That A380 landing reminded me of what happened when a couple of Irish pilots were coming in to Prestwick Airport in Scotland. One said to the other "They haven't left us much distance to land on", and the other replied, "yes, but look at the width of the runway!". I guess having an aircraft the size of the A380 is a big advantage in those conditions.

Incredibly bad? The idea is to minimize the side loading on the gear when touching down. Makes the rest of the landing rollout MUCH less frenetic and best of all, controlled. The engineers fitted the airplane with a huge powerful rudder and ailerons to help in the process. I guess it's just easier for some guys to perform a sideways-crabbing smackdown landing. My point is that it takes minimal skill to land sideways. Show me that same landing with the guy skillfully aligning the jet with the centerline as he's touching down and I'll add my accolades.

I experienced a landing like that landing in high winds in Warsaw, Poland from NYC after a 5 hour takeoff delay due to storms. I'm watching out the window and the runway getting closer and we're sideways (basically putting my window row in the "front") and thinking there's no way and what the F are they thinking?!?!? A very calm voice was saying "hold on, folks, it's going to be a bumpy landing." Then the massive jerk as the plane whipped about 35-40 degrees in an instant to straighten itself when the rear wheels touched down and it was over in about 30 seconds. By far the scariest flight I've ever been on but very thankful to the skilled pilots. We had pretty bad turbulence before that as well.

The Captain of the A-380 should have gone around for another try. Touching down before lining up the nose gear with the centerline of the runway is extremely hard on the main landing gear. This is especially true with an aircraft as big and heavy as an A-380. That was an unsafe landing by the crew.

There's a plethora of other commenters who don't know what they are talking about and calling this a good landing (which it IS, from an impressive technical viewpoint of pilot skill and mechanical capability). A crab angle landing like this is going to wreak havoc on the landing gear. I'm not type-rated for the A380, but the aircraft I used to service and fly back in the day required an inspection of the fixed main gear after a crab landing in excess of 20 degrees before the plane would be deemed airworthy again.

A380 video You may have seen a video this week of one of our A380s landing in a strong crosswind in London. Initially the landing was seen by some as a "masterful landing". The official view from the Training Department is a simple one- THIS IS NOT WHAT WE WANT TO SEE. There is a time to give an approach away in the interest of safety. If you see such a thing in the sim that would be a grade of 1 for both pilots. And not for FPM but PSD. Please gentlemen, lets teach our pilots to operate safely even that means changing the mission. Large aeroplanes can handle the crab landing very well. It takes huge skill from the pilots, however, to execute a crab landing. In certain wind conditions it’s necessary. It looks as though the wind is blowing the aeroplane into that position but it’s actually the pilot who’s holding it there to keep the air force on top of the wings…..I think. Pretty sure lots of pilots will correct me here (it’s a long time since I was an RAF Cadet).

Sorry, Alison, but Crab landings require only minimal skill. Aligning the long axis of the airplane just before and during the landing to minimize side loading and doing a better job controlling the landing rollout is a totally different animal.
