Nice pace to the video, and was very informative with easy to understand basic chemistry info in order for me to choose the correct sealant. @TheFrogfeeder4 жыл бұрын
Would you think the 5200 would be good to use to glue the top half of a fiberglass boat back to the bottom half? The top fits down into a 3/4” lip on the bottom and gets riveted or screwed with an aluminum/rubber strip around the seam. You sit, steer and hold on to the top of the boat like a motorcycle...The boat in question is a 1969 Barracuda hydrocycle, a predecessor to seadoo that takes an outboard motor, there is a short video of it on my channel.

So, what do I need to glue PVC board or composite decking board to my fiberglass bass boat? Without being long winded, I am replacing the old seats with new ones and there is nothing behind the thin fiberglass to attach the backs too and the backs need to be offset so the live well lids can open without hitting them. I want to glue some type of composite material to the fiberglass and then through bolt the seat backs to it. This should take care of both the issue of having something to screw to and creating an offset. Otherwise I would remove the foam inside and install a backer board, but I would still need to offset the seats and the screws would need to be much longer, causing other issues. So, what adhesive? It will still be in sunlight even though it’s behind the seat and I may paint the topside and inside this winter, so preferably paintable. It’s a great functioning 1994 ProCraft 200 Super Pro, in case you’re wondering what I am destroying 🥸

I would use the 4000 or a polysulfide like Lifecaulk. The problem with butyl is that because it does not harden the movement of the stanchions will work it out over a period of time. What ever you use counter sink the holes to form a trough for the sealant. I also like to use Orings around the bolts as an additional seal. Good luck with it and thanks for asking.

I'm wanting to screw in some anchor line holders into my polyethylene plastic 10 ft bass buggy boat. Is it safe for me to just screw them onto the plastic without the plastic cracking or should I use a type of silicone? I'm also making some rod holders and I'm using flanges on the base and was just wondering if it is safe to drill those directly into the boat also or if I should maybe put a piece of wood so the screw would have to go through the flange and then the wood and then the boat? Thanks for your help!

Not sure about a poly boat but I would use silicone as a sealant and back up any fasteners. I would redrill any holes as well. Hope that helps
@jerrydoolittle97477 жыл бұрын
Danny, are you expecting the anchor line holder to bear the weight of the anchor? It's tough to understand your exact need without pictures but I would definitely suggest that you use a piece of wood to "back" up to the screw mounting areas if possible to help spread out the force. Through bolting your mounting screws to a backing plate of plywood or hardwood will spread out the load and help keep the screws from stripping out under load.

I am guessing the filter housing is a type of plastic. I think many of these are a fiber reinforce plastic but I am an expert on those. I have not used it so cannot really say. I would say it would be best to stick with a tried and true marine sealant after all the sealant is a small cost of any repair. Thanks for the comment

A goos quality silicone is usually best for this. Do not skip buy the good stuff, Boat life or Dow 795 are best. Good luck and thanks for the comments

One thought comes to mind regarding "misinformation" it works both ways.Sometimes a product is not used properly (not cleaning the surfaces) then the user blames that product.

Yes you are correct and I plan a follow up to this one on how to use sealants so keep an eye out for that one soon. Thanks again for the feedback

What is the best product for fixing a metal gas tank with very small crack in tank.
@Boatingzen6 жыл бұрын
Replace the tank. Gasoline is not something to have leaking on a boat. For a car or other application where fumes are not an issue there are some good epoxies that might work

Hi Wayne, Thanks for your kind reply. The hairline crack I have is on a car's gas tank and it is so small you can barely get your finger nail in it so thought you might know of a brand and type and where I can get it. I had someone unconfirmed tell me that Marine tex grey would work but don't know for sure. Please help
@Boatingzen6 жыл бұрын
Marine tex is good and you could give it a try.

Generally I get as much as possible with a sharp chisel, then a scotch pad and finally clean with lacquer thinner.

This is a tough one I would check with the manufacture or a place that specializes in RIB repair. I really need to do a video on adhesives when I get time. Thanks

I tried something I seen on a video and it works . You can add cornstarch to 100% clear silicone and what ever color you want add food coloring and the cornstarch sets the silicone up quicker ands evenly
@Boatingzen8 жыл бұрын
I can think of a few reasons not to do this for boat silicone. The biggest being that it would likely add to mold and mildew problems with the sealant. Interesting thought though. Thanks for watching and the comments.

can you paint the 4000 uv
@Boatingzen7 жыл бұрын
Yes but in general it is not good to paint over any sealant as the sealant is more flexible than the paint and will cause the paint to crack. Hope that helps
