scottish Island (TEXA) at minus 5 nights and pouring rain but was fine. Without the bath tub and a piece of Tyvek it is ultralight specially using the walking pole extension for the centre pole. For one person its huge.

I seam sealed my Lanshan 2 Pro with a sealant that just pulled out in long strips when I used the tent for the first time. Re-did it last weekend with the stuff you used, (looks a lot better) but didn’t do the seams that ran along the bottom. Left the tent up all night in the rain. Next day, full of water. Guess i need to do those bottom seams with the new sealant 🤔. I think I’ll copy your mods for the bathtub corners too - thanks!

I really like the look of the Lanshan 1, I'd looked at them earlier in the year and had mentioned it to you so when you mentioned you were getting one I decided to wait to hear your verdict. Perhaps the weight saving over the Lanshan 2 isn't massive but I like the idea of having only one pole to put in place, great colour too, would have been my choice although I was intending getting the version with the separate inner (Non Pro version?). I like the mods you've done, I'd have done the same (apart from the sealer as I make my own) especially the shockcord on the inner tie out points, I don't like fixed length cord tie-outs as they restrict where you can place the peg plus the shockcord gives the inner a bit of flex when you're moving around inside and the shockcord on the door is just a simpler solution. Not sure whether I should wait for your review or just go ahead and get one, looks pretty good to me. As always, good video, thanks for sharing, Thumbs Up :-)

For size, weight, colour and style, I really like this tent. However, they're notorious for condensation and I think having to seam seal is taking the micky. That's why I've decided to go for the Sierra Designs Clearwing 2. It's a bit heavier but has the ability to stargaze as well as big vestibules and nice design. Be interesting to see how you get on with this Lanshan, especially the condensation issue. Brilliant in depth look at the tent though, nice one :-)

my backpack from 3F gear..they do very good quality items..as a tent i didn't want deal with sealing, so i bought Gossamergear the one..and just bought the Two..gossamer gear lighter weight but only 1 wall..i was thinking buy 3F 2 pro but didn't..dropped my weight than added 11oz with XL another rain cover..just testing it how works..the rain cover from aliexpress too and 210cmx300cm only 310gr and i think 15D Nylon.. i am thinking use it under snow for extra cover..and see how goes..poles i bought from Nature hike, and 130cm each only 145gr and alloy head..they sell 1 for $49 (pear is $104)..i use 3F UL 40 plus 16lt water repellent backpack from them..and i like it ..light weight and no frame that way backpack gets shape of person back side, and comfort carry..only it is not wide diameter so kind of putting big stuff little bit hard..to do i use dry suck bag which is only 5 oz 40lt one from sea to summit..i put in almost everything as an order (night clothes/sleeping bag/air pad/sleeping bag cover/liner) and compress them, take air out from valve (valve i patched on and works well, i got it from heavy duty military waterproof bag) with that everything stays perfect dry and goes in bag easy..than have a lot space for tent/footprint/extra rain cover if i us/cooking gear/food..all weight goes under 20lbs..

Machines can seal the seams with tape on non-silnylon tents, but this would have to be painted on by hand, meaning each tent would have to be erected in a space, with a human being manually painting on the sealant, while the space stays occupied for several hours for the sealant to dry. The cost of the space and the humans to do the works as well as the fact that manufacturing would have to be slowed (or end up with a massive backlog of tents to seal) would exponentially increase the production cost and make it far more expensive at retail.

The problem with tents that do not extend to the ground is that wind, rain and snow can easily enter the tent. Additionally, you require a warmer sleeping bag or quilt for warmth. Simply put, a tent that extends to the ground has a warmer environment. You wouldn't need to waterproof the seams if the manufacturer used glue construction instead of sewing and the cost of the tent would be conceivably less and lighter.
@GrizzleGear
@GrizzleGear 2 жыл бұрын
The tent doesn't have to extend to the ground. There is a bathtub floor which prevents rain from splashing up underneath the fly. This is a single wall tent. You want as much air flow as you can possibly get to prevent condensation. Extend the tent walls all the way down to the ground, and you get absolutely no ventilation, and condensation will rain on you all night long. Tents are designed this way for a reason. Also, this tent is made of silnylon. You can't "tape" the seams. If it was silpoly, you could, But the tent would be considerably more expensive.
@ULperformance
@ULperformance 2 жыл бұрын
@@GrizzleGear You exaggerate the amount of condensation due to a tent supported at ground level and ignore the fact that grasses and snow at ground level provide sufficient air for reducing condensation. An adjustable vent which every tent should have reduces the problem further. A tent particularly at ground level provides for tent warmth in cold environments vs a tent set-up above ground with no control of cold and cold wind entry. A tent at ground level reduces the influx of critters both flying and grounded. A floorless tent reduces the excessive cost and potential damage associated with a bathtub floor and provides the owner the option to decide what type ground sheet for what season is preferred.
@GrizzleGear
@GrizzleGear 2 жыл бұрын
@@ULperformance I don't exaggerate anything. Good air flow equals less condensation. That's not an argument. That's science. You are ignoring the fact that if you want to bring the fly down further in these tents, all you do is shorten your poles. You can bring your fly all the way down to the ground if you want. You've never owned a tent like this Have you? I live on Kauai. One of the wettest places on earth. Don't try to lecture me on condensation. 😂

@@daleyoutdoors warehouse space goes for £3 per month per square foot in China, £8-12 in a western country. Each tent would require 225square feet for 36 hours in the warehouse- that’s the day it was manufactured to apply the sealant and 24h drying time, including minimum space to walk around the tent safely. Each tent “bay” in your sealing warehouse costs you £675 per month, and you’ll get 20 tents through there each month. Meaning in China, you’re adding £33 in warehouse space alone. I’m not going to try to estimate how much a Chinese factory worker would take home, but sadly I imagine it’s negligible. If you want to buy a tent made in the uk or USA, then we’ll be looking at £132 extra on each tent. Let’s call the wage £8 per hour and on average a worker will seam seal 2 tents an hour, now we’re up to £136 extra per tent. Your tent cost £130 and was made in China. It’s now 25% more expensive and no-one has ever heard of it because it’s competing against Six Moon. A western manufactured tent went from competing against sierra designs to competing against msr and terra nova. You’re dead in the water, and that’s with ideal figures. We haven’t accounted for anything other than the theoretical best case scenario.

I wouldn't waste my money on a tent that is not made properly. Sealing the seams should be a factory operation and I think the tent is cheap and nasty for not having that done already BEFORE it is sold. I'll stick to my Vango - it may be a bit heavy but at least it was finished before it left the factory and it was cheaper than the part-finished rubbish from god knows where.

The sealing had nothing to do with quality actually. Tarptents you can also seam yourself to save costs and they are great quality tents. It's because silnylon cannot be taped so needs to be painted on by hand, and the tent needs to be set up for this and dry for several hours. This makes it an expensive step and some brands like Tarptent and also 3FUL I think, provide this service for extra cost. So you can turn it around actually, you don't HAVE TO do this yourself, but you can choose to to save some money. It's an easy and quite quick job as well, I found.
