@weldingtipsandtricks Jody, I have long heard of this Spray Transfer method. Can you please explain to me how you know if your Machine is capable of this method?? For instance is the new PrimeWeld Mig 285 capable of this and the Fronius TransSteel 2200 & 2700 capable of performing Spray Transfer???

My Millermatic 255 still ton of spatter on pulse but the penetration is amazing. Maybe it’s just because I use it on 3/16” material half the time.

I've recently got to run some pulsed spray mig and the rmd process on a Miller pipeworks machine. Great processes. The guy asked me if I ever ran the RMD, I said no sir. He said you'll like it. It's almost cheating on welding a root in pipe. Great video sir. Keep up the great work.

been watching your videos for almost 10 years i think now, and i have learned so much. i was actually a welder in a factory for a hot 8 months, started out running the robots but eventually passed some kind of test for hand welding. i loved it but it took a toll on my body working 10 hour days in a factory so i ended up leaving. but i take what i learned, and use it whenever making something custom or repairs at home!

Nicely done! I've always tried showing younger guys how to weld that solid wire up hill. Most people really have a rough time of it. Lord knows that I did as well. Practice Practice practice and when you think you can do it no problem! That's when you gotta practice 😉👍

You mentioned the structural Codes being restrictive with the GMAW SC process. This is correct much to the surprise of many welders and their supervisors. Structural welding for Dow Chemical was/is to the AWS D1.1 Code and I believe it stated that for every 10% increase in material thickness above the WPS being used, a new WPQR needed to be performed.

Jody, I'm gonna comment before watching. I'm hoping this video will change my opinion. I have never been able to achieve improved vertical uphill welding with pulsed vs SC. Even though I could fine tune the arc for better appeal, I could never get more than about 8-10 percent increase in WFS and still control the puddle. I am hoping this is an eye opener for me so I can better inform my students. Thanks for all you do. Gerald

Pulse is very common Here in Europe . All Jobs with MAG Are done with 1.00mm solid core wire and M21 gas . Only Standard MAG is used to make the Root . We also use a Special Variation of the 6013 Elektrode with a mix of Basic and Rutil coating ti make Hot Fill and Cover Passes . Works Great an x Ray . The strength is absoluty Great and over that what the Brand tells on the Box . I am Personal a Big Fan if the amerikan way of Welding. Im praktacing every Minute i have with 6010 . the Problem Here Are our welding machines…. The normal Stick Setting has only a Voltage Range of 40v . For 6010 you Need a Machine with Special Settings or a Machine Before 1970 ….

The navy made us use pulse mig on certain steel instead of flux core because of heat input. We were doing 0.45 100s solid wire with 95/5 gas vertical up. I’d absolutely love to see a video of you running that process with that size wire and that gas vertical up. It’s fun. lol. It was mostly class 1 UT butts. I miss the ole shipyard. We built the three new zumwalt destroyers. Pretty wild looking ships!!!

A note on Pulsed Spray. Bought a Millermatic 255 specifically for Pulsed Spray and doing Structural Steel welding with .035 wire and 90/10 gas. The "autoset" pulsed mig was not working consistently and I was getting short circuit/bb's/porosity sometimes (up to 50% of the weld). Thought the machine or gas was bad. Went to the LWS and they had same machine/gas/wire. The guy was all confident about welder until their equipment did the same thing! I was happy, he was upset. He fooled with the machine on 1/4" coupons for a half hour until he abandoned Autoset went to the manual pulsed MIG - then nice hiss & clean welds. So for the Millermatic 255 if you have grief with Pulsed Autoset, go with Manual there are only a few settings to mess with. Also, for me (intermediate level welder), the above machine/settings likes downhill on a vertical tee joint alot better than uphill. I do love the cleanness/penetration/speed of pulsed spray.

Nice one Jody! What do you think of preheating the thicker joints to help the root wash in better when using short circuit mode...? The back side weldmetal to basemetal interface looked a bit sharp, and the weld seemed cold-ish.

Maybe I can help you. I passed my 1st 6”xhy 6G short circuit in 1971 and weaving 6G’s was my trademark. You’re running a 2-bead cap but that still requires a degree of weave. Always, always keep your puddle horizontal and not square to the joint. On the bottom and top, with your 2-bead cap, I suggest using a small/tight oscillation instead of the inverted weave you’ed use making a 5G all while remembering to keep the puddle/oscillation horizontal.

For the majority of things I believe pulse on steel is a solution to a problem that was already solved by flux core or metal core wire. FYI, I’ve been using pulse for a decade now.
