These days there are many polyurethanes and MF adhesive sealants on the market that perform just as well and at a fraction of the cost!

On top of my RV I used Gaco Roof coating. It is made of silicone. I have installed two Flex Solar panels and used eternal bond tape to hold the panels in place. Needless to say it sticks to the silicone fairly well but I have to change it out yearly. I am looking for a more permanent solution. If I applied 4200 between the tape and the Gaco coating do you think it will hold?

Use 3M 4200, also available in standard or fast cure, for those applications where you might want to remove it someday. The 5200 should only be used for permanent applications.

I am wanting to make an underwater electric light. Will 5200 form a water proof seal around the wire and socket inside of a pvc pipe such that it can be completely submerged for up to 2 years?

5200 is a great underwater sealant and one of your best options for this application. However, we are not qualified to advise on this use. There are too many variables and unknowns. In addition, the leakage of an electric current into the water can be hazardous. We recommend consulting a licensed electrician.

Will 5200 Fast Cure work on a polypropylene rigid dinghy? I want to cut a 10ft dinghy, into two sections (not necessarily equal), to create a 'nesting' dinghy that I can store on the deck of a 30ft sailboat...

Polypropylene is hard to bond because of its low surface energy. You have to apply adhesion promoter (for example 3M Adhesion Promoter AP596) before applying the sealant.

Thanks for the tip...I also searched 3M's 5200FC 'pdf' and they suggested 180-220 grit sandpaper and their 'all-purpose' cleaner prior to any application...

One of my support railings broke lose from the fiberglass. Basically the screw came out and the railing is completely detached. Of course, people put a lot of weight on these railings. Would the 5200 hold it?

3M 5200 need at least 48 hours to set up before it is submerged in water otherwise the bond will fail.

that's the property of all moisture cure sealant. curing rate will be faster in high humidity and high temperature

Hi njoeandjen! We would not recommend any of these 3M sealants for that job. It sounds like the thread may be aged and would need to be resewn. Anything we could suggest that will work on the plastic window may not do good with the canvas & anything for the canvas most likely would not be good for the plastic. We suggest visiting a professional canvas or automotive shop for the best solution.

I’m a carpenter not a marine dude but I would say if you use this for chimney flashing you damn well better get it right, cause if it doesn’t fix the problem now you’re screwed. It’s so permanent that to get it off will ruin the usually lead counter flashings. Once those are ruined repairing your roof becomes much more involved. So probably choose something silicone based so that future work is possible, or in case what you did doesn’t stop the leak, you can have another chance.

What would you recommend, 4200 Fast Cure or 5200 Fast Cure for insulation hangers for the underside of a Fiferglass/gelcoat engine hatch 3' x 6' x 2 1/2" egg crate foam? I'm replacing the OEM egg crate foam. Thanks

Yes, 5200 Fast Cure along with fasteners can be used. It should be noted that 5200 it fairly permanent as an adhesive sealant and so if you wish to permanently install, this would fit that function. If you would like less permanent 3M 4200 or 4000UV are less permanent.

Can somebody help me? I have a hatch on my boat which is in the cuddy cabin and the handles to secure it came, Both surfaces are plastic and I don’t know what to use to secure them

It might be easier if we knew what handles you have as typically handles are screwed in and waterproofed with 5200 or in this case 4200 as it is compatible with some plastics. There are some brands that will specify they work atop other sealants.. my advice go to a good hardware and sit and read all the product information then go home and do some research especially on the experiences of others who have used it. Then, finally, you can go ahead and buy it.

Will it work if the surfaces are wet or damp from rain? Can it be used in the rain on a deck for instance?
