However, after the call to perform the go around by ATC, the captain proceeded to go around, as well as retracting the flaps and landing gear. In this situation, these last two tasks should have been performed by the first officer, right? It's just a small detail, but now I'm curious...

@lbowsk9 ай бұрын
Wrong times two. 1. The little c captain was completely over the top with his "help". All of the non pilots are so jazzed about how quickly he jumped on the throttles so quickly. Yet while he was jumping the gun doing that he missed the First Officers call for Flaps 20, which is the FIRST thing he's supposed to do on a G/A. The is no rush to jam in the throttles like that, particularly if the First Officer already selected TOGA on the throttle switch. If you watch carefully, the FO is selecting TOGA as the captain is jamming in max (or nearly so) thrust. The Auto Throttles are already commanding a programmed amount of thrust for the GA. Besides, the airplane only requires a half a shove to get it flying. Adding too much thrust in a Go Around is a sure way to screw things up. Since he took so long to call positive rate, the gear speed is possibly an issue as are the Flap speeds. Plus, underslung engines produce a lot of pitch up moment and this can really get you in a tight box, particularly with a low altitude level off. He was too busy on the tower frequency. There is no rush to call the tower. The rule is Aviate, Navigate, Communicate. And there is no reason to shout like he was doing. It's distracting and raises the tension in the cockpit for absolutely no reason. And this was not a sim. I won't even address his hand being all over the yoke for all of it. @@boringpolitician

Not to be morbid but airports like JFK 1:52 make me wonder how there haven't been major non-deliberate accidents. If something malfunctions on that plane then its harder to not hit a civilian building than to avoid it. And not only landings but takeoffs as well which are even riskier. A plane with no altitude and no speed can't do anything to avoid a massive tragedy unless there's a big river nearby and you are a bit lucky like Captain Sully.
