Came across this video just in time before I applied the wrong silicone/sealant to re-caulk a recessed rod rack to the fiberglass inwale. Nice pace to the video, and was very informative with easy to understand basic chemistry info in order for me to choose the correct sealant. I will be seeking out more Captain Wayne Canning videos in the future. Thank you for saving me time making sense of the silicone & sealant debate.

Sika recommend Aktivator 205 as the solvent pretreatment prior to using 291 - but no one in my neck of the woods uses it nor does any local store stock it. The 205 is not cheap & I am reluctant to buy it because I will not use much & the rest will go off before I next need it. Just wondering what you use to prep fibreglass transom?? Acetone/Thinners/Isopropryl??

Great video! Really thorough talk, you taught me a lot I ought to know on a subject I was always too afraid to ask. :D I need to fix a leaking forward deck hatch on my boat that was patched by a previous owner. Watching your video made me realized they'd done a bad fix with butyl. Totally makes sense that it's failed over the years due to sun/chemical cleaners, and now I know why to fix it with silicone instead. Thanks very much!

Would you think the 5200 would be good to use to glue the top half of a fiberglass boat back to the bottom half? The top fits down into a 3/4” lip on the bottom and gets riveted or screwed with an aluminum/rubber strip around the seam. You sit, steer and hold on to the top of the boat like a motorcycle...The boat in question is a 1969 Barracuda hydrocycle, a predecessor to seadoo that takes an outboard motor, there is a short video of it on my channel.

So, what do I need to glue PVC board or composite decking board to my fiberglass bass boat? Without being long winded, I am replacing the old seats with new ones and there is nothing behind the thin fiberglass to attach the backs too and the backs need to be offset so the live well lids can open without hitting them. I want to glue some type of composite material to the fiberglass and then through bolt the seat backs to it. This should take care of both the issue of having something to screw to and creating an offset. Otherwise I would remove the foam inside and install a backer board, but I would still need to offset the seats and the screws would need to be much longer, causing other issues. So, what adhesive? It will still be in sunlight even though it’s behind the seat and I may paint the topside and inside this winter, so preferably paintable. It’s a great functioning 1994 ProCraft 200 Super Pro, in case you’re wondering what I am destroying 🥸

Hello Captain Wayne! What a great presentation! Your information will really be useful in the future. I have a specific questions regarding the use of adhesives, I will be installing strip lighting with a 3M tape on the back side. These strips will be 12” long. Anybody know the best sealant to apply underwater in the ocean on a boat hull??? I'm currently in Jupiter Florida and got a free 35 ft sailboat I'm just trying to temporarily stop the leak. It's in the hull and I'm looking for a product that maybe someone's use and had success with to dive down and apply under the salt water just to stop the leak temporarily at least or longer term. What would adhere best? The water is dirty as it's in the intercoastal in Jupiter Florida so it's a lot of river water that is about to meet the ocean

@Boatingzen
@Boatingzen 8 жыл бұрын
I would use the 4000 or a polysulfide like Lifecaulk. The problem with butyl is that because it does not harden the movement of the stanchions will work it out over a period of time. What ever you use counter sink the holes to form a trough for the sealant. I also like to use Orings around the bolts as an additional seal. Good luck with it and thanks for asking.

I would think you need to drop the keel, ask a boatbuilder but the problem needs to be addressed some time. 3m 5200 is indicated. IT IS PERMANENT you never ever want to use it if you think you might have to drop the keel again. I cant see how puting anything on top of the keelbolt nuts is going to do any good, you do not want any moisture getting in to the lamination/gelcoat. Not sure about a poly boat but I would use silicone as a sealant and back up any fasteners. I would redrill any holes as well. Hope that helps

Danny, are you expecting the anchor line holder to bear the weight of the anchor? It's tough to understand your exact need without pictures but I would definitely suggest that you use a piece of wood to "back" up to the screw mounting areas if possible to help spread out the force. Through bolting your mounting screws to a backing plate of plywood or hardwood will spread out the load and help keep the screws from stripping out under load.

Not sure right off but I would guess the only real way to repair that is to remove and re-seal. I know neer an easy way sorry to say

Thank you for making this video! I really learned alot. I have a question though, If you had to use a sealant to repair a small crack on a pool sand filter, what would you use to try to repair the small crack? The pressure of this filter is around 25psi. Thank you!
@Boatingzen
@Boatingzen 8 жыл бұрын
I am guessing the filter housing is a type of plastic. I think many of these are a fiber reinforce plastic but I am an expert on those. I would think for a crack you are going to want an adhesive more than a sealant. I think you can get a 2 part epoxy for plastics that would work. I would ask at a pool store what they suggest. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.

Ok I just bought the 4200 and 5200. My plan was to use 5200 on new deck cleats screws/ backing plate and 4200 on a plastic thru hull pass through clam shell that may need to be changed our for a new one at some point as well as heavy duty Metal folding Antenna mounts. Do I need silicone for the screws to mount a plastic chart plotter and clamb shell for coax? Please advise I'm getting reading to the this boat in to a surface facility for the Auxiliary and I'm starting to panic as I never worked with fiberglass and plastic
@Boatingzen
@Boatingzen 6 жыл бұрын
I would suggest polysulfied for bedding the cleats Silicone for plastic fittings. Do not use 5200 at all. Good luck.

How about the marine sealant Terason 9160? It has the vinegar smell you refer to, but I was told that it's one of the best to use to keep water out on an above-water surface. Is it ok only for an indoor use? Should I be worried that it was used as a seal between fiberglass and metal? Great info in your video, thank you! I will share it with my uncle who thinks 5200 is for everything. 😬
@Boatingzen
@Boatingzen 7 жыл бұрын
I have not used it so cannot really say. I would say it would be best to stick with a tried and true marine sealant after all the sealant is a small cost of any repair. Thanks for the comment

@Boatingzen

Replace the tank. Gasoline is not something to have leaking on a boat. For a car or other application where fumes are not an issue there are some good epoxies that might work

Hi Wayne, Thanks for your kind reply. The hairline crack I have is on a car's gas tank and it is so small you can barely get your finger nail in it so thought you might know of a brand and type and where I can get it. I had someone unconfirmed tell me that Marine tex grey would work but don't know for sure. Please help

I tried something I seen on a video and it works . You can add cornstarch to 100% clear silicone and what ever color you want add food coloring and the cornstarch sets the silicone up quicker ands evenly
@Boatingzen
@Boatingzen 8 жыл бұрын
I can think of a few reasons not to do this for boat silicone. The biggest being that it would likely add to mold and mildew problems with the sealant. Interesting thought though. Thanks for watching and the comments.
