I have a 2005 whitewater boat .. but this boat is a 17ft V cc bay boat .. it was made by a small company in Louisiana that is nolonger in businesses (not to be confused with the bigger white water boats made out in florida where you are) ..its (really cool boat tho aside from the title steal) kinda looks like a cape horn. Lot of glass on this boat. And i really want to restore the gelcoat on the this boat badly and do a non skid surface for the decks .. i will be doing it in white tho .. and was gonna do the outside of the hull in a light grey and maybe do the outside in paint ? I(idk have not decided on paint or gelcoat coat yet for the outside hull) ... all i know is, is that your channel is very valuable to guys like myself, guys that are gonna be rolling our material on. You are so thourough in your directions. Really gives me a lot of confidence to try and take on a project like this..... maybe you could do a video on the process youys use to roll on the gel on the bottom of your boats ? Like how you lift them off the trailer and position your stands and move them while applying your material ? .. or maybe you already have a vid like that and i just havnt come across it ?

Glad you are enjoying the videos! It has been a multi year build, and I just bought materials along the way as needed. Over the last couple years material prices and interest rates on outboards nearly doubled, so that really put a crunch on us! I can tell you that it cost more, and took quite a bit longer to build than I originally thought. But it is performing every bit as well as I had hoped, and she should last a lifetime. Glad you are enjoying the content! We usually do at least 2 coats usually 3 of gelcoat on most projects. the last coat always gets wax added, if not the gel will remain very tacky. There is a company called hawkeye industries that makes a clear additive for gelcoat that makes the gelcoat lay out very nice. hope to make a video using that product in the future. You might want to check it out. even using that you still have to add wax on the last coat. hope this helps, thanks again for watching!

Thanks! There is no specific amount of glass for every application, but I used 1 layer of 1708 and 1 layer of 1 oz mat to give the 1708 a nicer cosmetic finish. We also doubled up the corners with a 6 inch wide strip of 1708. That seems to be plenty for our boat, but you might want to experiment with some test panels for your project. Nice! Really nice. I have been looking into what to use for nonskid in the cockpit of my 17' center console -- walnut shells, Soft Sand, polymer bead aggregate like Griptex, sandblasting sand, beach sand -- and I can't tell if it really makes a difference or not. Can you tell me how you decided to use a polymer bead, and would sifted clean sand work as well? I have been thinking of sprinkling a thick layer of fine sand onto the first gelcoat, sweeping and vacuuming off the excess after the gelcoat hardens, then adding one or two more layers of gelcoat. I'm aiming for an even, fine texture that is still comfortable for bare feet. What do you think of that plan? Thank you.
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 9 ай бұрын
Glad you are enjoying the videos! I have always had good success with the griptex, it is specifically made for this kind of application. The other materials can work, but I like using marine-grade materials with a proven track record. Also, I find it easier to mix the non-skid into the paint or gel coat rather than trying to apply it to the uncured material and then having to come back and vacuum up the excess. Just my opinion, hope this helps. Good luck with Your project, and thanks for watching!

@FishBumpTV

Gelcoat is basically a high quality pigmented polyester resin. It is the colored exterior surface that you see on most fiberglass boats. It can be brushed, rolled or sprayed on to a surface. It can have a smooth, textured or course surface finish, depending on the application method. It is not the same thing as common marine or automotive paint. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 8 ай бұрын
Glad you are enjoying the videos. The gelcoat without wax is going to be cured, but still very tacky. I would not recommend walking on it if you can avoid it. We try to gelcoat in phases so that we can work off areas that are cured with wax in it. You can also try using extension handles on your rollers, that will allow you to reach some of the more difficult areas. It can take some planning to make it work out, but it is doable. As a side note, the roller method with wax added on the last coat is more of a work boat or commercial kind of finish. It is not going to be a glossy surface when done. If you want that, you would have to wet sand, and polish the cured gelcoat, which would be a lot more work. Or go with a paint system like Awlgrip. Hope this helps, and good luck with your project!
@geoffstein3896
@geoffstein3896 Жыл бұрын
That finish is looking awesome! Can I please ask why you are rolling the gelcoat and not spraying it, and also why do you only want to wax the last coat I thought you'd wet sand between coats? Asking for advice as I am hopefully soon taking on the same task with my boat. Thanks
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Gel coat certainly can be sprayed, but there can be a few drawbacks. Gel coat is thicker than most paints, therefore it requires a gun with a larger-than-normal tip or orifice. It also has a VERY short pot life when properly catalyzed, usually 10 to 15 min at most. They do make external mix gel guns, which I do have, but they are expensive. Spraying also creates a lot of overspray, which requires you to mask everything anywhere near the area you are spraying. Rolling also helps fill in small pinholes that may be harder to fill when spraying vs rolling. Rolling does create more of a textured surface than spraying does, but I wanted a slightly textured surface on this boat since it is a charter boat. As far as the wax additive, gel coat requires some kind of air inhibiter such as wax or the gel coat will remain very tacky. Making it very hard to sand. Even though most boats are built using gel coat, it is usually sprayed into a mold which gives it a very slick surface. It can be very hard to get that kind of surface if the gel isn't molded. There are some very good marine paint systems such as US paints awlcraft 2000 that you might want to consider instead of Gel coat for your refinishing project. Hope this answers your question. Appreciate you watching!

