It's very common to need to park an aircraft in the fog. Sometimes, the stand guidance doesn't pick up the aircraft correctly, so it must stop for safety. On occasion, I have to walk out onto the taxiway to marshal aircraft in cases when the pilots cannot see the guidance or it stops working. It's Great fun.

How does that A380 not stall on such a steep take off or is it basically acting like a rocket?
@StephenKarl_Integral
@StephenKarl_Integral 11 сағат бұрын
Le Bourget Airshow. Basically, that A380 is *empty.* I've watched the demo routine live, twice. At the time, there wasn't even any seat in the cabin, just empty water tanks for weight testing runs. Just like any airshow demonstration flight, the point is to impress the potential buyers, with an aircraft that does incredible things. If you observe the rotation, it only takes a slight pitch up for the aircraft to get airborne. That means the rotation speed is waaaaaaayyyy above the normal value *at that weight.* Basically, demonstration pilots are keeping the aircraft on the ground to accumulate excess energy (kinetic), to be able to perform that steep high attitude climb, and somewhat conserve some to continue climb in a turn. Very impressive, it's the whole point of an airshow. And don't forget: those 4 engines are meant to make that aircraft fly and climb normally at *maximum take off weight.* Not to say the A380 could climb like a rocket, but it only takes a few seconds to accelerate significantly. "Stall is almost out of reach." (and those pilots are very experienced)
@yellads
@yellads 11 сағат бұрын
@@StephenKarl_Integral Thanks, seems like a very short run before rotation? But I guess its weight is about 25% of normal? So like driving a truck without its trailer lol
@StephenKarl_Integral
@StephenKarl_Integral 10 сағат бұрын
@ I don't have the exact numbers, from what I remember talking with Airbus, diversion airports were Chateauroux, Toulouse and Hamburg (just enough fuel to get there, after the show if something goes wrong). No passenger, no cargo, cabin equipment roughtly the same weight of equipped cabin without galeys. No lavatory dumps either (saves some tons). When pushed to the limits (brake on TOGA), the A380 could takeoff in about 600m run (2000ft). That runway is about 9800ft (we can tell they didn't pushed it that far). So yeah, a driving truck without trailer, but rather the truck with engine(s) tailored to pull 90 tons, not just 30 tons... The amazing thing is, they reported the slow pass was at a speed of 108kts... much lower than the average landing speed of usual airliners. Those wings, they have incredible lift ratio.
@rtbrtb_dutchy4183
@rtbrtb_dutchy4183 7 сағат бұрын
@@StephenKarl_Integralit’s not to impress potential buyers. 😂 the buyers don’t care about that part and are not impressed by it. It’s done to entertain the crowd. They won’t keep it on the ground beyond rotation speed. Just that it’s so light, it almost jumps off the runway.

The click bait for the self park of the SQ A380 was most likely caused by some issue with the Visual Docking Guidance System (VDGS). If the VDGS can’t pass many of its self checks and it decides it can’t safely park the jet then as we just saw a marshaller is standing by ready to takeover. Most likely the fog impeded the VDGS from properly identifying the A380 it was supposed to park.

Maybe a little misunderstanding: Some gates at some major airport has a docking system, an "automated mashaller". It's a device, sort of screen at aircraft cockpit level providing distance and alignment for an incoming aircraft to park at that gate. It appears 3minOfAv believes those devices are everywhere, that marshallers are something of the past. Reality is, (human) marshallers takes precedence over such devices, the later more often than believed *unreliable,* they are useless in fog or pourring rain, blizzard, they don't exist at taxiways (where follow me cars with marshaller are very common). Also appears 3minOfAv doesn't know pilots can (and will) stop halfway upon entering a parking spot, to ask for a marshaller; it's not a problem, at all, other aircraft won't have clearance to cross until aircraft is properly parked. A marshaller is always there even if there is a (seemingly working) docking system: A slight glitch, and better not rely on that machine, marshaller always take precedence. This do happen, relatively often. Though, I don't think 3minOfAv thought aircraft could park themselves (other comments on the matter), but I get the sarcasm :)

@EdOeuna I worked at IAD for 20 years and was a USAF air traffic controller for 8 years - there was always someone directing the pilot when to stop . In the case of heavy jets sometimes the marshal was on a rolling stairs or other elevated location where he could see pilot AND stop Mark at the same time and pilot could see his crossed batons to stop . Many times I saw a parking operation STOP SHORT because a marshaller had not arrived yet OR didn't have a pair of batons . This goes for "RJs" to 747s , 777s and 380s and everything in between .
