You should do these demos with a POS 30 year old off brand welder. That is what I always find at the test facility.

Just took my 3g test last week according to d1.1,1 inch thick plate using 1/8th 7018. passed it without power tools. It was one of the best plates ive ever done

​@@downhilldaddy5282my union welding school doesnt allow grinders. We have to use a chipping hammer, picks and wire brushes. But if you are going for light gage certs. You can use a grinder. Its very stupid.

Side bends are usually for the 1”’test Face and root on the 3/8” plate

Today was my first day for intermediate stick and my teacher said to put it on 100 amps I thought it was too hot when welding and my welds were shit no matter what I did I’m gonna try this thank you sir!

Amperage depends on the size of the electrode your using. 7018-1/8 electrodes are run at about 100 amps. In this video he’s using 3/32 rods at about 85 amps. But always play around with the settings up/down because if other people are welding around you and drawing on the same power source, it might be what’s causing problems also. Hope this helps.

you can also google the specific electrode you’re using. the manufacturer will often have suggested setting provided on their website, in my experience they’re usually pretty accurate

For shipyard test, they want you to run stringer beads the whole test. Which makes since for the amount of heat in a weave bead,that heat changes widens grain structure.

yea most structural welding jobs only allows stringers or has a set bead width you need to match.

Something to consider, if you can use power tools, on the fill passes don’t strike ahead. Light up behind where you stopped and grind off that high start. You don’t have to worry about burning out your start when you do that. It doesn’t work on the cap passes because you’ll have a grind mark on the cap then.

@@xaserizm some places require you start at the back of your crater and grind it afterword that’s how trane technologies in la crosse worked for all their weld tests whether it being ASME or PED

@@xaserizm The way trane engineers want it done is the same throughout they dont care about a little grind mark. How its actually done on the floor is the proper way through out. Mind you this weld engineer thought that the green gas hoses were for flammable gas and red hoses were for shielding gases. So hes an idiot.

In canada we have the cwb test. There 2 place where you need to do a stop start. They actually test these stop starts

I appreciate the video. It's really hard to find one as detailed as this one. I've been practicing for my test coming up. The only thing that was different is the guys hasn't told me anything about a backing bar. Maybe we don't do that here in Indiana. I wish we did though because how you put your first pass in is way different than the way I've been told to do it...? Hmm

Hi, I have a question, if I have half rod that I have used before the mechanical strength of the joint will be the same or lower than the previous weld done with a new stick? I know that in some factories half used rod are thrown away for this reason

D1.1 is mandatory in Los Angeles California if you don't have a license to weld thru the los Angeles department of building and safety than your worthless. And our test are on 1 inch plate. Good video bro

In LA and this is what I’m currently practicing for. We’re all led to take the path of this test. Any serious welder you see in my school is either working towards this test or has already done it and moving to overhead or flux.

I have a Lincoln that sounds like that from time to time. Usually when it does it, it seems like the arc is hotter. Whenever it happens, I just turn the machine off and back on.

Keep the puddle in that seam of the valley so that the puddle sides are centered along the last pass. It will be nice and tight!

Dont get to hot, keep a tight arc, and get that work clamp as close to the piece as possible.

Gouge it off with cutting torch. Grind mill scale off, inspect root, then cut for bend

The inspector will look for the heat zone reflected on the plate.

Why don you use a copper backing plate instead of a steel one? Doesnt that steel one need to be ground off?

You weld steel to steel. Your root is burned into that backing strap to make one solid part. If you out a copper backing you'd encounter all sorts of problems. Sometimes that plate is ground off, machined off, or sawed off

You gouge the backing bar off with cutting torch. Then you grind off all mill scale then cut to bend.

Every d11 test I've ever taken was done semi out doors with a generator welder and there were no power tools allowed. Simulating field welding were most d11 will take place. Good stuff but I do wish a field type machine was used. If your a welder you know they burn different

No power tools is a d1.5 bridge code test. As far as welder goes, there isn’t any designation stating what kind of power source is acceptable for testing.

I’m running a 3/32 electrode though so remember that, if you’re running a 1/8” I’d run around 115-120 amps. Best of luck!

@@mattarnold4071 we run 3/32 in class and I had been running it between 115-125amps. I kept getting massive amounts of arc blow at the top of the weld right before the upper runoff tab. Last night I went in and cooled it down to 85amps and it ran perfect. Thank you.

For me, 3/32 between 85-90 1/8 between 110-120. Every machine is different.