I’m restoring a 1979 Checkmate Enchanter that the top cap gel coat is in bad shape. I started wet sanding with 800 grit but that didn’t phase it. Worked my way down Fromm 800,400,320,even down to 80 grit. The gel coat was still discolored so I would like to re gel coat. This looks like what I need to do. What finish did you end up with your fairing? 80,120,320?? I really enjoy your videos
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV Жыл бұрын
With gelcoat, you do not need to fair with very fine paper like you would with paint. We used 80 grit for the fairing. With paint systems like awl grip or interlux, I usually go to 220 or 320. Rolled gel works great for our application because this is a charter boat. I don't want any gloss or shine, and it needs to be very durable. You may not be happy with the cosmetics of gel for an application like yours. The gel does NOT roll out smooth or glossy like most paints. If that sounds ok with you, then the rolled gel might be a good choice.If you want better cosmetics than gel, you might check out US Paints, awlcraft 2000 line of paints. Thanks for watching, and good luck with your project

@@FishBumpTV hey Capt and thanks for your response. Since I sent the previous post I’ve been researching and found out that since I used Total Boat Total Fair to fill various dings,dents and screw holes that I need to use something like Total Boat Total Protect or some other 2 part primer since Total Fair is not compatible with gel coat. This boat is 44 years old and was actually dug out of a salvage yard here in North Ga. I have no idea how long it has been neglected. The current condition of the gel is real gritty. I don’t know if all that grittiness needs to be sanded smooth before the Total Protect is applied. I like the tip of the acetone in the bottle. Thanks

I have tried foam rollers in the past. They can work. They will still leave a textured surface, they didn't seem to hold a lot of material, and some of them would just fall apart due to the solvents in the gel. Maybe there are some new and better ones on the market. You could always buy a few, and see how they do on a test panel. I would be curious to see what you find out. If you find ones that work good, please let me know. Thanks for watching!

Need some advice please. I need to correct some of my gelcoat work I did today where I went too long and got clumpy GC boogers in the late rolled floor areas. I want to lightly sand out the boogers and re-roll and re-texture roll but since my finish was in waxed GC I'm not sure what I can do over waxed finish. Can the wax be washed off? Do I have to do a deep sanding and start over? Can a light sanding work? What happens when you go over waxed GC with more waxed GC? Didn't you have some of that when doing your floors as you met the sides which were already waxed. I attempted way too much today. The floors, the liner, the gunnel deck all in one run. I had a guy mixing as I and we were rolling like crazy but it got way out of hand. Was trying to continue with the wet edge but for the whole 27' boat inside. I made several batches that were way too big and the thermals got hot in the pan and killed it. I used you as the inspiration, guide and appreciate ya. Thanks.

