You'll get little to no spatter while welding fluxcore if you back your wire speed down or turn your voltage up. I realize a coupon won't hold as much heat input, so backing your wire speed down to around 325-350 @ 24 volts will help it smooth out. I've built tanks for years and not just thin wall either. Even on 3" thick material I'm only around 28-30 volts and 400-450 on my wire speed. It turned out great, but the spatter you were getting while welding your root pass can be adjusted out 100%.

@LeadRakFPS

@livingintheLight. And? Just because he's at spray transfer settings doesn't mean it won't still leave spatter with the wrong combo of wire speed to voltage. Conversely, it will still leave spatter if below spray transfer and you have the wrong combination of wire speed to voltage. There is an actual sweet spot for settings wise when welding flux core. Especially dual shield. Doesn't matter what brand of inverter or suitcase/wire feeder you're using, either. The settings inside the feeder are pretty close starting points and usually only take a few seconds to adjust any spatter out (with the exception of tiny tiny little pin head bb's that easily come off while raking a wire brush or grinder with a wire wheel over it).

Stick or wire? (Mig/flux) turn your heat down to like 24-25 V. Wfs about 400-425. Work angle at 90* and slightly upwards. It will look like it’s going to blow out but be patient and it will fill in. Most shops don’t want any weave action these days so just drag your puddle up and even back step slightly without pulling out of your puddle too extreme. It’s a finesse thing and extreme patience. Practice is all that can help you perfect it. Stay with it you’ll have it down in no time.

A 45 degree angle up? You sir do not have a clue what your talking about. I work in a ship yard that produces ships for navy and coastgaurd. I am a welder foreman and teach welders to pass UT and RT welds using ceramic backing. So thanks for your input! @NathanPalmer

Came to say the same as Keith. Always done root pointing downwards at an angle. These little pieces are easy but once you have a 10ft tall wall you gotta weld up it'll change the gap during your weld. Once it starts to get more narrow you run a risk of stitching the sides together and not really feeding enough of your puddle to the backing groove to form that root. Also, it's more common to poke the backing out with your wire if you point it up. For filler and cap beads you can point up and push the puddle but for the root you're better off pointing down 👇 At least this is the standard when welding cruise ships.

Copper or ceramic backing which one is better what is the difference kindly explain
@Bagnon609
@Bagnon609 6 ай бұрын
Depends on the type of ceramic. In this case, the ceramic used is probably a general type being used as a backing (protects the weld from the back where the shielding gas can't access). Copper can transfer heat better, but is more expensive. If you need to control the heat more precisely, then a copper backing might be the better option. It will help by maintaining an even level of heat throughout the weld process.

In horizontal, you can usually turn the heat up a bit depending on the thickness of the plate/material, the angle of the work, and the size of the gap. Particularly, the root. Open root welding needs special attention.

On 2g you need top bevel to be 30° and bottom to be 15° with a 4mm gap. Using 0.45 wire with 100% co2 you would set it to 21 volts and 210 wire speed ipm. Angle it back into the puddle and slightly 10° up to make sure you are grabbing the top edge