80 or 120 grit sandpaper can be used to thoroughly sand the surface of of the area you want to regelcoat. Then a wipedown with acetone. The new gelcoat needs a wax free surface to bond properly. On a boat that big you would usually gelcoat in phases, Gunnel,sides, floor, etc. We have a video of when we gelcoated the interior of our 29, and it was broken down into sections. Important to remember that the warmer the Temps, the faster the gelcoat will cure, so getting a early start before air temps rise can help.You can also reduce catalyst percent down to 1 percent, and mix in one qt batches, which should help. I have a 1995 j14 in redoing now. How would I replicate the spatter effect of drizzled multi colors. Deck gets dirty and I like the look
@FishBumpTV

We add a product called webbing solution to the gelcoat to make it web or splatter like that. I use a gravity feed gun with a very narrow fan and low are pressure. It does take some practice to get this to look right. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

I am restoring a 198 Carolina Skiff. What would you recommend for refinishing the outside/bottom of the boat? Gelcoat or paint? I’m in Panama City Fl. Where can I order the material in the color I want?
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 4 ай бұрын
Gelcoat is thicker and tougher, but can be a lot of work if you want it to be a glossy finish. Paint will look nice right away, but you have to be careful with it. One isn't really better than the other, you just have to decide what is more important to you. We have links to many of the products we use below the description in our videos. Hope this helps and thanks for watching

So on this job are you going to use a buffer and cut or sand to make it look wet or shiny ?
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 10 ай бұрын
You could do that, but it is a lot more work. Since this will be a charter boat we will be leaving it with the flat, roller finish. I might show how to cut and sand in a later video. Thanks for watching!

doing non skid on a yacht, but have a sticky surface about a month later, presuming this is the wax. What is the best way to get rid of the sticky wax on the surface? White gelcoat looks pretty bad as its catching dirt and dust, and dosnt really scrub off with detergents.
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 2 ай бұрын
The wax solution that is added to the gelcoat on the last coat is what should make the gelcoat cure and be tack free. Is it possible that the last coat did not have enough wax added, or that it was not mixed in thoroughly? That would explain the surface remaining tacky. If you have some of the gelcoat and wax solution left over from your project I would suggest doing a test panel in a controlled space and be sure that the gelcoat cures properly with the wax added. If it does then you would reapply gelcoat with the wax added over the tacky areas after thoroughly prepping the surface. This is just my opinion based on what you are describing, but if you need more consulting I can be reached through our patreon account. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

I gelcoated my deck and did pumice for my nonskid, used wax on my final coat. came out great, however after a few months my deck looks really dirty and doesn’t seem to get clean. I pressure washed it and still looks super dirty. Should I redo it or did I do something wrong having it cure improperly ? Shoukd I reapply a new layer with a ton more wax and a little less mekp to let it come to the surface a cure fully? I was thinking of going with a different color to hide the dirt better if not
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 3 күн бұрын
I have never used pumice as a non skid additive. I wonder if that could be part of the issue. Awlgrip griptex is my preferred nonskid. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

You can wet sand and polish, but it is a lot of work. We just left a flat roller finish on our boat. It is fine for our application, and pretty common on charter boats. thanks for watching!

When you put down your base and the non skid coats how do you put the tape on and not get it the base layer dirty when it’s tacky?
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 6 ай бұрын
You can tape over gelcoat that doesn't have wax in it as long as it has cured. Just use a high quality tape like 3m blue, and don't stick the tape down real hard. On a big job like this one you have to plan the sequence that you work in. It can be a little tricky, but totally doable. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

What prevents gel coat cracking?
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 11 ай бұрын
Gelcoat cracks for a number of reasons. If the material under the gel is flexing or moving it will crack. If the gel is applied to thick, or has to much solvent added to it will cause cracking, and being left out in the sun or high heat for long periods will cause cracking.

It is hard to say. The plug and mold took more time to build than the boat itself. You guys that have been following the build know that I didn't even document that part. I can tell you that it would be very expensive to replace this boat, that is for sure! The main reason I designed and built this boat was for my charter business. I wasn't really looking at the way we built this boat from a money making viewpoint. I am sure there are guys out there that could take the molds, and go into serious production. If anyone wants to talk about that ,I would be happy to discuss. Appreciate You Guys watching!

You put masking tape on non wax gelcoat. This layer of gelcoat is not cured. When you pull the masking tape for the final coat with the wax. Did you have the surprise to peel the gelcoat under ?
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 10 ай бұрын
It is ok to put the masking tape on non-waxed gel coat that has been properly catalyzed and allowed to cure. I like to use the blue 3M easy release tape, but other brands can be used. Just be sure not to press it into the fresh gel coat too aggressively and do not leave it on for more than 12 hours. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
